hey man in all honesty, YOUR VIDEOS ON COLOR MIXING ARE THE GREATEST ON THE INTERNET AND ANY OF MY TEACHERS. You should be extremely proud of yourself for these videos! :D
Thank you for all your efforts to teach others the joy of being able to paint realism! I’ve learned SO much from your videos and rewatch them regularly to remind me of the importance of the basics.
I'm a watercolorist.first and foremost. However I'm trying my hand at oils and acrylics.. My lucky day to find your site.. How good is this??? Thank you so much ...I appreciate not only the videos, but the way you present them. I feel like i'm in a classroom with you..
It makes me sad that I've learned more in this video than what I ever did in high school studying art. My teacher wasn't really a teacher. And I'm happy that I found this Chanel. Seen 2 videos so far and I am so inspired to start mixing colors and actually play w oil painting! Thank you!!
Hi Mark! I love your videos and am inspired to paint with your system. Can you explain to me how to know if a step is good? Are you seeing the next tonal shift in the still life and mixing to that level? Or are you simply mixing up a value and then finding it in the still life? I'm wondering, should I simply mix a tonal range from black to white in all my colors? Or are you actually observing all the color and tonal shifts and mixing those before starting? How far is one tonal step from the next? Thank you!
Hi you said that we can get any colour by mixing primary. But when I paint flowers couldn't mix the warm orange with cadmium red and yellow. It seemed dirty colour not fresh. Also magenta colour towards purple is not achieved by mixing red and ultramarine blue. Do I have to buy warm and cool colour seperatly?
Hello, i would like to ask another question. When you buy color set (for beginers like me), it consist 24 tubes of various colors. So when i try to match a color from a pot (for instance) to my pallet, and i find that non of 24 tubes/colors matc, what do i do ? Do I: 1. Find most similar color from tube, and aplay that or 2. Mix my own color using 3 basic colors ? Thank you
Will Hanson do the same process just with bigger quantities.colour theory always is same, even with all type of paints and colours,so don’t fear, just keep trying 😉
Hello, great video! In the first minute of this vid, you mention "color groups tutorial". I have troubble finding it. Can you point me to this tutorial ? Thank you B.
Your video production, the lighting, editing, and whatnot, is just superb. It is some of the best I've seen in a long time. Very interesting content as well. Just felt you should know..
I have to agree. If you are going to paint with the color matching method, Mark has created the ultimate system. Look no further. Mark has a depth of art history knowledge that is second to none. His artwork shows it, too.
Sir you are genius the amount of learning I had through your videos is really treasure for me because this colours always used to make me confused and you simplified it through your this colour mixing videos. Really thank you so much
How can ANYONE not find this the most damn-near idiot proof tutorial ever??? Whats with the 22 dislikes??? Mark I have to say, as a mere amature, this is a great explanation, the most helpfull 30 minutes a beginner could ask for..... Many thanks for sharing.... L. (dont mind the 22........)
The best tutorial I have found on colour mixing including any paid course I’ve attended. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us in these superbly edited free videos. I’ll be buying your Geneva paints. They look fantastic!
I just started getting into oil painting and have been watching a TON of videos. This one, by far, has been the most helpful so far. You are an amazing teacher. I'll try to be a good grasshopper. Thanks a ton!
Wow you really broke this down to be super understandable. I can't explain how much I appreciate this! Who knew it was actually such a "simple" process. It's all about training the mind to know color compliments and the eye to see the color and after that it seems like a breeze. Thanks so much!
My goodness- I have taken numerous oil painting classes from some really great (museum quality) artists. This video has helped me MORE than all the teachers I have had all theses years. THANK YOU from one artist to another!! GREAT HELP and keep 'em coming!!
