    I really appreciate that you jump right in with instruction!! Many other people babble and giggle so much before actually showing anything useful. Thanks also for your clear drawing and explanation. I will definitely give these methods a try as I hate the look of bust darts and much prefer garments that drape naturally. Thanks :)

    I realized pretty much as soon as you started that this video would not help with what I'm trying to do (make something that was curved with a dart flat, think removing a bust dart so that a vest could fit a man), but I ended up watching the whole thing anyway because it was fascinating and informative right out of the gate, I'll definitely be checking out more of your patterning content

      That's right! The dart is there to accommodate the volume (hips, bust, neck or whatever it is), so you can't just get rid of that volume, otherwise you won't fit into the garment and it will pull over those areas. So you have to let the dart "out" somewhere.

    Thank you for this tutorial. I need to remove bust darts as I have had a double mastectomy and dresses and tops with darts look horrible on me. I am wondering what to do with a sleeve if the armhole has been made bigger, do I add the extra on the side seams of the sleeves or on the cap? Thanks again.

    • @rhonddalesley
      @rhonddalesley Рік тому

      Hi, there’s a couple of different ways that I know of and one is to slash and spread the sleeve in three sections (one in the middle and the others a couple of inches or so on either side) down to the bottom of the sleeve then smooth the top of the cap off.
      Or, you can cut the cap off and do the same thing then stick it back on which doesn’t add any width to the bicep, either of these can make the sleeve cap taller but that can be sorted by shaving a bit off the top.
      I hope that makes sense and is helpful. There are UA-cam videos about it maybe titled ‘how to make a sleeve cap wider’ or something like that, good luck and have fun with it 😊

    I don't understand how this works, in theory. That 1.5" dart bulk would have been sewn, decreasing the length of the side seam and overall perimeter. But here, we're taking that amount of dart bulk and distributing it around the pattern without sewing any of it away. Therefore, wouldn't the pattern become 1.5" too big in perimeter?

    • @jimmyeng663
      @jimmyeng663 Місяць тому

      That is the point of it, a dart is to make the garment closer to the natural body shape and taking away the dart will make it less formed. You can't have a garment hug the body without adding darts to make it closer to the body unless it's stretch fabric.
      To visualise, imagine under the front bust with a dart from the waist. That will show you the curve of the breast more because the dart conforms to its curve (fitted style). When you take away the dart the curve of the breast is less prominent because the fabric just drops down from the bust point (casual/relaxed style).

  • @purplebouquetnn2956

    Thank you. This is concise, helpful and informative. If you add 1/4 to the front armhole, do you alter the front sleeve accordingly or do you simply ease in the extra length? Also, may I add a fifth option of where to rotate the bust dart to? 1/4 to 1/2 could be eased into the sideseam and the dart roof, blended into a curved seam.

  • @momzilla9491

    This seems like a great way to get rid of the Bust Dart. I thought that the bust dart is to level the back waist to the level of the
    front waist? If this is true, what happens to the back waist level when the dart is eliminated?
    Biggest thanks!

    Has anyone done what I do ?? ….and that is sew a gathering stitch in the side seam just where the bust dart is and loosely gather it , distributing the fullness, then just sew up the side seam like normal? 😊 On loose fitting blouses, this seems to work well for me.

    Hi Alisa, I drafted my two dart bodice block with the help of your bodice with darts video. In this video you show only the bust dart. How to turn a two dart bodice block into a dartless one?

    • @ThoughtfulCreativity
      @ThoughtfulCreativity  11 місяців тому

      You simply don't sew the waist dart and leave it as is. Bust dart needs to be moved and let out somewhere where it would not create awkward puckering, but would retain the same amount of fabric to accommodate the volume of the bust, with the waist dart - it is already at the hem, just leave it as is and don't sew it.

    Ty! ❤️ -- i have a Qs pls, so when you “distributed” a small amount of the dart in the neck and shoulder lines, why when you moved the actual dart and opened it in the armhole/ bottom - why didn’t you minus the amounts of the shoulder & neck? …. Like why did we move those if the dart amount was entirely put in armhole & bottom… pls advise- ty 🙏🏼

      I noticed the same thing when she got to the armhole and showed the option of matching up the dart lines entirely (which wouldn't have subtracted the neck and shoulder amounts i think), but when she did her final adjustment for the armhole and taped it down, that was only 1/2" so in the end I think she did end up with 1/2" armhole, 1/2" hem, 1/8" neckline, 1/4" shoulder, which roughly equalled the starting dart measurement.

      You will have a longer side seam in the front than in the back and you won't be able to match the side seams. Do a test of what you're wondering about and see what happens - the best way to learn.
