John Lasseter, who directed Knick Knack, said that the decision to reduce the cup sizes of the girls was Pixar's, not Disney's. To my understanding, back in the early days of Pixar (and the early computer graphics scene in general back then), the people there were young, and the working culture was frat-like. Nowadays, those animators are older and likely have kids who watch their films, so they are more conscious of what they're including in their films. Lasseter said of the original characters' cup sizes, "It was just crossing the line for me personally as a father."
"The only difference is the colo-... _oh my god-"_

One thing to remember is that the 2003 version was released alongside a family friendly movie, and given how sensitive censors are they would’ve had a field day with that one. Meanwhile the original was released at a film festival or expo, giving the animators a lot more freedom

The fact that they went from massive magumbos to a completely flat chest makes me think this change was done very begrudgingly by some pissed off animator at the behest of an executive, like "oh you don't like the tits? well here you go!"
It's to tone down from being inappropriate since it was for children
@valhatan3907 but naturally, big breasted women exist in real life. So making her flat kinda erases that representation. Plus, the short was made for both kids and adults. It was also done for artistic reasons and getting rid of the jugs makes it less impactful. Also, plenty of women in animation made for a wide audience have nicely sized chests, so it's ridiculous anyway.
@@william3100 They do exist in real life, but I think the problem mostly came with how she was presented in the first place. For a kid's movie, a tiny bra that ridiculously small IS rather um... out there. The bazungas themselves were also MASSIVE in comparison to how cartoonishly skinny she was! What I mean here is, it was essentially putting gigantic watermelons on a stick figure, which somewhat understandably didn't jive well with the higher-ups.
Arguably, the back arch and wide ass hips definitely changed the vibes with or without the flat chest
The man who made it had kids in between knick knack and finding Nemo and decided to change it for that reason
1989 is better warmer colors and definitely fits the timeline
I also like the bazoongas they put in
I hate it when they censor the past, im not saying remaking the thing is bad but they should make it available for archival's sake. They made the girl with big bazoongas, they should live with it. This screams george lucas original theatrical release of star wars, being lost in the sands of time.

In 2003, before the short starts, there is a card reading "In 1989, six years before Toy Story, Pixar Animation Studios made this short film." but in 1989, this card is absent.
In 2003, the 1995 logo is used, but in 1989, the 1986 logo was used.
In 2003, the background of the title card's logo is slightly different.
In 2003, the lighting is slightly different as compared to in 1989.
In 1989, the girl on the Miami knick-knack has large breasts unlike in 2003, which she doesn't have them because it was possibly considered offensive. A similar thing goes with the girl on the Atlantis knick-knack but with different lingerie.
In 2003, the Dolby Stereo logo is slightly different as compared to in 1989. The copyright information in 2003 reads "(c) (the copyright symbol) 1989" with an extra "(c) 2003" instead of the word "copyright" followed by MCMLXXXIX (1989 in Roman numerals)", in the Helvetica font rather than the Eurostile font.
After the credits, in 1989, it cuts to the Knick Knack logo then fades to black, but in 2003, it just cuts to black.
In 2003, the sunny jamaica tree has different number of leaves than in 1989.

At this point, if Pixar is ever going to make another Easter Egg/Reference of this short in any of their upcoming movies, I’m hoping to at least see Miami and Knick being together, maybe even cuddling or holding hands. I just really want to see them happy and in love after being apart for their whole lives.
There’s barely any fanart portraying their relationship and I’m a bit sad about it. You’d think after nearly 40 years there would be plenty of ship fanart, but no, they only draw Miami…
I think its because he never got the chance to be with her in the first place. But I do agree, it be cute to see them together

