Dunna Did It i feel you mate and i’ve been there tried many ways to get a better and easier making a hyperlapse and you can lock into a fixed subject(object tracking while on hyperlapse) now im quite satisfied using dji osmo mobile 2 and an iphone 7 above..yesss because you can shoot 4k..the dji go app generates a hyperlapse video for you..the highest is 4k so just in case if you use warp stabiliser in post and you need to crop and zoom in you are not loosing any quality if 1080p is the finish product.. but the downside is you can only shoot at auto camera settings mode on active tracking and you have to color match your hyperlapse footage from your mirrorless camera footage.. hope it helps cheers! 🍻

In my opinion the traditional way (Handheld Photos) is much better, as you already mentioned it gives you much better quality but also if you're kinda lazy and wanna save time, the things you mentioned that take more time are -
1. Warp stabilizer (You eventually ended up using the warp stabilizer)
2. The editing in a different software and then stitching it in another ( there's no stitching, you have to just import it as a normal clip and it will line up by itself and just don't use another software and colour correct it as you were to any other normal clip)
3. The time between each shot ( firstly, everyone doesn't has a gimbal and even if you have it, just to save 10 mins you have to balance your gimbal and stuff)
So it ends up complicating the hyperlapse process if you do it this way, buṭ if you do it the old school way, you just have to be smart enough when shooting the pictures! It gives you much more quality content and takes no extra time, just my opinion :D
Also about checking it on location, you can also do it with the old school way, just press and hold the Next button in your camera and you can have an idea of the final outcome!

Here are my thoughts!
1. Warp stabilizer seems to be a common thread regardless of whether you do it the way I did or shoot photos. It just helps make it smooth in the end either way.
2. Yeah, If you shoot jpeg photos you can go straight into premiere. If you shoot raw, you will have to open in Lightroom and convert(this where I would edit them to have the most editing power) or you can open as a single clip in after effects and put that over into premiere. This definitely seems like a bit more work either way than having the clip already built for you. (Unless you shoot jpegs, then it's not so bad)
3. Yeah I think if you were really good at doing the photos, handheld would probably be pretty quick too. (It takes me less than a minute to balance my gimbal. Not sure why it would take 10 minutes lol)
The other big one is that my computer can handle the video files WAYYY easier than when you import photos as a sequence. Doing the photos always bogs my computer right down which ends up killing a lot of time. The other option would be to render it down but that takes time too. Again, more time lost.
So as much as you made some great points and I feel like if I wanted to step up the quality and I was willing to lose a few of the conveniences of the way I did it, I would switch... But you haven't quite convinced me. I'm interested to see what handheld S&Q would look likr. No gimbal but still shooting in movie mode... Time do do some more testing! Thanks Yash! Thanks for the idea. I'll try with a piece of gaffer on my screen to center my subject, and with my gimbal mount on a monopod. On my GH5s, with timelapse mode, it doesn't take photo when I'm focusing.

Shaking in the first couple of hyperlapses was because you did step by step like with a tripod. It's wasn't up and down shaking more like zoom in zoom out one. With the gimbal, you don't need to do this, just walk at the same pace.
Hyperlapse mode on the DJI app using the Osmo accomplishes it excellently n effortlessly. U can also use the hyperlapse mode on the Samsung s9+ and just use the Osmo without the app

Great vid and tutorial Dunna. I have the same camera and gimbal (but version 1? Without the nice camera plate). Looks as if you're using the 18-105? I have that lens too but I saw how minimal the cage you have on the 6500? What is that? I have a cage but it didn't look like it wrapped around your entire camera?
I have a smallrig cage that goes all the way around but on my other a6500 I have a smallrig L bracket and I LOVE it, I don't often actually use the cage to mount things, I just like the extra weight and the wooden grip, but the L bracket has a better grip and allows you to mount in portrait position too!
I was scrolling through and when I saw ur thumbnail I was like "that looks like Government House". Then I saw the name dunna did it. I was actually there last week doing a hyperlapse at government house and quit because there were no markers or tiles on the ground coming up the lawn...so I went on YT to look for tips and there you were. Photo method is just so much higher in quality, and it's quite hard to process and stabilize. If it's just B-roll, then gimbal it.

I think laziness is a great adviser if you dont discourage it) I figured out exactly the same thing, though I shoot GH5 and I can set 2fps 4k recording which I found perfect for hyperlapses involving moving people. 1 fps is just too fast! 2 fps - is ideal for that. And 4k video is not that far away quality wise from photo. 2fps also helps to make footage more stable and fluid. And, if your are not planning to move gimbal, set it into lock mode.
Agreed! Laziness can force efficiency and ingenuity! Not for everyone but for the person with the right mindset. That's awesome that you found it for the gh5 and that it can still be 4k. Unfortunately on the a6500, the s&q mode is limited to 1080p

Dang didn't notice your video since 2018.. anyway, sorry for being late to the party y'all. What about stop animation? I have Panasonic S1H. I used stop animation, with automatic shutter on, it takes pictures every ..however many second you choose. At the end, it asks if you want to create a video. It does it internally for for ya, and you can download that specific video onto your production.
That would be cool as long as you know you can make the moves in between!
Other thoughts to try. Attach camera (and gimbal if have one) to a bicycle so that it stays level and you can turn

Have you looked at software hyperlapse that would use video? Like Microsoft Hyperlapse?

