It's a dune buggy with a rubber Trans Am shell on (the same rubber shell that was also on the stuntcar in a couple of scenes where KITT looks unusually bulky), so it was fine ; ) You can tell because it looks rather empty inside.

Yep. I once read that was one thing to stop making Knight Rider. Wrecked cars cost too much.
Many of the jumps were done with miniatures. It's very well done for the time.
