      @@TKCL You might want to consider putting a spare surge protector in the storm shelter just in case you do get a surge and it fries the surge protector hooked up to the power grid, that way you will still have a working one you can plug into your portable power supply to run multiple items if need be.

  • @ShaneZettelmier
    @ShaneZettelmier 3 роки тому

    Nice!!! You should find a heavy spring for that chain on the storm cellar door. If the wind catches that door and swings it out it will probably snap either the chain or the pole it’s on, if you put a heavy spring on there it cushions the initial blow of the door slamming open. It will make that chain and the ability to hold that door about three times stronger.
    Lol. I hope if you get stuck out there for a long time that there’s something on better than Jerry Springer. 😂😂

    I try not to comment on vids much because I don’t want to add to your workload now that your channel is so much larger. But I have to say, that shelter is bad ass, everything about it.. I am going to look into a company that might can build something like that in my area. I don’t want a buried container or anything like that. An attractive “shed type” structure is exactly what I want. Anyhow great job, really enjoyed the build series.

    I've worked in construction all my life. You have built a very fine storm shelter that required a lot of work and material. Knowing that tornados can throw around railroad cars and easily throw a pickup truck I still think you will be fine in that shelter, IF you are in it when the storm hits. It would be much better if the door in your shelter opened into your house. Sometimes storms blow up quickly with very little warning.
    You are a very hard working person. The next time you get a little caught up, get your tractor and dig a hole at least 12 feet square and about four feet deep right against your house in a slightly out of the way area. Pour a slab of concrete in the bottom 1 foot thick with rebar extending up the sides. Buy or build a solid steel door and install it with concrete anchors sticking out of the sides. Hire concrete wall formers to pour concrete walls 12 inches thick on all four sides. You can use your tractor bucket to fill the walls with concrete to save you money. You can form up the top yourself and pour 12 inches of concrete up there with a slope away from the house.
    Now you have a storm proof, fire proof, criminal proof, safe room, fallout shelter attached to your house. You can store your valuables like family pictures, keepsakes and guns without ever having to worry about them burning up in a fire because your house could burn to the ground and everything inside that room would be safe. If you insulate the outside from the sun you can also keep vegetables in there. It can act as a safe room for your family if something happens while you are gone. Most importantly it is very close to where you sleep and live, seconds matter in a disaster. Great videos!

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 роки тому

      Thank you very much for watching I appreciate your comments and feedback. The reason I built the shelter was because I had leftover storm damage materials, that really helped with cost. This is also Florida, are most common tornadoes ef 0s and EF 1s. The big tornadoes simply do not exist here, or I would have a much more substantial shelter. A lot of people ask why I don't dig down here for a shelter, again with this being Florida, our water table is extremely high and the ground is saturated. Thanks for watching

    One thing that you might want to do is have your shelter register with your county in case something happens with a storm we do this in our county in west Tenn our local 911 and emergency management being on the fire dept full time when we have storms they will check on you or send someone to check on you.

    Minor point. The flashing over the door is installed incorrectly, the top of it should be underneath the siding so water cannot get behind it. I think I saw you run a bead of caulk behind it as a make do, maybe that is the best you can do.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 роки тому

      Yes I agree, but this was a after thought to direct water away. I ran two separate beads of caulk behind it. I think it should do a good job of keeping water away from the door seal. I've never had it leak, so this was a extra precaution.

The suggestion you never know if something might kill your camera etc put a fisheye peep hole in the door so you can always manually look out. And my question all the sealing that you did for the roof ridge but at the end above your camera the Gable end is wide open at the top won't blowing rain go straight in there???

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 роки тому +1

      It's got quite a overhang on the end, I've yet to see any rain make it in there. The plan is to seal that up anyway. I'll check into a robust peep hole.

    Watched about 70% of ur playlist on this... only issue i see is if a tornado throws a tractor on top of it... should stop most projectiles. But a tractor/car will crush that, or damage and may cause harm.

      Then no concern, this is Florida. Our most common tornado in my area is ef0 and ef1s. We just don't get those Midwest freak storms that can toss trucks and tractors. Even our big hurricanes lack the power to do so.

    Question, Are the ants that you have in the garden fire ants? If they are put another colony on top of it they will fight each other and kill themselves off. It’s worth the try if they are, I heard it works. It just takes a couple of days

    I thought storm shelters were mostly underground

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 роки тому +1

      Not in Florida, very high water table. No basements or anything underground, it would flood.

    I've had stitches in 8 of my 10 fingers, some of them twice. Probably 90% of them were from sheet metal and metal boxes. Blood makes wire pull real nice. I'm not calling this construction advise.

      Already have some, but not knowing when the next hurricane could hit (could be years) we will carry most of that out there before the storm.

    Any first aid kits you get, open them up and go through the contents. I bought an emergency kit and when it came time to use it, I was extremely disappointed at the quality and could have made my own with name brand quality supplies. I'm talking band-aids that wouldn't peal open, scissors that wouldn't cut, alcohol swabs that were dry, gauze that just disintegrated, and rain ponchos that were so cheep they ripped to shreds.
    I'd go buy an EMT a beer, pick their brain, and load up a pelican case with their suggestions. So many terrible companies just robbing people who want to protect their friends and family.
    I should have saved the contents and made a video about what happened, it went from I can solve this problem and get proper treatment in the morning, to rushing to a hospital because none of this is robust enough to patch a wound and stop bleeding.
