Just what I needed today. 31 years old and trying to get sub 5 in the mile after taking 6 years off from running. I've been doing the short and fast stuff like you said you did in high school... I think I'll rethink that and up my milage. Thanks!
Really excellent video. I am in college and just ran a 4:26 i was dissatisfied with. I think i eased up in the third lap like you said. Solid training talk.
Sage you have a real talent for speaking. Maybe someday you might want to get into media. Podcasts are pretty great, too. Thanks for all the helpful info!
RossKempOnYourMum01 keep in mind, Oregon is a place where the best runners are born 😂 it’s crazy, a 5 flat mile will let you place top 5 in state where I’m at
Sage - great advice for those young runners out there. All ...Pay attention when he gives the “formula” for a fast mile. Also “sage” advice on how to run that mile PR! Long slow distance in the off season and crush the hard workouts during the season. If you’re coach is worth his/her salt you’ll do one high intensity and one moderate intensity per week during the season. Important thing is to manage the intensity!
Thank you I have a freshman daughter that’s got some potential her 3200m is at 12 minutes and that was last year 8th grade. I’m researching how to make her stronger in this event. It’s her best one. Thanks for the tips! Gr8 channel bro
Wow! 12mins in 8th grade is amazing! I’ve been training hard and am only at 11:27 as a junior, make sure she keeps training! Not over train, but enough to get a good mileage base
I did the exact same thing. I remember doing these super hard, super tough workouts, puking, dizzy, gasping for air.. but very little improvement. We were running these intervals as paces so insanely fast, so much faster than anything we could hold for a race.
Bill Beerstein I'm currently a 7th grader running a 5:27 mile and a 12:05.4 in the 2 mile, my goal for next year is to break 5:02.8 (league qualifying) and 11:30 in the 2 mile
Hi sage! I am a sophomore in a high school with a VERY good history from the 60s to the early 80s of winning or being close to states (in New Jersey), but the school fell off in the late 80s to 90s. A new coach came in in 98, and we are a pretty good team again(still our coach today). He's getting old however, and there were rumors that he might retire in the coming couple years. This year, however, in the winter track season, a new young coach came in and took over most of training distance. I didn't do winter track, only spring and xc, but I heard from the runners who did do it that he was really good. I come into the spring track season, and his coaching style was TOTALLY different than the older coach's. The new coach gives us runs based on time instead of miles, and has us do faster, more intense workouts rather than having a lot of milage throughout the week. I have a friend who went from 4:30 to 4:22 in the 1600, another who went from 2:07 to 2:00 in the 800, and another that...
This is pretty funny because my goal this season is actually to run sub 4:40, my PR from last year is 4:44 in the 1600, so I think this video will definitely help, and like the other people said it would be great if you did one on racing the 3200 (maybe running sub 10:00 or something like that), keep up the great content
SAGE! I have probably watched this video 7 or 8 times through out my track career for high school simply because it is the best video/channel I believe that is on UA-cam that is meant for running. I can’t thank you enough for this somewhat form of coaching. My freshman year my fastest 1600m was 5:36 (slow) and coming up on my senior season I currently have a PR of 4:31( not as slow). Again THANK YOU so much for your channel and your knowledge on this fantastic sport. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for THIS video coming up on my suggested.
Dont feel pathetic! And dont compare yourself to others it's discouraging.... but just slowly bring your miles up in the offseason and let your coach take care of the speedwork
Hey thanks this helped a lot, ive been focusing on interval training too much, and ive been struggling getting into distance again after xc. So this helped steer my mind away from brutal punishment, thanks again :)
It's actually cool how you said your 8th grade year went, because it was very similar for me. I trained very hard for soccer and was in great shape, lots of top end speed, but I never had much mileage at all. Somehow I went for spring track because kids told me I was fast, and ended up going 5:15 for the mile off of 20 minute runs and some 800 repeats at which I had no specified pace. I'm now a sophomore (15) and have started serious training with a coach this past winter and hope to break 4:40 this spring. Not phenomenal, but I do love the sport and what it offers mentally and physically, and feel like I really can take it somewhere with heart and discipline. Mileage really has been the answer for me, though!
