I love seeing FEXL get any sort of spotlight or attention, the game deserves it. It deserves far more attention and love from the community man. I played it until i stopped being able to find matches online. I really wish more people would pick it up.
I've watched japanese retro tournaments of even Art of Fighting, World Heroes and the like. Actually even the Jackie Chan game, i just remembered! I believe almost everything can get a tournament there. It's a just a matter of looking for the actual places. Very impressive.
How would one play it online?
Man, I really hope Arika gets the shot to make another fighting game. This game felt so good to play, looks _fantastic_ (doubly so for a self-funded indie game; mad props to Arika's artists), and the whole Fighting Layer cast is so underrated - people won't shut up about Skullomania but everyone else is really thoughtfully designed and a lot of them look cool as hell too.
Hopefully we don't gotta wait another decade or so for a _third_ Fighting Layer game... or a Street Fighter EX 4... or a FL crossover with someone else like King of Fighters. After Terry's cameo in this, who _wouldn't_ want to see a King of Fighters EX with the Fighting Layer cast, or for Arika to do, like, a KOF Maximum Impact 3 for SNK? Arika are in that same boat with 8ing/Eighting; it's crazy that publishers aren't knocking down their door asking them to make AA fighting games _all the time._

Was just playing this game today before I saw this post. Awesome game and the tournament highlights showed me some cool tech
one of my favorite details in the EX series is that characters actually retain their stance on each side of the screen and are not just sprite flips like pretty much every other fighting game. Almost every fighting game character goes southpaw on the 2P side. what other games are like EX in this respect?
Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive are two games i know of that retain open/closed foot positioning. I'd also imagine some other older 3D fighters that are not from Namco do did this as well.
@@rg1medion Gill in SFV is the only 2.5D fighting game character I can think of who has this specific thing.

@@CNRhKXtreme Technically Sagat's EyePatch stopped switching sides since the EX series. I guess you could include that too. Same with the rapid handswap that Claw does when side-switching.

Thrilling Skullomania gameplay had me on the edge of my seat.
I absolutely LOVE FEXL. I’ve loved all of the arika fighters ever since sfex. Hot take: it’s a better fighter than sf5
I really like this game but every time i boot up the game there's no one to play on ranked match 😥. I've waited multiple times for 1/2 an hour but no luck.

My girlfriend and I played this game for a few hours the other day. I was so surprised at how much fun it was. It’s like Street fighter but with tekken 2 jumps

If only this game got more recognition. It feels so underrated, when comparing to the other fighting games.

For the love of me, I still consider this an unofficial Street Fighter game.
Doesn't help that I spent my college days playing a *LOT* out of EX+a. (And I enjoy the Arika originals over the SF ones)
Though I'd like to see a followup that adds in the cast of the ACTUAL Fighting Layer....
The game needs a sequel at this point with more chars, more content and better animations, but that's obviously very complicated for a company of Arika's scale. Tragic.

I’m late but you know who I miss as characters from the old Street Fighters? Skullomania and Doctrine Dark. They were freakin dope and I wish they’d revamp them man. EX had great characters and design.

Have you seen the new mvc2? With custom character colors, more characters, a more responsive input, fixed hit boxes, infinite combos for everyone, and don't worry, black heart, the bones girl, and Omega Red are still able to do their specials that guard break, while the guys hold people, but umm.. Storm magneto and sentinel might not be the only team you are professional players use anymore.
Where are the Meteor shits? I love the colorful, outerspace and Shiva effects of their studio.

I wish Fighting EX Layer Another Dash was put on other consoles besides Switch. It's SUCH an improvement fron the first.

Let me tell you this, while I have not played SF6 yet, of all games I've played, Fighting EX Layer is the one I found most difficult and amazing to play, the gougi stuff is hard to learn, but man, the game is so dynamic, I would say is the most challenging fighting game of this time.
The game was made with a pure hardcore 90s mindset, the same from the old Arika games. And it's very clear for any old school player that this developer mindset is dieing in the fg world. Like the only big classic fg brand that still feel a lot like an old game is KOF, and even so it's been slowly changing since KOF 13, even started to get forced autocombos in KOF 14. So FEXL is like the only remaining 2d fg that keeps a pure old school fg direction.
(Btw i mean not any "old good vs new bad" judgements, just pointing out facts about each kind of game)
@@carlosaugusto9821 I actually agree with you, every word, the only new game that I like to watch (I don't play anymore, I just run it, give it a go for 10 minutes and stop, but I still love to watch) is KoF XV, it's either that, or old games, so I understand what you're saying, but I never thought of FEXL like this, and I do agree with it, even though that Gougi thing makes it feels weird sometimes, I don't have a problem with it, it's just that, for someone that barely plays it, mastering it would take too much time, but you can see how it affects that gameplay, that chip normals are scary AF.
It a terrible shame that Fighting Layer doesn't get more love.