Thanks for this video, Mark. This is so good. Because you are a master artist, you may realize how good this video is. But I can tell you, it is the most helpful video I've ever seen on painting in oil, wet into wet. Gosh, maybe its THE best instructional video on the internet. Certainly, it's the most important video for beginning artists to watch. I watch other artists videos, and I hear your voice speaking to me from this video, helping me understand what that other artist is trying to say, but is not quite saying. I paint, and I hear you speaking to me. You make it all clear. I know what to do to lighten my values in my step. Two choices. I know what to do to find the tone from my step. Six choices. This makes mixing your tones and values so simple and clear. Doing it from life. Not from a quirky formula. Not from a color chart. FROM LIFE! And maybe the best thing is your seemingly complete lack of ego. You don't want to convince us how much you know. You want to convince us that we, the unwashed masses, CAN do it, if we just get out of our way and trust what you tell us, which is the knowledge of experience. You are a master artist and a master teacher. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. At last I get it.
too funny --- little bits of color all over the palette! I can relate! btw -- what excellent video production you put out for us. the sound, picture, etc blows my mind how impeccable these videos are!! I am wondering if your side job is in that business! what a gift I found you, especially when I was down! I can not wait to get to your website! Do you have workshops or something I can come visit --- I haven't been on vacation for eons and what an excellent excuse to go and visit Austin and your outfit!! where do we get a color checker tool?
Just...WOW. I'm 58 and been painting on and off most of my life. I was NEVER, other than the color wheel, taught EXACTLY HOW to mix colors in school, and as a result, I fought the whole way through the painting, often resisting the urge to destroy it. I can now breathe a HUGE sigh of relief as your technique has made painting a joy rather than hard labor. Thank you Mark :)
+Özgür Kesim The first step, maybe the first two steps from black tend to be smaller, but after that it's pretty uniform. When it doesn't look that way, it's most likely the cameras, which do not have an accurate tone-curve. But in any case it is not critical that your steps are perfect.
I am a high school teacher at Highland Park in Amarillo, Texas and your videos have been a great visual tool for my advanced students to reinforce what I already teach. I just wanted to say thank you!
One of the best things about Mark's videos besides the intellectual content of course - is there is no music and no opening graphics...he just gets to the point....and no joking around either. He's thought of everything.
Thanks, this is a wonderful demonstration. I have watched several times, continue to learn. Your meticulous method really does work, especially because it has trained me approach painting methodically.
Im in my second time watching this. I applied this the best I could to a half done oil painting and I saw such a startling improvement that I am taking the time to apply the whole of the draw mix paint instruction for the next year. I have two oil paintings that I have to finish then I will be taking the time to learn this method in full. I applied only parts to the oil painting and my family even commented on how much better I was painting.
Both white and yellow paint can be used to make the tone lighter. The yellow paint will give a warmer orange colour, the white paint will tned to make the colour more cold by bringing out the blues in the colour. Thats why he has white over near the blue side of the spectrum. it is neutral, but it brings ou the blues already present in the paint.
Brilliant information,. Been painting for 8 yrs and been to a few classes and read a great deal around the subject - but this demo has pulled it all together for me in a short space of time. It also highlights that you don't need loads of different fancy coloured paints in your paint box! Well done and thank you.
6:52 - paint pigments 20:10 - start with a base 25:20 - the shine 28:20- the flavor of the light 31:40 - don't chase all the little colours Podcast is awesome!
This is still one of the best tutorial series I have ever seen. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule this is still a fantastic video series for all skill levels.
What do you mean? I would love to hear an actual exception to anything he has said in this video. Obviously he says you can’t mix certain intense greens or fluorescent traffic cone orange etc. But all his color mixing rules are reliable 100 percent of the time- as long as you are using his pigments and following his method correctly. Any “exceptions” are clearly outlined by him and honestly are almost never encountered.
Can't believe what i was searching for months is all packed in your majority of videos. Big fan of the way you explain and make things simple to learn for people.
That is just about the most practical and instructive demonstration on colour mixing that I have ever seen. The various colours on the silver jug would daunt many and yet with your approach it all becomes perfectly achievable. Thanks for a very useful demo.
why did it take so long for someone to give such AWESOME tutorials. This is amazing. You make it so that ANYONE can do this. I can watch your videos all night.
I have been watching your videos on painting for about three months now, and over that time I have developed a trust for you and your teachings. I have been learning to paint in oils after twenty five years of painting acrylics, and its a whole different beast! Thankyou for your insights and videos!
I have just started to paint oil paintings in the last year, and these videos are extremely helpful. Thanks so much! I have already started to notice a difference in my thinking already. Thanks
Mark, you are the Verrocchio of our time, inspiring us to pick up the brush. I will be buying your paint as soon as I can. I dig how simple and perfectly equipped your online shop is.
