G Kuljian Wow! This is news to me. Thank you. I was struggling with the belly and chest area fat for years. It was the Wheat belly lifestyle that I lost alot when adopting a wheat free diet. Yes that massive coconut oil industry. Not a word said against the soybean industry though, which happens to be huge in comparison, and has been gaining power and influencing scientific literature with backhanders since the days of Nixon. Coconuts can't be grown in most of the US. Go figure
There is a big problem here. The study shown at around 2:40, he says showed no significant difference. But if you actually read the study there is a significant difference. Just a note here guys. I use coconut oil once daily when cooking my six whole free range eggs and veggies. I’ve been eating this for 5 years now and my body fat percentage ranges from 8-12% throughout the year. The only thing that changes my waste size is the amount of carbohydrates i consume specially the High glycemic variety. I base my diet on low glycemic foods and consume plenty of vegetables along with plenty of animal protein and fat. And i am way healthier now than i was when i ate more rice, pasta, breads etc. You have to find what works for you. Some people thrive on different diets, the one thing is to stay away from processed foods and consume plenty of vegetables. The trick is not however on whether is animal or plant based foods. Just stay away from processed and eat the proper portions
I was a devotee of the low fat (oil-free), high carb WFPB movement for 2 plus years and I was a bloated and puffed out and I wasn't losing weight. I switched to a high fat, low carb diet and I've lost 50 pounds in 4 months. Fat is where it's at. If you're insulin resistant, you will never lose weight if you're eating fruit, starchy vegetables, grains, beans, or root vegetables. I can't eat animal products without suffering from inflammation... but coconut oil and coconut milk has become a huge part of my diet. When i used to eat fruits and starches, i thought about food all the time. I had constant sugar cravings. Now, I eat only 1 meal a day. Which typically includes a large salad with at least 1/4c of olive oil... in addition to adding coconut oil and coconut milk to my hot beverages. I have the best energy that i've ever had in my life. No hunger, no cravings, no suffering, easy weight loss. FAT IS WHERE IT'S AT!!!
Hey man, I was interested in learning more about this. I looked up one of the studies and I believe you have made a mistake for the study titled "Effects of Dietary Coconut Oil on the Biiochemicaland Anthropometric Profiles of Women Presenting Abdominal Obesity." I looked up the abstract for this study. If anything this study should be a under the category of a pilot study because it only lasted a period of 2 weeks with a small sample population of 40 people. We can't take this as a fair indication of conclusive results. The abstract mentioned that the findings of weight loss were clinically insignificant but that the coconut oil group lost more than the control. It mentioned that the Homeostatic Model Assessment (HOMA) was clinically insignificant as well but that the group that had coconut oil had a higher HOMA-S. The abstract did, however, mention that the coconut oil group had better HDL to LDL cholesterol ratio than the control. Also at 2:57 in your video you misinterpreted HOMA- S (SENSITIVITY) for HOMA-IR (INSULIN RESISTANCE). The way it is presented at 2:57 means that although the group recieving coconut oil released a little bit more insulin than the control, insignificantly more, their insulin sensitivity was better. This means they had a better insulin response. Reference: Assunção, M. L., Ferreira, H. S., dos Santos, A. F., Cabral, C. R., & Florêncio, T. M. M. T. (2009, July). Well, many people have thin skin, so i would imagine some gets absorbed. Lots of supplement and hormone treatment works topically. Also, how would they measure how much gets absorbed? If its absorbed locally, it wont show up in the bloodstream to any significant degree.
My LDL cholesterol went up to 120 when I was roasting my veggies in coconut oil. When I learned to roast on parchment paper without oil, my LDL's dropped to 60! No other change; still vegan, but no coconut oil or any real added oil for cooking. 120 to 60. That's enough for me.
A recent BBC programme ''Trust me I'm a Doctor'' claimed after conducting it's own study that eating 2tblspoons of coconut oil increased HDL and had no effect on LDL. Off course the same programme compared eating 2 apples to that of eating 1 can of soft drink, sugar wise without mentioning anything about the fibres affect on absorption

Are people still not getting saturated fat is not something to avoid completely? Saturated fats are good for testosterone and other hormones for one thing.