This video I agree with. Some of his other videos are highly emotional and he uses terminology that could confuse or excite someone into doing too much too soon. In addition I think he misses the value of doing speed development. 6 X 50, etc. Bounding, short uphills. Ryan Hall, 2:04 marathoner did ONE speed development workout every week from high school throughout his professional career. In addition as many young people do, he reads through his own autobiography. We have different gifts. We should not talk to everyone the same way.
Hi Sage,Can you do a treadmill running tips video.Do you like the treadmillDoes it improve your running ability. Can you use it to train for the marathon etc. This would really help me out. Thanks for all the videos and tips so far !!!
The concept of running even splits for the fastest time is definitely the reason why my hs track races both jv and varsity are all even splited, and not very tactical at all. Nearly all the jv runners are running for time over place to maximize their likelyhood of being bumped up to varsity. Likewise, the varsity meets consist of multiple heats with no final, so ultimately, the best time wins the meet rather than the guy who out runs everyone else within the heat.
There is something up with your camera, in the last couple videos there is what looks like a dead pixels in the middle of the image. Thought it was my monitor at first, but its definitely part of the video
Quick tip: In my experience, you can calculate your 1500m by using your time in 800m x 2 + maybe 5-10 seconds (edit: it depends if you're a faster or slower runner)
I'm heading into my sophomore year of HS and my mile time is 5:09, my 2 mile is 11:48. What should I do to get my mile time under 5:00?? And how could I get my 2 mile a lot faster?.
Jacob Avelar try doing 200m at 30 seconds 8 times through with some rest in between to get used to running at that speed for the mile. For the 2 mile, try to have your coach tell you splits per lap, do not go out too fast. I got 11:27 (not terribly fast) but I had 5:09 mile too. My coach read each 200 for me to be around 42 to be 11 flat which helped me stay close to that
Hey Sage could you go over some training tips/race strategy for the 3200m?? Thanks Also i'm on my track team that does 15-20 miles a week on the track... Should I consider running AFTER track practice just to get some mileage in ??
+Austin Anthony The 3200m was my specialty in HS. I'd be curious as to what your coach has you do for workouts. Now, that I run in college for D3 school with a coach who formerly coached D1 out west, I know a lot more about the sport thanks to him. If you're doing 15-20 MPW. You need more mileage. Period. End of story. To be a decent 3200m runner, I was at 30-40 MPW and even that wasn't enough for me to go sub 10:30 (which I can do easily bc of my mileage being over 50 per week) Like Sage said though, don't get hurt running too much. 3200m is fun, but you got to be smart with training.
+SoundgardenOnYT Hey thanks for responding! Right now we do time trials for 2 miles (3 miles for me since i 'broke' the 2 mile time requirment' , 2-3 mile critical threshold runs, slow intervals ( 400m at around 90-95 % w/ a 4 minute rest / repeat 8 times... And going back to my original question: Should I run after practice just to get my milage up? I ran over the summer training for cross country and put up an average of around 35-40 mpw.. With that being said would you recommend running some very aerobic runs after practice? Thanks in advance man.
Austin Anthony The 8x400m workout is a good one (good on your coach for that) If your distance coach doesn't let you go out for easy days, I'd go out after and do it (make sure you have Hi-Vis/reflective gear) I train with a set schedule in a general sense, a lot of the technicalities (race week, pre-meet, etc.) determine how far I go for recovery. It doesn't really matter how you get stuff done, just get it done. With that said, you can add aerobic runs once a week since that helps vo2max. You want those to be 'just right' in terms of hard and easy. make sure it's a solid pace you can handle.
Austin Anthony Anytime man! Feel free to contact me with any other questions you got! I ran all the distances from 800m-3200m in HS (800m not well, but know generally how to get out in the 800m)
Hey Sage great video I currently run a 4:19 for my jr year of hs ran a 4:31 my soph year and was wondering what some tips are to get down to around 4:10-12? THANKS!!