I'm so excited about this tutorial! It really illustrates how meticulous and organised one needs to be in order to paint successful realism. Thank you! And I look forward to Geneva paints going international!
An EXCELLENT demo that will be very very helpful to me. Thank you Mark. My one question is how do you decide how many “steps” to take because that will determine how big each step is from one to the next?
keep going this kind of videos can change the art media ...cause classic formation on oil is the BASIC the abc of ART and fine arts just forget it or worst erase it
Thanks for explaining about dangerous colors. I have not much money . We are just middleclass . I never bought artist colors till now. Only used student colors and camel colors. Camel do not make these toxic colors. Now I thought of starting my work. I started searching for artist colors. But many of the companies make toxic colors and then they blame artists for polluting environment and water. So I have been conscious . Thanks for telling which of colors are toxic . And explaning about colors.
I'm a bit confused and I'm not sure if I can explain my confusion in the form of a question. But I'll try. I will give numerical values for tone. The darkest you can create with oil paint is black, I'll give that a 10, and the lightest, white, is a 1... But... the darkest you see in the still life is darker than you can paint. So what you SEE has to be 11. This is where it gets confusing. If, say, you're matching a value 9 dark exactly on the cup. Matched paint value 9 what you see value 9. That mean in as far as you can paint a value, you have only one more step left to create the darkest dark and that is to go to Value 10, but in the still life there are still two values left to value 11. How do you create the value changes if you're always going to be one step behind? I just read this and I can't even make sense of it. I hope you can glean what I mean from it.
Although, in a way this is as boring as watching paint dry (KIDDING!) I am so glad I fought my ADD super hard to watch the entire thing because it is everything.
Amazing video; thank you! Totally agree with all the positive comments below. I am sure you mention it somewhere, but I can't seem to find it: why use a brush to mix instead of a knife? Seems like all that paint would end up in the ferrule.
Hello Mr. Mark, i beleive that it is the fourth times that i learn from this video and every time something new stick out in my learning process. I don t think and understand that you do not answer comments but in case that you read them i will share the following. First i am a novice and from the beginning of learning from your video i did not touch a brush. My comments: i see the the color checker is a very trusty device and you can quickly move it around but for painting from a photo i would have to mark some paint on the protected photo and i could be making a lot of little spot before finding the right value. I will make a color checker that i could put very close to the photo to find the value. Does it make sense. Thank you for sharing so much informations.
Been painting since I was 7. Watercolors and acrylics. Thanks for the tip of painting in oils. Starting was a pain since I would blend on the canvas. Would end up with a dark grey without even touching b/w.
I want to buy your paints that have leveling mixed in already, but my wife can't put out the money.I am an injured vet who is not working and was wondering if you could tell me what inexpensive medium is best to use to get a similar effect. I have painted on and off for awhile but the biggest problem I have is the consistency of the paint. I just don't get it. Love your tutorials!
Thank you so very much. I am a beginner at painting realism , never having learned values . I would love to buy a tutorial on color mixing. Where can I find your tutorials ? Thanks
I purchased your paints set, and my painting has improved.Mine are not as realistic as your finished paintings , more of a looser style which works when viewed from a short distance.thanksMike
Hello I bought 2 DVDs last year. They were absolutely wonderful and you helped me a lot. I have several questions. In your portrait video of your wife you mentioned warm and cool skin tones. Is there any way you can elaborate on these concepts more? 2 I tried doing plein air landscapes and even used an umbrella as you suggested but still my paintings turned out to be too bright. Finally, and I suppose the easiest to answer, why did you decide to give away your secrets on UA-cam? Cheers and Godbless.
Are you making sure to make enough of each step so that you don't have to go back and remake them? It looks like such a tiny amount you are putting on your second palette as you make each step. Maybe since the paint is so thin you don't need very much? So to confirm what I'm seeing, you are making a pool of the darkest value in each color family and then making the steps and moving them to a different palette all before you start? I hope that is correct.
If there was a video I wish I could pool all my likes for a video into, it would be this one. 1000 likes from me, pull all those from every video I watched.