Joseph De Santos exactly, carbs in general are totally unnecessary. I get most my sugar from Really Raw Honey which is never heated or strained so legit raw, but other than that I limit sugar pretty strictly, I do one meal a day actually. Carbs in a 4:1 ratio to 50g protein for OMAD I think is ideal, it's good for testosterone too and building muscle, high protein only once a day is too and I don't think the body really assimilates more than 50g protein at a time. So that being the only significant protein I take in daily aside from around 6-7 from collagen before bed 4 hours after my meal, you really get the most out of that amount then especially with carbs that high. But like 85% of that isn't from sugar, some from the raw honey and then Go Raw sprouted seed granola has sugar from dates and that's pretty much it. So 1000-ish cals from protein and carbs, then 500-ish from fats, a tablespoon each of coconut oil and ghee for saturated fats. I do just a teaspoon of C8 MCT oil morning and around noon, then eat around 5-6pm, so from the MCT oil and things like matcha green tea and maybe 20 cals of dulse, and then collagen and raw honey before bed I probably total around 1700 cals a day. But I literally accidentally build lean mass from 145lbs to 167lbs in 5 months doing something similar, with similar caloric intake but more protein and less carbs. 40g protein then again 4-5 hours later in the morning, totaling around 1000 calories in that time, then 500 or so the other 19-20 hours but low protein. I wasn't even training to build mass or exercising, I just went from picking eggs to catching turkeys on an insemination crew, so that was effectively like isometric training.
Fastest way is plain fasting: ua-cam.com/video/E484qiQXxzM/v-deo.html And no, he didnt gain it all back. In fact, studies show people losing weight by fasting are the most successful at keeping the weight off.
Of course it all comes down to calorie balance. Calories burned from exercise only contribute 10-30% of your intake. Exercise does help improve your BMR as does fasting. A low calorie diet will actually reduce your BMR. This was just stated as a general rule of thumb and to combat the food industry's shift of blame from their product to telling you that you just need to move more ;-) www.vox.com/2016/4/28/11518804/weight-loss-exercise-myth-burn-calories www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/weight-loss-80-percent-diet-20-percent-exercise
Would be very interesting to look at coconut and mtc oil in the context of a fast or intermittent fasting. Since only adding fat to your breakfast appears to be quiete silly, replacing it with some fat might have very different effects!
Thank you for all your honesty and work in nutrition. I’m a nutrition coach and I love educating about the deception these corrupt companies market the lies to the Public square . Anything that has been processed from its Whole Foods source is polluted and dangerous to the body .
Duh. You're making videos about the obvious now? If you're on a high carb diet, don't eat too much fat. No more than required for essential fatty accid consumption. But, when you're on a low carb diet, coconut oil is great!
No nutritional training in med school? THAT'S A TOPIC GREGER COVERS. Get with the program here. If people are going to comment you think they'd do their research first...he started in med school, became an MD, went a different path and specialized in clinical nutrition, did so many speaking engagements around the world he couldn't keep up so he created a website. He's also right now the public health director for International Humane Society, I think he recently retired as a general practitioner and focuses all his attention on NutritionFacts.org, and he recently finished the process/board exam and is now a Lifestyle Medicine Physician. The website is non-governmental, donation and volunteer-based, has 15 - 20 researchers, hundreds more volunteers on the team and goes through thousands of studies each week. Peace out you troll :D
Dr. Greger, when you do these videos are you taking a dump? Kinda sounds that way. I suppose that's when the best thinking takes place. Maybe some oil would smooth things out for you.
QUESTION, So..... I eat alot of falafel. Unfortunately, outside they are usually deep fried in an oil. What would be the “safest” oil for that? Or, is there a safest one at all?
Hi Tony! I'm also a HUGE lover of falafel, and all the fixins to make a falafel sandwich. You can actually air fry falafel and there are several recipes for it. It's a good way to get the taste of falafel as well as the crispy texture of being 'fried'.
Kouya Sakurada Hmmm. Never heard of this. Ill look into it. Ive been buying the frozen uncooked falafel in Whole foods and baking them in the oven. Its when Im outside, Im paranoid about the deep frying oil process. Thank you
2 tablespoons of coconut oil is a LOT! Do people really eat that much on a regular basis? If (when) I use it to cook, I might use 1 teaspoon in a pan to make enough food for four people plus leftovers! But that's not every day and certainly not with each meal - eating 2 tablespoons worth would make me gag. What are they putting it on??
Thanks for all your hard work guys, this worlds nutrition would be a mess without you!!! Ps Love your new cookbook trying to help everyone here in the Canary Islands educate them self.
soconaturalhealth what is bought to us by the soy industry's? Why would the soy industry want to disprove saturated fat when their biggest buyers are from the meat industry?
Poison Ivy, Dr Gregor has been compromised. He no longer reports on who paid for the studies in these vids. You can bet that study in the video comparing soybean oil was paid for by the same.
Can one of the more media-savvy NF.org fans tell me how Greger does his animations and highlights on his UA-cam videos? Does he use something like Adobe suite or Final Cut? Any advice would be much appreciated :) (I'm helping another scientist/science journalist start a youtube channel in a similar vein)
well coconut oil is a lot of saturated fat but how about mct oil? its not a whole food yea yea i know but just from an athletes perspective it sounds promissing to go beyond what glycogen stores are capable to store
Even South Asian countries/regions that use coconut oil use it in curries like lentils that usually have lots of fiber. If u tell any of them to drink coconut oil or milk they would think you r crazy.