I hate training the longer distances in the off season, because when I get back to track,I feel so slow and my times on intervals feels fast but they're slow af
hey Sage, i know in this video you talked about having the ability to maximize your 100m speed through endurance training. How long does it take to be able to feel the full effects of the endurance training?
Hi, Sage. I've been running without a goal for 4 years now, but at the beginning of this year I decided that I would run a half marathon. Training was going really well until (dun, dun, dunnnn) I got a cold! My muscles were sore, I couldn't breath, and I missed a few workouts. When I did get back, my first run was hellish. I don't even want to try for a workout... What's the protocol for interrupting training when you're sick? Do you start right back into your mileage? Work back up? Thanks in advance!
+James Puntillo Follow a training build up plan for the specific distance you are pointing to. There are a ton of them out there. Should you get sick or injured and the plan is interrupted, pick the plan up where you left off. Depending on where and how severe the downtime is you might pick a similar event further out. My rule of thumb for colds.. if it is a head cold I continue to train but back the efforts off a bit...if it gets into the lungs... I take time off from running and either swim, lift or take some mat classes. training sick is counter productive....Stay with the plan....and train smart!
How hard is it to go from 4:50 to 4:40? I'm a freshman in high school. My 1600 pr is 4:53 which I ran 2 weeks ago and I was supposed to go for the freshman record yesterday (4:49) but I ran too hard on a recovery day and my knee got swollen so I couldn't run in the meet. Spring break just started today and my knee is getting better so I'm thinking I'm gonna be able to run on Monday (the day after tomorrow/April 4). My next meet is April 14. Is it possible for me to get down to 4:40 by then? What about 4:45? I feel like I have a lot of potential and I'm not even close to peaking because this is my first season ever of doing a running sport.
I haven't ever run on a track team or had formal training, but I'm planning to join a team next year (junior year of hs). I'm trying to break 5 min in the mile during the summer. Right now in December, my mile time is about 5:20 (haven't timed in a while). Do you think I can do it with consistent training?
I’m so sad, it’s my senior year and I’m injured right before the track season. My pr is 5:11 and I feel like it could be sooo much better but I’m freaking injured for the first time in 3 years
I keep trying to increase my milage because I’m going up from the 800 to the mile but I keep getting Injured. I can totally second this all of track season I was doing 400 repeats 800 and those repeats and was dying and running all out all season and now I’ve been trying to build milage but I only am hitting 30 milage a week and I’ve noticed I can run faster on longer runs up to 6-9 miles. But my problem is I can’t get 40-50 miles a week without getting injured any advice?
thanx for the vid, Same thing happened to me, fast drills did nothing for me when I were younger, just got slower at 1500 meters too, I don't understand how the legend of Steve Pre-Fontaine is real?, the dude must have been super talented or lying about his age and the true facts of his college years?, yet he preached that he was not talented lol.........maybe Nike created the myth to sell trainers, coz Pre-Fontaine is the original Nike poster guy lol
My current PR from this summer is 5:54 for the mile.Last spring I ran 2:39 for the 800m and 6:19 for the mile , for my first season of track. I actually did 6:11 in 7th grade lol (faster). I did Cross Country for the first time this year. After training 30-40mpw in the summer and ran 19:46 in the 5k. I am going to run 50 miles per week this winter to hit my goal for the spring. I need to run 4:56 for the mile or 10:52 in the 2 mile to qualify for states in my division.
I haven't watched all the videos, but surprised these training talks ONLY talk about running and not about training specific muscle by muscle, even the arms and shoulders, lifting knees, throw heel up...getting stronger without the need to run miles and miles, dammaging joints. Maybe it's not so hard to find where your fatigue starts and just train those muscles for a while, giving a rest to the already stronger parts of your body?
