This interview explains so much! I met Stephin Merritt years ago, and he was definitely not warm an fuzzy. I thought that he was playing some sort of character, or just having a bad day. Now I realize that every day on tour for him is a bad day and he just didn't want to talk to me. I'm happy that he is able to admit that, and I hope someday to be so blunt about that kind of thing.
Live music beats rockpaperscissors. It's tough that Merritt has psy. problems, he honestly is what he is. Their last visit to our city drew a small crowd and one wonder's if that was more bearable or disappointment added to his anxiety . Seeing the musicians play the instruments, the mechanical/electronics involved, has always been a large part of the joy in going out to hear live music. Looking forward to the next torture session , feed your head. Thanks to all the M.A. Buy their music. They are all wonderful . Maybe interview the other members ?!
Did that happen? But Merritt gets more alive in interviews as soon as he realizes he's facing a music connoisseur. He himself was once a thorough music journalist and really knows his stuff, so he's a bit pissed that people interviewing him generally don't know pop music history well or are just into the general entertainment news. He/She handled him well.
I love Merritt's music, but I disagree that other musicians are as disdainful of performing live as he is. Springsteen admitted he only felt alive when he was onstage and eventually had to deal with how screwed up he was when he WASN'T on tour. And my friend Natalie Gordon of Agent Ribbons and Tele Novella fame really comes alive when she's in front of an audience. Just saw her perform in Sacramento, and she was thrilled to be back in her hometown to see old friends. (I bought her t-shirt.)
It's not really awesome, it's just who that person is. I wouldn't say it's awesome that I'm a man, or that someone else is a woman. It's not a fashion statement, it's an identity.
This honestly cracked me up. every interview I see of him he's just like "hey thanks for having me I fucking hate it here"
I've listened to them almost every day for the past 10 years
damn, stephin really looks like they just found him walking on the street and asked him to do an interview!

That last "I Appriciate it man!" really made my day! I felt like a random act of kindness and empathy. :)

God, he's amazing.

The truth here is refreshing.
Nardwuar vs. Stephin Merritt
Yo. We need that badly.
I wonder if Nardwuar would be able to crack him up. Seems like he's hard to impress
A musical genius

yes...Stephin...we have no idea as you say....so, there is the music to fill the ....GAP........
I just was surprised to hear him say that. 100% 'passable' Cheers, friend!
He is cool but I would fear him
fooled me, until he said it!
Oh man, Stephin clearly doesn't like interviews either.
No it doesn't exist but I'd love to see the dynamic between the two.