It would be interesting if for the 10th anniversary of Toy Story, Pixar would either put in a remastered digitally-transferred version of Tin Toy or a re-scanned print of The Adventures of André & Wally B.
10th anniversary of Toy Story? Toy Story is 27 years old by now.
@M. Zacharias895 oh, I understand. Just bad phrasing then
And Knick Knack is 33 years old
Fun fact: they actually included the first five Pixar shorts on the CAV Toy Story LaserDisc box set, complete with unedited Knick Knack.
Yeah, but then they gave Andre just a humongous ass
This is still my favorite Pixar short. It still holds up pretty well when considering the tech they had in 1989 VS. today. That wood grain on the shelf looks pretty realistic!
The Sunny Miami/Atlantis knick-knacks were basically PIXAR's prediction of Big Hero 6's Aunt Cass mommy-milker-mod incident,
but in reverse.
That was the least of the problems with that franchise, and most of them had to do with the TV version.
The remade/updated version of the short was first made available to the theatrical screenings of Finding Nemo during its initial theatrical runs.
The pyramid do be vibing though
0:36 WHERE ARE THEY
0:59 it explains why the snowman was so thirsty for her 😂
So these are some of the toys Andy’s mom keeps in her room
Only differences I could note were the intro, slight improvements to the lighting, and, well, we all noticed the other one.
The original looks fitting with the warm colors and 35mm film master. Also, more Bobby McFerrin in the original due to longer credits sequence. The 2003 version just looks sad, because the colors are washed out and it looks like an amateur render by today's standards.
Also, everyone else has talked about the obvious at this point, so no, I will not be stating the obvious, here.
I heard that the warmer colors are there due to the film being worn out, or the fact that they had to point a camera to a monitor to record the film,
They should've remastered the colors of the 2003 version.
Regardless of the reason, it wouldn't of taken any effort to just edit the lighting in post... Not sure why they settled with those mediocre, gross, washed out colors.
he could've just ask the others for help to flip over the snow globe and pull him out of there, lol
To them, it might've sounded like gurgles and bubbles, similar to how the fish from Chicken Little talks
And aren’t they like… melded to whatever they’re standing on?
Both have their charms
Sunny had bigger charms in the original.
@@harrymason4300 Almost as big as Jessica Rabbit's.

Should've just kept the pink filter, it looks cute

1989: no you were used to give her giant knockers and give it a brighter filter
2003: I COULDVE HAD KNOCKERS!?
They really made her chest big in the original version lol
No, they made her chest small in the 2003 version.
Almost as big as Jessica Rabbit's.
@@harrymason4300 did you misread what they said lol
The warm colors in '89 made the original look too bright, so I guess they washed the colors to make it look more "in this time". I don't know why they shortened the end credits for the rerelease. That was their decision.
i think the 2003 version is how the short's supposed to look too.
I know I see a lot of Sunny Miami art all over the net, and now I get why.
Dunno why they had to flatten her completely, maybe just shrink the chest down just a little and it’d still be appropriate.

Masahiro Sakurai saw this change and went “I want that for Zero Suit Samus.”

Loved this short
The 2003 version is definitely better. But I suppose the 1989 version fits in better with its time. Since people did seem to have a thing for characters with big breasts back in the 80's and 90's. I watched this short film in the Cinema along with Finding Nemo. I watched it again after seeing what else was on my Finding Nemo VHS and found it rather boring. I was only 8-9 and didn't understand what the point was.
I watched it again when I was 15 and I actually wondered if I was out of my mind, allowing myself to rewatch it. I couldn't remember anything from it the last times I saw it except the characters Knick Knack, Sunny Miami, and Sunny Atlantis. Only that I remembered finding it boring. However I understood what the point of the short was.
And I actually found it a lot more interesting, especially after finding out that there were two versions of it. I actually thought that Sunny Miami and Sunny Atlantis were the same character originally, and that Sunny Miami somehow got into the fish bowl so that Knick would have another chance to reach her.
I find it irritating that none of the uploads of the 1989 version are in good quality. Since it complicates seeing if there are any further differences besides the breast size and the clam bra in the place of starfish pasties.
Theres bo differences they kept it pretty fairhful.. just removed the girls Double D’s for A cups.

so im the re release shes flat chested and the colors are more enchanced, tink sounds are made when the snow man is running when the snow globe is falling, plus the mermaid wers sea shells insteand of starfish, and the credits cut the ending song short