Derek Cech you should def break that! I was at 5:02 freshman and now sophomore im at 4:37 so im hoping to get that 4:25 and you should def be able to do that by senior!! best of luck :) (not trying to brag at all with my time its not even that great just trying to give yoh a permaeter)
I have a 5:32 mile but I feel like because of how tall I am I can't run much faster than a 5:00.(I'm 5:4ft tall)And also does having a lot of calf muscle slow you down?
Kobey Joe the way I was able to train for my fastest mile was by doing mile repeats, you do 1 mile at about 90% of your maximum effort then you take a five minute break. You repeat this 3-6 times
@@brianfrias726 I have no free time whatsoever. I wake up at 5:30 each morning to run 4 miles before school. Then go to school and have practice, where I usually get in like 11. Then I often have band rehearsal 6-8, and then do homework for the rest of the night. It was extremely tough juggling AP classes, with band and running, but I got through 4 years. It was absolute hell though. I would not do it over. I only learned to have a social life my senior year when I finally loosened up a bit about practicing my instrument and grades. If you're not in highschool yet, don't try to do too many things, you're just going to drain yourself out and it won't be enjoyable.
+Jake Lucky It's exactly the same just different split times. 75 second laps for the mile, so 68 to 70 laps for the half mile and 62 to 64 second for the quarter mile. The base building would be the same
Just what I needed today. 31 years old and trying to get sub 5 in the mile after taking 6 years off from running. I've been doing the short and fast stuff like you said you did in high school... I think I'll rethink that and up my milage. Thanks!
You should do a video on weight training and core training for long distance runners vs middle distance runners
Really excellent video. I am in college and just ran a 4:26 i was dissatisfied with. I think i eased up in the third lap like you said. Solid training talk.
What did you do for training for it ? Or what workouts should I do in the week can you help me out
Sage you have a real talent for speaking. Maybe someday you might want to get into media. Podcasts are pretty great, too. Thanks for all the helpful info!
Would love to see a video on what u do for a warmup before a (800/1600)
Asian Sensation jog a 800m. , stretch, and do strides.
1 to 1.5 miles, strides, drills, stretch, music
Drink baking soda to buffer the lactic acid. Sorry Sage!
Hi
Soon as the Jack Daniels book finally clicked with me it revolutionised my training, amazing book!
+spinswimscream Galloway also!
You say you're not speedy yet you ran a 04:30 1500m at 14... What the hell qualifies as speedy around here.
RossKempOnYourMum01 keep in mind, Oregon is a place where the best runners are born 😂 it’s crazy, a 5 flat mile will let you place top 5 in state where I’m at
Mason Watson What? What state are you in. I'm in Illinois, and my sophomore friend running a 4:31 didn't get him to state or even close.
I got a 4:12 my jr year and nearly died
Mason Watson in my school state is 4:45 or less, maybe at regular track meets 5 flat will get you top five
At our junior high state meet 5 kids went sub 4:40 in the mile

Hey Sage could you go over some training tips/race strategy for the 3200m?? Thanks
lean forward with your chest and let your legs catch up to you
But don't put ur shoulders in
+jakob sayers actually, your shoulders move your arms... so your shoulders should sway back and forth while staying relaxed
Trying to run a 1.5 mile in 10:34 at 5'8" 210 lbs. A real runner's body I know. Currently at 11:26. 7:22 mile.
Keep it up man, nothing good comes easy but if you stay consistent you're gonna get there!
How's it going man? My 1.5 mile is currently 10:10 and I'm trying to get faster
Bill Beerstein I'm currently a 7th grader running a 5:27 mile and a 12:05.4 in the 2 mile, my goal for next year is to break 5:02.8 (league qualifying) and 11:30 in the 2 mile
I haven't even run a 2 mile in two years, but my best 2 mile split in a 5k was 10:30.
Dennis Simmons dang I’m 3 and I ran a 3:16 2.3.4 mile race

good info sage I would like to hear more about overcoming the WALL n how to break past it I'm always cramping around 15 to 20 miles
I went from running 50 miles a week on my off season to 15 miles a week in track. And the workouts are so painfull lol.