I haven't looked into that, I use lrtimelapse when I'm doing big timelapse s though.
You May want to try a Mono pod to see if that work out your smoothness that all I got, but you did good
Compass' are a very nice way to move in a single direction, set one correctly and tape it to your shoe (two might help), then place a line of duct tape across your chest to use as a flat anchor so your gimbal is always at the same level pending your posture is fixed. Also, tie a measured rope on both of your ankles so each step is the exact same distance, you'll look like a freak but the consistency will be there.

Hi! Great tutorial. Which music library do you suggest? I like the different moods for each section.
I think at the time I made this, I was using Artlist. I personally use Musicbed, Epidemic Sound, and Artlist. Musicbed is probably my main go to at this point though. The music there is real, commercially released music, not made for a video library, so it feels super professional. Epidemic has a great mix of commercial sounding stuff as well as some that feels like it was made just for video projects. And Artlist is great because you can use it for client projects as well (Musicbed and epidemic subscriptions only cover your own socials)
I also do the same thing you do, it’s not crisp and perfect but it still looks pretty damn good considering you’re saving yourself an hour +.

Love how you showed the different tests not just the polished finished one! I read somewhere the really dirty method is to shoot normal video 24fps or whatever then use the postorise time effect to change the frames per second (to like 12 or below) then speed the clip up to make it smooth. Not sure how well it would work long term but seems ok when I gave it a go for amusement! Also what about interval shooting? Like 1 photo every second to speed up the actual taking a hyperlapse? Not something I've tried yet though!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it! Very interesting about the posterize effect! That would be could because you could also use the footage as regular footage too. And as for interval shots, you could totally do it! And you would retain the editing capabilities too! But you would take away the real time results. Always a trade off!
@@dunnadidit always a trade off for the lazy (of which I fully admit to being one!) Love time lapses and hyperlapses... But they take SO MUCH TIME! I'd love to feel confident about leaving my camera to do it's thing but I'm paranoid about someone nicking it or it falling over etc! 😂 This video has made me want to give it another go though.... And get a gimbal...!

I've done a couple of 'lazy' style hyperlapses with the Osmo Plus and GoPro/FeiyutechG6 just shooting at regular frame rate going for a walk and speeding it up in post eventually put them in a reel and travel video on Sydney. Came out pretty good.

I usually put the Sony in time lapse mode take a picture every sec or two put the camera on a gimbal and walk very smoothly. You could still see it right away once you done and better quality.

How’d you keep the subject in focus on a gimbal? AF? How wide open is the aperture?
It really depends on the situation. You can use subject tracking if you want. Or just use a specific focus point and keep your subject there. Or go into manual focus and try your best to stay the same distance from your subject(good for walking with a subject). And the aperture changes depending on the shot I’m looking to get. This is a broader explanation than just the shot I was doing in the video, but it should still apply. Hope that helps!
Would you add your gimbal to your equipment list? I'm curious what small gimbal will handle your a6500 and 18-105 so well. I have a Crane Plus and am thinking about getting the 18-105 but I'm not sure if it will balance on the gimbal.

I used the pan follow mode. It’s definitely tricky and requires a very light touch.
Hey, enjoyed the style of your video and taking the risk of trying something new despite the warts you'd discover. I'm using Ronin S and always get wander left and right. You don't seem to get that in your approach shots. I like to leave SmoothTrack on so I can adjust tilt pan at end or do you use finger controls? I've increased deadpan to reduce input but that didn't help. Would love to get some good tips.
I think for the most part I found that having it in lock mode worked best. And for the left and right wander I just had to be super careful about my walk. Also, a little warp stabilizer goes a long way with this too. Hope that helps!!

Best advice is to decrease your shutter speed to create a motion blur lines as you are moving for the hyperlapse, it helps to hide the shakes for the footage as shown in the video(way too shaky as the shutter speed is too high).
I definitely figured I'd end up playing with the shutter speed as I keep trying this but I didn't think of it helping the steadiness! Thanks for the tip! I know a slower shutter is typical if you're doing photos for a hyperlapse but so you think it will add blur to the things that are supposed to be steady since I'm moving continuously?
I've tried it on one of my recent shoot, with alittle warp stabilising, the motion blurred lines, blends the up and down stagger movement of the hyperlapse. as compared to higher shutter speed, each frame of unsteady movement will be shown drastically.

Sorry to jump in here, but Yeah, I think that experimenting with the shutter speed will be neat. Things closer to the camera (ie, around the edges) will have more relative movement and will be more blurred - probably you can find a sweet spot where you get a 'Star Trek Warp' kinda effect, without blurring the center/target of your video. :)
A cheaper way than buying a gimbal to do it the lazy way is to buy a GoPro. 💁 But for this sequence, I'd still prefer handheld raw photos. The whole scene as a hyperlapse only lasts 2 seconds, so maybe that's about 60 shots. I'd add the pics to FCP, then manually transform each in FCP with the horizon marker on (zoom in and pick a focal point and try to stick with that), then select all, make a compound clip, export that clip, then bring it back in and try the FCP stabilization features to fine tune. It's not as bad as it sounds...