If you are not familiar, in Japan you can find even Art of Fighting and Street Fighter the Movie offline tournaments. It's truly a country built different for fighting games. I say an unfamiliar person really can't bring to imagine how fighting game culture is there compared to other countries.

Looking at the current state of FEXL and Arika's future i started thinking if it isn't a better that Capcom just buy Arika. So they can make new games with actual budget. Though Capcom's current fg policy hasn't been good with anything outside SF, but for Arika, a company in total poverty, anything from Capcom will be better than their current situation.

Fighting Layer (the original arcade game not this one) is one of the most stylish fighting games I've ever played. I mained Allen Snider then, I still main him in this game. "FiYAHHBOWL!"
Arika was very inspired in the 90s, from the game design to music and to character creation. And actually it's worth point out that SF EX looked and played better than the 3d fighting games that Capcom alone was making in the same period like Star Gladiator and Rival Schools. But well, after all the Arika games were made by the SF2 main devs.
Don't worry! There's no street fighter characters in it so it's not street fighter it's street fighter ex, the sequel to ex, ex2 , but sorry. The input isn't delayed to do long automatic combos like street fighter 4,5, marvel vs Capcom 3, and all the games to stop people with faster hands that are just button mashers that can't even play on a joy stick. But, I mean that's good! Because umm. Well, no one can beat Sonic Fox, he's the best, I knew that when I noticed Lewis Gustafson comment on a mvc 3 game that looked like tatsunoko vs Capcom, and let him is the computer at Larkinn, and put the game on a CD, and play it there. I hope it wasn't my balrog, rock, and Vega that ruined fighting games into obvious string combos! No one can beat Sonic Fox anyways, he's literally probably the first person to know how the games were altered, that's why I never played him, to damn impressive watching him play with other people!
at 8:51 he went from .8 of a single bar total ....to 3 bars of super....and didnt even hit you with the ability that granted all of that super meter.......why?
I liked this game's gameplay but had to refund it. Shocking lack of customization for a modern fighter. 7 of 10 rounds ended in time over, and then I discovered you can't change the timer. Great video, tho. Jwong got me considering rebuying the thing. lol

This is such a nice game. But completely dead. Steam always puts it at 2-3 players. The ps4 version is emptier than a bottle of water in the Sahara. Proof that rollback can’t save a game. Not even Terry Bogard kept a player base active. So sad.
Pd: whoever is thumbing me down because I took a shoot at your precious rollback, prove me wrong and go populate Ex Layer. I shouldn’t have to wait 3 hours for a match, with a game that has “rollback”
Sad that Arika don't have budget to update the animations and add more content in general. I don't mean things like cinematic story modes, just minimum 2000s fg basic content standards (that the game barely reaches).
So their fate is being left behind with a promising but low standard product that's around or even below average indie level. And it's a situation that looks hard to overcome. And the new fg generation "meta", that's focusing on content and presentation, is going to bury this game even deeper in the next few years.
Maybe Arika should be bought by Capcom at this point to save the memory of those good characters. Kinda like KOF saved the memory of characters of dead SNK franchises, and Smash Bros the same for less popular or dead Nintendo franchises.

I haven't played this for a while. I was hoping it would get some characters from Fighting Layer, maybe if they make a sequel they might add some.
The SFEX series as a whole is extremely underrated...they have a lot of characters that I wish would make the jump to the new SF games, like V. Rosso (my boy), Darun, Sharon, etc
Won't happen unless there's an actual collab deal with Arika, as its their characters. But i wish it happened so bad. Plus imo the SF devs have been missing the mark with new chars more often than in the 90s, so using one or two of these masterpieces by Arika would be great. The problem is that apparently Capcom isn't open to guests, different from other companies.
The constant dashing and ps1 level animations remind me of nrs games lol