Grape seed? Trying to be “0n guard” when eating out and asking for a Vegan menu. So when asking the waiter to find out type if oil their falafel is deep fried in they usually respond with “canola”. I think I should just not order anything deep fried, and just bake them at home. Also look into the “air-fryer”. Thank you all for your responses. !✌🏽
Where did this come from? Its all merchandising quit following all these fads. There's always a new oil, new vitamin every year. Olive oil is one of the very best oils you can use.
this guy has a really weird speech pattern. I think he is trying to sound more animated or something... but I find it difficult to listen to his voice.

My aunt lived in Papua New Guinea, where they eat a lot of coconut oil and she said they were all fat and had high cholesterol. At the time I was trying to convince her to eat it, that it was healthy for everything, she was like, "No way! That's all marketing"
There's multiple studies claiming different things. 😥 I like to cook with that oil over veggie oil or butter bc the fats in it are far better than the kind found in those oils. Saturated fat is good, the others are bad.

I am not sure why there are so many people are pro coconut oil...
Are people still not getting saturated fat is not something to avoid completely? Saturated fats are good for testosterone and other hormones for one thing.
I mean saturated fat compared to sugar is so much healthier for the body.
Faster way is actually getting up and doing cardio.
Fastest way is plain fasting: ua-cam.com/video/E484qiQXxzM/v-deo.html
And no, he didnt gain it all back. In fact, studies show people losing weight by fasting are the most successful at keeping the weight off.
Exercise only contributes to 10%-15% of your total weight loss.
Excercise doesnt contribute 10-15% of your total weight loss, it all depends on your calorie balance.
Of course it all comes down to calorie balance. Calories burned from exercise only contribute 10-30% of your intake. Exercise does help improve your BMR as does fasting. A low calorie diet will actually reduce your BMR. This was just stated as a general rule of thumb and to combat the food industry's shift of blame from their product to telling you that you just need to move more ;-)

Would be very interesting to look at coconut and mtc oil in the context of a fast or intermittent fasting. Since only adding fat to your breakfast appears to be quiete silly, replacing it with some fat might have very different effects!
Is there actually ANY food in existence - where there's not some trade off from digestion to blood stream to cell uptake?
Did you cut it short or fell asleep?
Thank you for all your honesty and work in nutrition. I’m a nutrition coach and I love educating about the deception these corrupt companies market the lies to the Public square .
Anything that has been processed from its Whole Foods source is polluted and dangerous to the body .
Duh. You're making videos about the obvious now?
If you're on a high carb diet, don't eat too much fat. No more than required for essential fatty accid consumption.
But, when you're on a low carb diet, coconut oil is great!
I love this channel!
I just diagnosed of having hypothyroidism pleas talk about it what cause it and how to threat it
nayla 93 Check out Potato Wisdom here on UA-cam. She has the same disease and is thriving on a plant based diet.
Philip I think you have been smoking to much pot. Good luck with your chiropractors and naturopaths lol.
Philip J Fry, RWS and Doodle master having fun yet?
So who is Dr. Gregers political backing, please share?
Umm I think it's time you actually learn what Dr. Greger has done in his career? Your lack of knowledge is sad.
Scary part is local cancer support centre supports frying with coconut oil. Yikes.
Love, love, LOVE this video.
Yes..but the real question is : does the good doctor squat..?
Is coconut milk ok?
Interesting stuff!
Dr. Greger, when you do these videos are you taking a dump? Kinda sounds that way. I suppose that's when the best thinking takes place. Maybe some oil would smooth things out for you.
Its good for you if you are replacing unhealthy calories with coconut oil. ie, a Big Mac being replaced with coconut oil teaspoons.
QUESTION,
So..... I eat alot of falafel. Unfortunately, outside they are usually deep fried in an oil. What would be the “safest” oil for that? Or, is there a safest one at all?
TONY SANTO sorry, no oil is good for you. Neither cold pressed, nor fried. Try no-oil versions.
Make your own. High Carb Hannah has an amazing low fat falafel recipe. 😋👌🏻🌱
Thanks
Hi Tony! I'm also a HUGE lover of falafel, and all the fixins to make a falafel sandwich. You can actually air fry falafel and there are several recipes for it. It's a good way to get the taste of falafel as well as the crispy texture of being 'fried'.
Kouya Sakurada
Hmmm. Never heard of this. Ill look into it. Ive been buying the frozen uncooked falafel in Whole foods and baking them in the oven. Its when Im outside, Im paranoid about the deep frying oil process. Thank you
Eat themselves?

