Kinda sweet to see a dude who looks like a US Marine make candles lol. Thanks man, very helpful and cost effective!
May be he is retired US Marine😀
He talks like a marine too
I'm definitely trying this!
Thought exactly the same thing lmao love it
Straight to the point for adults. No music, no cartoons. 😊
NOW that's what I call, how to do a video/tutorial! Thank you so much for NOT talking to your audience as-if-we've NEVER heard of the word MOLD. I also, greatly appreciate your not only getting to the point/s, but kept it clear and very concise. Doing so made your tutorial a pleasure to listen to and very easy to follow. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Omg finally a video showing how to make an inexpensive silicone mold without using soapy water. After watching tons and tons of other videos this is by far the most informative. Thank you!
100% agreed, so many videos that just seem to add unnecessary work without clear benefits. This is fantastic!
Agreed, i just wish for metric measurements so the rest of the world does not need a calculator to fully enjoy this tutorial
@Delana Taylor Online idk where you’re buying your silicone but Walmart sells it for around $5 and the gun is $2 and you don’t need a respirator mask. You can just use a regular mask (go to your local cvs, Walgreens or krogers and get 3 free N95 masks) and maybe a fan or open a window. As for the acetone you can get that for around $5 too. You’re looking at a less than $20 material list. Not $60.
@@TylerAO12 yes you don't NEED the respirator, as long as your doing it with ventilation, and the n95 type masks are actually only made for particles not vapor, but they may cut down on it a little, but really unless your doing making molds full time it just stings the nose a little. Also the trial version of the actual mold making kit is a not as much in volume as the caulk. For a quick short term mold it a good alternative, but the advantage of the actual mold kit is they are more durable longer term molds for longer production runs.
@Delana Taylor Online The mask and gun are reusable so in the long run it is more cost effective unless it is a one time deal making a mold, then it would be netter to just buy the silicone compound. Also it depends on the quantity used.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. There's a woman on YT that's always using her Amazing Molds to records different creatiins and advertises the molds FOR SALE of course but refuses to show us how to make them. I thank you again
Great video .... you can also slip the mold back into another milk carton to maintain the shape with out using the tape
Thanks a lot! Finally, after watching a dozen of totally worthless videos I found a simple answer to a simple question "How to liquefy utility silicone?" The answer is ACETONE! Holy Goodness! :) Thanks again and God bless You!
Same here. Have you tried this?
I agree.
I’m with you on that 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I have tried this and it did not work for me at all. I even tried alcohol all I did was make one big mess. I don’t know if there’s something I missed but I would love to be able to do this he makes it look so simple
@@sherrilynnhill Did you make sure to use straight silicone? A lot of the silicones contain additives for various reasons so ensure the label says "100% silicone" or "no additives" on it. Same with the acetone -- some nail polish removers are half water so you're not getting much acetone. Try 100% acetone from a building supply or hardware store.
Notes taken from video if this helps anyone:
▪︎2 tubes Type 1 Silicone Caulking with caulking gun.
▪︎8 oz. of Nail Polish with Acetone - might need to add more to mix until it's a runny consistency like maple syrup.
▪︎1 milk carton or something wax lined or a disposable container that will be bigger since we need 1/2 inch all around the sides when set.
▪︎Place object to mold in this case a Mason Jar - place it upside down.
▪︎Mark the back side on the disposable carton where the seam line will be. (This is also where you want to set the back of the mason jar or object you are molding).
▪︎Pour in the silicone mix then after filled to the top use a skewer to remove any air bubbles and flatten out the top.
▪︎When set cut the jar out by making a jagged edge cut on the back seam side you marked. Will be set when it's solid & rubbery - typically 12 hrs but check to he sure it's set 1st.
▪︎Now pop out the molded object after cutting the jagged edged seam line.
▪︎Make a hole in the bottom of the mold for the wick once sent.
