They probably opened it up because they are going to put wine it it. They still use it even after 150 years. The air probably had a very strong/rich wine smell in it.
When Lord Nelson was killed at the battle of Trafalgar his body was placed in a barrel of rum for the voyage home. At the battle of New Orleans in 1814 a British officer was killed and being of royal descent was also shipped home in a barrel of rum. The problem was the rum didn’t make it back. Some thirsty sailors they were.
Preserving bodies in alcohol was a known practice for transporting important figures in the 1800s. Also the sailors didn’t drink the alcohol where his body was, this is a popular myth. If you value truth always fact check.
To clean it and understand how you maintain a living 150 year old thing and then put fresh wine in it. The barrel has a living bacteria ecosystem in it that you have to maintain in order to make wine in it
Well, the barrel is 150 years old and it's still in use every year. I think it's pretty cool that this thing that predates the internal combustion engine is still in use regularly making wine. I just don't run into many things like that in my modern day-to-day life
after the interviewer was in awe........ and shocked to see , how a wine barrel can have this secret door knocked down, he then asked the wine dude, 'so where's the wine i'm supposed to taste from these barrels?'.....wine guy replies. 'oh......i durank it awl"......................'please, come see my record collection.'
It did! Well, a little bit. The point is the barrel is 150 years old and he's still using it every year to age wine. It has it's own ecosystem of bacteria inside that keep it functional
You could definitely drink it. It might not taste so good..... in reality wood breathes so you have to constantly top up a barrel with more wine (or beer or scotch or whatever is in it) so that it stays full. If you let too much evaporate out through the wood then the air that fills the space lets other bacteria grow. That's actually how sherry is made. But assuming the wine was 150 years old and hadn't evaporated for some reason it still probably wouldn't taste so good. Wine is a heterogeneous mixture, meaning it is a bunch of different things mixed up together and given enough time they will all separate according to their own specific gravity. So the sediment that provides all the color would all settle to the bottom, then you'd have a bunch of water, and floating above that on top of the water you would have the alcohol. That's what happens in a bottle over a super long time. The point of this video was that seeing a barrel that was constructed before internal combustion engines were around still being put to use making wine each year is pretty amazing and rare.
@@devenishwines6308 Great explanation, thank you! As many other viewers I thought the barrel should be full of wine, but now I understand the value of the barrel itself. Amazing 😊
That is true, but they must have used something like it. Maybe beeswax, or pitch with horse hair or straw. It's super similar to wooden boats: They'd dry out if you had to haul them out of the water and the wood would shrink. before you put a small wooden boat back in the water people would sometimes fill it with seawater so the planks would expand again and make it water tight
Actually we were opening it up to get it ready for putting wine in it. He ages wine in it every year. That's what's cool about it. It's 150 years old and still in use. Works great. I've got some of the wine in my warehouse now