Same
How did you end up doing
What if I don't want to train in the offseason? Just kidding!
blah ha ha . . .
Yes
Unless
Ahhh... the 1000m repeats, those are my favorite. But 800m repeats are a close 2nd.

Sage do you recommend having caffeine before a long run of 10+ miles? Is it safe? Does it really help your endurance a lot?
Sage, could you make a video about the college recruitment process and how you ended up running at Cornell?
Great discussion and insights. Thanks!
Are you willing to put together a 10 - 12 week 1600m training plan for purchase? Thanks!
My coach read each 200 for me to be around 42 to be 11 flat which helped me stay close to that
*These times were indoor times which is why I say 200m*
Last year track I ran 2:04 800, 10:16 3200, but only a 4:47 1600.. Me and my coaches were very confused by this 😂
Lol..Sage! I remember you topping out at 56 per quarter at NHS! Hope you're well, buddy.

Very helpful and a lot more interesting video this time. Thanks!
Last year I was a sophomore and I started my track season with a 5:58 and finished with a 5:23
Develop Tv for winter I started at 5:55 finished at 5:20 first season
Can you please do a video on how to run a sub 9minute 1.5mile? Or is it basically the same as the tips in this video?
My splits are mad weird for 1600 I ran a 80,83,86 and then a 76
Nice vids man I’m 12 I live in NZ and can do a 4:45 1500m in early season. Is that good
One of your better videos
I don't know if this is too similar, but you should do a video on training for a sub 9:30 2 mile (or maybe sub 9 3k) specifically for high schoolers.
what school/league did you go to in high school?
I hate training the longer distances in the off season, because when I get back to track,I feel so slow and my times on intervals feels fast but they're slow af
hey Sage, i know in this video you talked about having the ability to maximize your 100m speed through endurance training. How long does it take to be able to feel the full effects of the endurance training?
Please upload a video on how to run uphill..i have a 10m coming up in san francisco golden gate bridge that has lots of uphills ,
+hayderimran7 He's made a video about that before Im pretty sure, check through the old videos
Will you do one for middle school/junior high kids
Sage could you talk about age limits for long distance races
How much can your improve you high school career? Right now my PR in the mile is 530 but by my senior year I really want to run a 420
Angel Luque what did you get in senior year????
Sage, for longer races (ultras), speed training early....or speed training late....I've read different suggestions during periodization.......
could you go over weight lifting during the off season. what are certain limits to leg lifting?
My pr last season was a 448 im a junior in hs, hoping to bring it down a lot this upcoming season ^_^
okay
How’d it go
This guy is a god
I run an 800m consistently under 2:08 , yet I can't break 4:50 in mile. I will take your advice into account now lol
Ur endurance
Wow! 800m is the hardest event to me (I even did steeplechase) that’s impressive
thanx for the vid, Same thing happened to me, fast drills did nothing for me when I were younger, just got slower at 1500 meters too, I don't understand how the legend of Steve Pre-Fontaine is real?, the dude must have been super talented or lying about his age and the true facts of his college years?, yet he preached that he was not talented lol.........maybe Nike created the myth to sell trainers, coz Pre-Fontaine is the original Nike poster guy lol
Doctor Slappy your goals was my track season times in my 9th grade year and I couldn't get past the first round let alone state lol ...fml... 😞😞
Keep trying to improve! I plan to run well into my old age and hope to keep improving as I age. I have only started running since this spring.
Btw. I like the doge pic. Lol I started running again too hopefully I can improve.
Andrew Arredondo Thanks and good luck!
You too bro
Tried to break 5 last year in the 1500m ended up with a 5:01
I ran 52 for 400, 2:02 for 800, 4:52 for 1600m all off just speed workouts, that affected me in 2miles up races tho
Who else was trying to wipe off that dot in the middle of the screen lmao
Got first unlike sage in the 1500 meter race haha :D
nice vid good info...
