- While plenty of musicians have time for their fans and are extremely easy to work with, these artists developed reputations as the kind of people you wouldn’t want to meet, no matter how innovative they were in their genre. Jerry Lee Lewis has had a decades-long rock 'n' roll career, but the man has been scandalous since the ‘50s, while Miles Davis was almost as famous for being a terrible person as he was for being a great jazz musician. From the composer who wanted to end the world to the always-running mouth of Morrissey, let’s take a look at some admired musicians who were awful people.

I attended a Miles Davis concert in Toronto many years ago. He was nearly an hour late, was obviously drunk or high on stage and his playing was awful. Over half the audience, including myself, walked out after only about 15 minutes. Davis was a complete as*hole, at least that evening.
There are a whole lot of musicians, alive and dead, that are just as guilty of that.
Umm, that last guy.. the Russian. I don't understand why he, a crazy guy for sure but certainly not a child or wife abuser, is on this list. If wanting to bring on the Armageddon is equivalent to being "awful" then there are lots of TV preachers who should be on this list...
But TV preachers aren't musicians.

C'mon. Scriabin was a mad genius, but it's unfair to say he was an awful guy.
I met Miles Davis briefly prior to photographing one of his live performances during the 'Man With The Horn' tour. He was relaxed and polite, primarily concerned that I not use flash. I shot another show a year later at a different venue and was stunned when he waved to me briefly from the stage. And FWIW, I am one of the whitest, blue eyed, M-F-ers you will ever meet.
Both shows were excellent, drawing standing ovations. The band was tight and Miles was in remarkably good form.
LOVE MIles...period.

Miles Davis really did sound like he'd smoked all day.
He actually had surgery on his vocal cords in the '50s and was told not to speak too much by doctors during the healing process. But, he got into an argument with someone and ruined his voice forever.

LonelyVariety, not exactly. Cocaine is, well, cocaine. Crack has cocaine as a base, but is cooked with baking soda till rocks are formed. Both are addictive, but crack is more so. Miles never had a crack problem. The musician who did (but has since kicked the habit) is Herbie Hancock.
Edit: I did some research and, both crack and cocaine are addictive, but the reason for crack being more addictive is due to how it's taken. Crack is typically smoked, which produces an intense high with a short duration. The way cocaine is typically used (snorting) produces a less intense high with a longer duration. Because of the intensity and duration of crack, you're more likely to binge more, thus get addicted faster.

as a classical music lover, happy to see a classical composer like Scriabin included - it always seemed to me a kind of trap for any gifted artist that they may fall into the delusion that their own art (as great as it may be) will be the catalyst which saves and transforms the world - better to keep one's expectations a bit lower and remain sane
At one of Miles' performances I caught at Montreux in the 80's, he walked out without acknowledging the crowd, then played the entire concert with his back to the audience. Still sounded great!

James Brown and Al Green should be on the list. James was a menace, he beat every woman he was with including the singer Tammi Terrell. He shot at one wife and beat her with a lead pipe. He also kicked a pool pregnant girlfriend down a flight of stars. Al Green beat his wife Shirley throughout the their marriage even while she was pregnant. Not really that odd. He was in tremendous physical pain beginning in the early- to mid-70's due to various ailments, including a messed up hip and sickle cell anemia. He was probably addicted to painkillers around this time. The pain eventually forced him to retire in 1975. He returned in 1981.

I wouldn't call Axl and awful person. He was a dick and would punch you in the mouth for talking the slightest bit of shit but he was not at a level the people on this list, or those people that should have been like John Lennon, Chuck Berry, and a host of others.

I think it’s natural for humans to be idealistic. We really want to believe good musicians must be good people but that’s just not the case. Some of the musicians I most admire have political views, theological views and philosophical views I completely disagree with never the less I respect them as musicians .
I think Axl Rose should've had a spot there
Nothing surprising but very sad, especially regarding Miles Davis. I love his music ("Sketches of Spain" is one of my favorite albums).

Why wasn't Elvis Costello on this list? He was very racist in his early career. He made racist comments about Ray Charles and James Brown.