▪︎Before putting in medium/resin/wax be sure to tape up the cut jagged side so the medium doesn't leak out.
▪︎For candle makers go thru typical steps of making a candle...
▪︎Used in video: Kentucky 143 Paraffin Pillar Wax from Kentucky Essentials.
Cliff's Notes! I love it.
This can only work for wax? Or can use plastic or aluminum in the mold?
@@snoopu2601 Hmmm, good question I haven't tried aluminum or plastic. I would think so but I could not say for sure based on never trying it myself. I'd say plastic would be more likely than aluminum.
@@heartmomma6460 I worry about plastic because I've been able to melt plastic toy cars in acetone (I did it as a little kid)
Thank you 🖤 I tend to forget what I've heard or read so your notes are extremely helpful 😊
Thank you so much. This is the first time I’ve seen acetone used to liquefy the silicone. All the other tutorials put the silicone into soapy water. Your method seems to create a more accurate mold. Thanks again.
Those methods don't produce 3D molds.
Because the silicon is too thick
Thank you it will help me a lot! GOD Bless!
Not quite _all_ the other videos, but you're right about 99.9999% of them. They either use cornstarch or they use dish soap to make the silicone more manageable. But the GEO Sustainable channel on YT has talked about using naphtha to thin out silicone. However, he never really got into this size of a pour project like Timber Ridge, herein. If either acetone or naphtha work, then it could be there are other solvents which might work to thin out silicone caulk. The cheapest one might be 90-99% alcohol, but I've never seen anyone try it.
That was brilliantly no-nonsense instructions. Thank you for taking the time to share - it is much appreciated. Regards from UK
since you used a milk carton for the outer mold you could tape it and slip it back into another milk carton to use as the mother mold for extra support.
Hey man your video demo of this silicone mold is the over the top best of all. And i like that you explain on detail everything. Thanks bro. There is no other video like this one on the iternet.
Good video, no sound, just clear and concise language❤
This is exactly what I was wanting. Most people are making more putty but I wanted something pourable
This is the best tip I have ever seen for silicone mold making. I work with epoxy and have tried a few of the off the shelf overpriced options with ok results but it gets expensive, sometimes too expensive to make one off items. this is an awesome affordable option as I am asked all the time for custom shapes and pieces.
I would suggest that you pour silicone in only one spot, allow it to find its own way so there are no bubbles. Usually, you pour into one corner, continually pour slowly (especially thick rubber) to prevent capturing air pockets. There are many great vids to show you this technique.
thanks for sharing that tip... also vibrating or tapping under, may help the bubbles to arise
What about pouring high so you get a thin stream by the time it hits the mold??
🤦♀️ I’ve made molds like this, but used cornstarch with the silicone... it works, but this looks soooo much cleaner of a process! Thank you!
I was so confused why people used silicone rubber and not cheaper silicone sealant, but you answered it! THANK YOU! (He said a silicone tube is too thick so won't make an accurate mold)
This video is excellent! You explained everything so we'll, I don't feel like a moron anymore. And I learned an alternative in mold making that doesn't eat up all my Dawn dishwashing liquid. And not much clean up too. So Awesome. My husband thanks you immensely. He's going to supervise. So next time he can be my trusty assistant. Thanks.
You had me at "fraction of the cost"! Great video!
Lol I totally agree!😊
As an artist. It's the best video I ever saw. Thanks a lot my friend.
Thanks for the information and the demo. I will be trying to make a UCO candle lantern mold for the candles
I love that the subtitles said you are a camel making channel!
Honestly, this is exactly what I was looking for! Liquid Silicone.. better then the cornstarch combo! It was messy and didn't really get all the details. thanks!
Also just a tip for the rest of you perfectionist out there, the zig zag technique is great but you leave an awkward seem that will bug some of us.. but a fix for that is to stay with the zig zag technique BUT on the outside half of the silicone but as you get closer towards the inside or your object, make a line straight..I know it seems impossible just thinking about right now but once you have the razor blade and you're doing it it works out.
