When you mentioned what the new word for the week was Hanakotoba, I thought what a beautiful way for Margaret to use in describing flowers in her artwork.
Hanakatoba is amazing and sounds so special. Seeing as how I had blue hydrangea as a wedding flower, the flower does speak to me now! I actually completed Ajisai for my 5th wedding anniversary!

lol. You did pretty great on the pronunciation and I love that for you. I am super jealous of yours because I got the pink line edition. I love that Margaret’s art revolves around Hanakotoba and their hidden meanings.
I thought I knew a lot about flowers but I definitely learned something new about Hanakotoba and the language of flowers in Japanese. I love that the flowers have their own meaning (hydrangeas are my absolute favorite), very cool!
I find in most of Morales art, Hanakotoba is a major influence in them. From Ajisai, where the hydrangeas take up most of the piece to Hades and Persephone which is my favorite because you get to see the flower petals from Persephone lead up to the grim darker colors of Hades. In a way the wilting of her flowers brings her closer to Hades or death itself. In a way it's also symbolic of their relationship. She brings life and the Spring, and he brings the frost and Cold. Yet, they both need each other in order to balance the seasons and bring proper harvests. It's fascinating, which is why the way Morales portrays them is one of my favorites.
Hanakotoba is a fascinating topic, and while I knew a little bit about it, I didn't know that was the term used to describe it as a subject! I really enjoy learning about the artists, their methods, and facts about their pieces on this channel!
I love Margaret’s use of 花言葉. Hanakotoba is a fantastic concept and was featured in one of my wife’s and i’s favorite Japanese drama “Eye Love You”. I really hope Margaret one day does some Tagalog themed paintings. I’d really be thrilled by that. I love that I can support a fellow Filipino!
Hanakotoba reminds me of the Victorian language of flower which I actually first learned existed from a Japanese manga 😂 You see a lot of usage of hanakotoba in anime, especially the red spider lily
So it turns out that in the Hanakotoba language, a cactus 🌵 represents lust and intercourse…guess who is now no longer giving cacti 🌵 as housewarming gifts 🎁 😂