2 tablespoons of coconut oil is a LOT! Do people really eat that much on a regular basis? If (when) I use it to cook, I might use 1 teaspoon in a pan to make enough food for four people plus leftovers! But that's not every day and certainly not with each meal - eating 2 tablespoons worth would make me gag. What are they putting it on??
Now i'm confused. Ive read and been told that coconut oil is good for treating PCOS. Anyone? Help?
Thanks for all your hard work guys, this worlds nutrition would be a mess without you!!! Ps Love your new cookbook trying to help everyone here in the Canary Islands educate them self.
I thought coconut oil series was done. What happened to microwave, no more videos on the subject?
Oh no, the "Bulletproof diet" just went up in flames
Sounds painful for him to speak...?
@Dr. Greger: How about the alleged beneficial effects of coconut oil on dementia?
What about cocoa butter? Specifically, unsweetened Baker's chocolate?
Bought and paid for by soy bean industry
soconaturalhealth what is bought to us by the soy industry's?
Why would the soy industry want to disprove saturated fat when their biggest buyers are from the meat industry?
Poison Ivy, Dr Gregor has been compromised. He no longer reports on who paid for the studies in these vids. You can bet that study in the video comparing soybean oil was paid for by the same.
Can one of the more media-savvy NF.org fans tell me how Greger does his animations and highlights on his UA-cam videos? Does he use something like Adobe suite or Final Cut? Any advice would be much appreciated :)
(I'm helping another scientist/science journalist start a youtube channel in a similar vein)
until 2015?? what happened to until now?
well coconut oil is a lot of saturated fat
but how about mct oil?
its not a whole food yea yea i know but just from an athletes perspective it sounds promissing to go beyond what glycogen stores are capable to store
Womp😐womp: I have been a fool! 😣
I only use coconut oil as a moisturizer... if I eat it once in a while in a vegan dessert like 1x per month
Even South Asian countries/regions that use coconut oil use it in curries like lentils that usually have lots of fiber. If u tell any of them to drink coconut oil or milk they would think you r crazy.
Until you... PUT IT TO THE TEST lmao
Intermittent fasting gives much different results!
So coconut oil is snake oil?
So, are there any other benefits to coconut oil that are false also?
It sure does work well with the ketogenic diet.
Ketogenic diet is cancer...
Ketogenic diet is -cancer- *anti-cancer I corrected it for you....and you are welcome ;-)
You're clueless... Well. Believe whatever you want. :)

Know your enemy. It is not ketones but glucose.
Testing coconut oil with fruit - yeah, the whole coconut - duh.
Instructions not clear got coconut oil on my watermelon
Boy you must hate coconut oil-works for me though.
But does it really? That's the question.
Olive oil is one of the very best oils you can use.
why am i having deja vu
Coconut oil is so sickening, it destroys appetite.
lie
I have been eating it for over two years and my appetite is great
No, you're the one who is lying!
Lmao nice comeback
You don’t eat it plain you cook with it or eat it with things
this guy has a really weird speech pattern. I think he is trying to sound more animated or something... but I find it difficult to listen to his voice.
State of Zan My mom says the same thing about his speech pattern! She can't bear to listen to him, but I love the way he talks, lol.
It's weird. If you go back a few years, he talks like a normal person. Guess this his is "radio voice" and at times, I find it off-putting as well.
To each his own. For me, it works well.
He has developed this because so many of us encourage him. We like it. While I read his books I hear this voice the whole time and love it.
He is forced into a position to be an entertainer and a narrator of scientific papers. Otherwise his channel would not be what it is. Most people enjoy it.
And the fact coconuts are a MAJOR global cash crop, and this...
First study from Malaysia - 10th largest Coconut Producer in the world
Second study from Brazil - 5th largest Coconut Producer in the world
Third study from the USA - doesn't even make the Top 20 list for Coconut Production
www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-world-leaders-in-coconut-production.html
Ok, so a vegan shill who doesn’t like coconuts.
i could listen 2 u talk 4ever #science
Why do you talk like that? It's a quite bizarre affectation.
Why do you write stupid shit on the internet? I guarantee in person you'd have nothing to say about his voice.
+goddins I reread my post and, sure enough, I wasn't addressing you. Your guarantee means nothing.
coconut has very high fiber, that alone will reduce inches off waist
Don't confuse coconut with coconut oil.
My aunt lived in Papua New Guinea, where they eat a lot of coconut oil and she said they were all fat and had high cholesterol. At the time I was trying to convince her to eat it, that it was healthy for everything, she was like, "No way! That's all marketing"
This is a pork beware
😮
straw man.
There's multiple studies claiming different things. 😥 I like to cook with that oil over veggie oil or butter bc the fats in it are far better than the kind found in those oils. Saturated fat is good, the others are bad.