I would have loved to see the candle you made. Great video though! Thank you for sharing!
thank you sir for the good tips
Thank you. Very easy to follow.
Definitely going to try this method! Thank you for sharing 🏆
Thanks for being fast paced .
From New Zealand thank you,i make soap and was going nuts trying to figure out a way to make a Perfume Bottle Soap without wasting soap base to carve out,so now i will try your technique,Have a wonderful Xmas with your loved ones and friends
can you explain why to use NAIL POLISH REMOVER over corn starch or other materials. ? what advantage does this serve.
It makes it thinner so more detail is copied
I like this video much better than the other silicone mold video with the silicone cornstarch and food coloring that gave me the flux now I got to go try this one
Did it work where you did not get sick?
The zig-zag seam is so simple, yet genius. Would have never thought about doing that.
I've searched alot and this is the only video which explains how to make liquid and less thick silicon in a cost effective way. All other channels have been using the smooth-on product which 1) expensive and 2) not available in Pakistan.
Thanks alot. Will try this. I wonder if silicon with this viscosity can capture smaller details on objects
Brilliant i have mould making stuff coming thankfully too expensive to buy too much this idea epic
Great content. A lot of love to you from the Beautiful Islands of Trinidad and Tobago 💞.
You are a godsend. Thank you so much for this. Just what I needed ❤️. Imma try this with a resin project I’m planning.
Great video. The best and the easiest way to make a molld. Thank you.
Awesome thank you so much. Boy you are a speed talker yet you're still easy to follow.
Great thank you! Would it work well if I put it in a bag to pipe it out like icing?
I didn't know to use acetone to thin silicone, Thanks so much!
Thanks for your expertise 😘🙌🏾💎
I tried dollar store nail polish remover and even though not 100% acetone, it worked!
Fantastic video👍 Nice marine style hair🤩
VëRý VëRý helpful & useful. Problem solving ,,, me going to work on it no doubt .
Wow!!!!! Thank you so much for this video 😀😀😀 just found your channel. I work with resin, and never would of thought to make my own moulds this way! I love this idea, cheaper it costs me. Cheaper it costs all !!!! Thanks again.
Thank you for the great information! Can’t wait to make a Silicone mold.
Very helpful. Thanks mate!
Awesome video 🖖👍
I guess that gaskets could be also easier be made with this Methode. 🤔
When making molds such as this along with the cornstarch would one need to use mold release as well?
I'm a Vietnam Combat Marine and I purchased 4 EGA to mount on my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. They are all rigid and I need to make a mold of them that I can put against the side of the truck to cast them with the proper curves to paste to the truck. I plan to paint the truck a gloss black including the EGA. I would welcome any suggestions you might have to help me. Thanks.
Maybe not a jar but what ever you are molding do you have to use a release agent. Wouldn't the silicone stick to item?
Awesome video of exactly what I'm trying to do. Gonna go try this now, thank you!
I could not get the acetone to mix into the silicone. I used the same silicone you did and 100% acetone. Waiting for my mold to harden, not sure if it will work because it was very thick.
Excellent tutorial 🙏🏻
I'd suggest using another piece of milk carton bottom to seal the seam in the mold and it also keeps the mold in shape.
Great video, help me with the silicon idea.
Can I just grab regular acetone from my hardware store or do I absolutely need the Nail polish acetone?
This is very cool. I think white spirit can also be used in case you have a plastic object you want to duplicate, so that the acetone doesn't melt the plastic. Also, I was thinking, that it would be excellent to use a vacuum pot to pop the bubbles in the silicone mix!
Not everyone has a vacume pot. Or even knows what one is. Let's not complicated something that seems to be un complicated.
@@paulinehunt4069it was just a tip, because he was using sticks to get air bubbles out. For candles it doesn’t matter much, but for casting plaster it does.