I'm running 4:45 as a sophomore for the 1600. Will I able to break 4:30 by the end of senior year? I ran 6:11 for my first mile in freshman year
Derek Cech you should def break that! I was at 5:02 freshman and now sophomore im at 4:37 so im hoping to get that 4:25 and you should def be able to do that by senior!! best of luck :) (not trying to brag at all with my time its not even that great just trying to give yoh a permaeter)
Thought it said a sub 4:40 marathon I was gonna say walk
But it doesn't so I'm wrong
how can I get my 1500m pr from 4:55 to 4:20 in 1500m
Hit a 4:44 today, going for that sub 4:40
can you givr a whole week program for 1600 m
Do you think that 50 miles a week would be too much? or is it the more the better?
It depends on age, skill, and experience
^^^^^^^^^^
Do some videos of u racing
man i wish you were my coach
What!? He just said that 1500 meters is a mile. 1609 meters are in a mile so 1600 meters is much closer.
Running is fun. Ha ha.
winning is fun
Caleb Aikens running is winning
1:10 isn’t it the other way around?
This guy, my best is only 4:44
4:00 mile
4 second rule
Means you need 400 in 42?
I am pretty sure thats not true.
MrSergecj you need to run a 400 in 52
i run a 4:45 ... trying to get 4:30 to be competitive for CIF
1600 meter!!
I have a 5:32 mile but I feel like because of how tall I am I can't run much faster than a 5:00.(I'm 5:4ft tall)And also does having a lot of calf muscle slow you down?
that's not tall!!!
+Steven Cox that's the point. Since I'm short I was wondering if that affected my potential. I didn't mean to say that I was tall lol.
+dragonball Chavez (geo) By affecting your potential, do you mean stunt your growth?
+Steven Cox yeah.
+Steven Cox yeah
Is there a shoe that you can run trail and road?
the Montrail Fluidflex can do both.
thanks a bunch!
1609.344 Exactly
does anyone have any tips for me to just get below 5:30....i know it sounds slow but im in like 5:30's to 40's
+Kobey Joe everything in the video applies just scale the splits/times to slower numbers
Kobey Joe the way I was able to train for my fastest mile was by doing mile repeats, you do 1 mile at about 90% of your maximum effort then you take a five minute break. You repeat this 3-6 times
What!? You only ran 20-30 miles as a high schooler? How? As a sophomore, the coach makes me run 70.
ur coach dumb?!
@@andrewbennett8283 Nope, 2 years later im in the 90s building up to 100 for track.
@@austinmolitor7283 how the heck do U find time to do that ?
@@brianfrias726 I have no free time whatsoever. I wake up at 5:30 each morning to run 4 miles before school. Then go to school and have practice, where I usually get in like 11. Then I often have band rehearsal 6-8, and then do homework for the rest of the night. It was extremely tough juggling AP classes, with band and running, but I got through 4 years. It was absolute hell though. I would not do it over. I only learned to have a social life my senior year when I finally loosened up a bit about practicing my instrument and grades. If you're not in highschool yet, don't try to do too many things, you're just going to drain yourself out and it won't be enjoyable.
please give me 1500m schedule
Same
400 = 6 time
Repetitions
da fuq.. in 8th grade I ran 4:59 and I worked my ass off 6 days a week, and had formal training 😂😂
eh.. thats decent
george atanasov but you're in 8th grade so that's really good
I'm 7 and I ran a 2:47 mile
I'm Osama Bin Laden and ran a 9:11 mile
cartercos foodreviews you forgot the 2 in front .
Andrew Arredondo actually I've ran a 4:32 in grade 8
cartercos foodreviews that's good bro. Ever think about going to the olympics? You should train for it.

K?
What's ur week workout plan
Would've loved to see how to train for a sub 5 but I'll just set my goal a little higher!
+Jake Lucky ha same here
+Jake Lucky It's exactly the same just different split times. 75 second laps for the mile, so 68 to 70 laps for the half mile and 62 to 64 second for the quarter mile. The base building would be the same
but a 1500 isint a mile...
***** that 100 meters is a big difference
Swagenseller for comparing times yes, but not in the context of applying the information from this video