Maybe it´s a silly question but why not simply speed up the footage in post? Doesn´t that do the exact same without all the hassle?
The hassle there is that you end up with TONS of footage that is super hard on your computer(speeding up footage by that much really bogs down a cpu)! By doing it this way you end up with a small clip, already sped up for you so when you go to edit it, it’s already ready for you! There would definitely be advantages to shooting regular video and speed it up too, like the ability to slow it down at any point if you want. But that’s part of the trade off I suppose. Same with shooting photos for a timelapse the original way. It’s great cause you have raw files to work with, but there are trade offs like super slow workflow and heavy cpu usage as well.

Yeah I get the point but honestly I have a superfast computer and editing even large clips is not an issue. I´d rather do it this way and also have the opportunity to change the speed as you already mentioned instead of doing it "manually". This is my way of beeing lazy ;-)
Haha well there you go! I go back and forth depending on the situation, if I know I’m going to speed it up, it only takes me like 8 seconds to set it up in camera between regular video and S&Q. But if I’m not sure if I’ll want it all sped up, I’ll just shoot video and choose later. Flexibility FTW! Just do whatever works best for your flow!

Yeah you're right! The best part is that it's way quicker to practice than the normal way though! I used the Sony a6500 with the sigma 16mm and 30mm to film myself. I have 2 a6500's for exactly this reason.

nah, normal hyperlapse is far far superior in terms of quality. Good work takes time.
Totally! I mentioned that a couple times in the video. But it’s nice to have a few tricks in your bag to get it done even when you don’t have the time or if you don’t need that top quality for a specific project.

Dunna Did It copy that, was gonna try do hyperlapse that i can tilt up or around the subject.
SQ might be just good for hyperlapse that you just go in straight direction

Great video, I use my GoPro HERO 7 for hyperlapses.
It's not the sharpest, but for vlog style videos it looks pretty good. and you don't need to edit the footage in post, The GoPro does everything for you!

It was built to celebrate the 40years sisterhood relationship (correct english?) between two cities Alberta and Gangwon-do. Gangwon-do(or Kangwon-do) is a city of Korea where had 2018 Winter Olympic! It was also to pray for successful winter Olympic in Korea. They put the name of city . 🤓 I did googling lol.

There are lots of great options but a lot of it will depend on your budget.

Man you did wrong you have to focus and put your grid line in an one same of object, like you choose that architecture you simply put your grid to a window's point then move your camera , I have a best, but complex Technic ever , but I do by capturing raw , then edit it , but the editing process I invented that not use everyone it's an advanced Technic , I use 5 methods then I get smooth stable shots

Your gimbal has a lock on subject feature...
yeah I was using it some of the time when it made sense 😁
Although, it’s not so much a “lock on subject” feature as it is a “lock in place” feature where it doesn’t turn or move regardless of your movement. Like if I move down, it doesn’t tilt up to keep the subject in frame or anything.

You totally could do it in any software because there is really no effect applied. In this case there is a bit of speed ramping (which I have a video explaining) but it's more about how I filmed it than what I did in software.

Quick question, and this is ignorance not an insult. Why didn't you just do a video of you walking and speed it up in post?
A couple reasons...
1. Then I can't check if it will look good right then and there. With the s&q mode, I'm literally watching a finished hyperlapse on the back of my camera. If something isn't quite right, I know right there and can fix it.
2. File sizes are way bigger if you shoot regular speed video. So you have to deal with that. A 4 minute file vs. a 10 seconds video.
3. Speed remapping in premiere pro seems to be one thing that makes my computer work really hard and struggle a bit... So this method avoids hangups because a bunch of clips are sped up in post.
There are plenty of arguments why it would be better other ways too, but those were some of the trade offs why I tried it the way that I did 😁

What do you mean?
@@dunnadidit I mean that for example in some of your videos, you have English subtitles enabled, but they are not the same as those generated automatically. When you give the option of "automatic translation" it is much more precise.

Ah gotcha. Sometimes I have time to go through and fix the auto generated subtitles, but sometime I just leave them as auto generated. Generally its still the auto ones but I go in and fix problems. Actually, on my most recent 4 or 5 videos I've been using a service to do proper subtitles. Hopefully that helps... I didn't know if anyone actually used subtitles.

In the way that I showed, I end up with one video anyway, not photos. But it’s already pre sped up so I’m not dealing with a super long video eating up space on my hard drive :)
I'm guessing if you want to speed the footage up, depending on what you want to achieve, you may want to walk very slow. Otherwise, when you speed up the footage there are not that much of actions going in the scene beside your camera movement.
Absolutely correct, this effect would be much more interesting to watch if there was some foreground movement going on. Unfortunately my location wasn’t the best choice but it worked to test out whether the concept would work at all.