Just explaining most of us are novices. Things can be overwhelming. Great that you offered advice. I am actually researching things you suggested. So Thank You very much. It is how we learn and get better.
Hi! I’m wondering if it’s possible to copy an existing 3D mold for a full rose the same way?
Excellent video. Thank you. Can’t wait to try this
Doesn’t the acetone expand the silicone and cause shrinkage when the mould dries?
Best easiest vid for molds I've found, awesome thanks!
In an unrelated note, why do I feel like this guy is retired military and got bored after a week and started doing this random as hell stuff lmao
Best video yet on how to do this.
Ok, cool! I can see how this method could be used to make a mold of the outer part of a shoe sole, but how would a mold of the inner part of a shoe sole be made?
Hello I have a question. You use acetone to thin the silicone but wouldn't naphtha thin it better? idk this maybe a dumb question. thank you for the video
This soldier isn’t making candles, he’s make Mandles baby!
Crazy simple but ingenious at the same time!
One question: my object (around which I will build the mold) has a bit of a rough surface. After the silicone will cure, will I be able to demold the cured silicone? Should I use a demolding agent?
Would've liked to have seen a close-up of that candle; I'm curious as to how it (the mold) holds or doesn't hold intricate detail.
We appreciate you Brother 👌🏽
Does anything else work as a mixing medium? Something like rubbing or denatured alcohol?
You say in the video that "the acetone evaporates out" which makes me think alcohol is a possible alternative. But I'm not familiar with the chemical reaction it would have with the silicone.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe.
Can u use mineral spirits instead of acetone?
Thank you so much for this informative video
Wouldn’t it flow better if it was thinner? Can I use any evaporating liquid? Rubbing alcohol?
is it possible to use paint thinner instead of acetone
That looks good. Do I see bubbles in there?
I'm curious, I know acetone evaps quickly. 20 oz of silicone and 8 oz acetone, is there a big flux in your molds mass? Does it evap off and end up not covering the entire mason jar or does it dry before that happens?
it takes a while to dry.. u have enough time
Dude that was awesome...sweet and to the point...thanks
Can you pour in the same material?
hence make the mold out of silicone and acetone and once it cures, i can make a "mason jar" silicone thingie?
Thank you so much for this information, helps so much! 😘
....thank you sir...just what i needed....
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you!
OMG, that is so easy. I love it
What are the measurements for the acetone bc my mold is still wet after a full 24 hours
My only question is what types of things can you NOT use as a mold cast with this recipe? Would the acetone melt say plastic? What about metal or iron items? Candlemaker to candlemaker thank you for this video!!! 🥳
I was hoping I would find this question in the comments section answered. I would like to know that as well.
First time on your chanel . I love it ! You are so professional and neat 💜💜💜
Very good tutorial, I watched quite a few and I think your method is the easiest.
Can you use epoxy resin with the mold?
Yes you can! He mentioned that particular medium just before he poured his wax into the mold.
Thank u 4 posting this ! Best
Can you use chip board to make a mold? This is an awesome video I had no Idea I could make it myself.
Been watching a few of your videos as I'm looking to make a silicone mold for the first time. Thanks so much for proving a cost-effective approach. I watched the video where you created some molds for resin using cornstarch and here you are using acetone with silicone. Is the difference what media you are casting in the molds that determine cornstarch vs. acetone or either work? Thanks again
Thanks Tim, this is great! And so much cheaper.... thank you for sharing this with us 🙂🤙
Hi, will the smell of the mold affect the wax and FO?
Is there a certain ratio to mix the acetone and caulk? Or just mix it until it resembles thick water?
I'm a new candle maker. I much appreciate the mold tutorial. For the wick could I pour a small amount of the wax into the mold to set the wax or should I do it all together?
Love this video thank you! What is Type 1 silicone? I just want to know what to look for at the hardware store
Thank you 🙏
Excellent!
Thanks for posting this!