My theory is when you feel the color is just slightly off but can't really tell how it's because you're picking up the tiny little details within the subject like little dark flecks of petina or something like that. Details that are never going to come through as clearly in the painting even if you could paint details that small.
You are a very generous person giving these instructions pills. but the truth and that they are not pills, are you a true own lunch ... thank you so much for your advice .... good job
That colour checker is the business gonna build me one a those and load it up with all sorts of colours my dazed and confused dayz are over :) very helpful indeed thanks alot !
Hi, sir , can please recommend me a good book regarding ground for oil and acrylic paint, with technical support or name of material for ground making ,

Hay man, you are a real master, i am enjoining your tutorials a lot, thank you!
you are a good artist awesome paintings
Amazing tutorial. Thank you
This is amazing. The only thing I don't understand is how is he using so few paint, does it have something to do with the oils or medium's quality?
wonderful the way you can teach, i love it so much couse i can understand very well, thank you fellow, you ve done it.

picking the steps makes a lot of sense now, but how do you replicate the steps in larger quantities? is it just trial and error?
Will Hanson do the same process just with bigger quantities.colour theory always is same, even with all type of paints and colours,so don’t fear, just keep trying 😉
Yes that's right
Hello, why did you mix black paint ? Why dont just use black paint from the stock tube ?
very helpful! thank you.
Where can I find a color checker tool like yours?
very helpfull
Hello, great video!
In the first minute of this vid, you mention "color groups tutorial". I have troubble finding it. Can you point me to this tutorial ? Thank you B.
I don get how can I make sure it's a right step
What medium are you using to thin your paint? Linseed Oil?
Your video production, the lighting, editing, and whatnot, is just superb. It is some of the best I've seen in a long time. Very interesting content as well. Just felt you should know..
I was just thinking the same thing. I love hard light.
Filmmaking is also art🙂…
This is THE BEST color mixing/matching tutorial I have EVER SEEN in YEARS of finding topics on painting.
Really thank you so much
Agreed. Oils are a completely different medium compared to acrylics and water. Even gouache.
How can ANYONE not find this the most damn-near idiot proof tutorial ever??? Whats with the 22 dislikes??? Mark I have to say, as a mere amature, this is a great explanation, the most helpfull 30 minutes a beginner could ask for.....

there are a lot of oil painting tutorials!! soo helpful.. hows your progress with oil paints since?
Watch Paul Foxton's videos on the munsell system. He really helps conceptualise colour in an easy to digest form also.

Are you using the term "step" analogous to the gradations on the 1 to 10 shads on the standard gray scale and value finder?
I was wondering the exact same thing. I "think" that is the case. I was a little confused on that too.
I'm so excited about this tutorial! It really illustrates how meticulous and organised one needs to be in order to paint successful realism. Thank you! And I look forward to Geneva paints going international!
why do we mix in incremental steps rather than cutting the difference? IE black, 80%, 60%, 40% rather than, black, 50%, 75%, 81.25%

How to mix colors how to blend how to choose colors to match your real life object!
Take Care, Bill Kearney :-)
This answers sooo many questions I wanna cry
Been painting since I was 7. Watercolors and acrylics. Thanks for the tip of painting in oils.
Starting was a pain since I would blend on the canvas. Would end up with a dark grey without even touching b/w.
Thanks asadomgame!
Very informative, very practical...
Can you explain what the different from getting the first color directly by adding black with blue n yellow and doing the long process u did? Thanx
The color checker is new to me, and I'm an old guy ! Also, why do you not use a palette knife? I don't usually myself, but most painters seem to.
"You dont really have to be perfect with it"
Me an industrial and commercial paint mixer: *gulps*
You are a very generous person giving these instructions pills. but the truth and that they are not pills, are you a true own lunch ... thank you so much for your advice .... good job
That colour checker is the business gonna build me one a those and load it up with all sorts of colours my dazed and confused dayz are over :) very helpful indeed thanks alot !
Amazing tutorial, helped me immensely. Thanks for sharing and it having a ton on commercials.
I'm guessing by step he means value difference. And good steps have good enough contrast depending on if it's in the light or dark.
My old laptop does not register some of these subtle differences, but it's obvious when you get your paints out, & get going !!
Hi, sir , can please recommend me a good book regarding ground for oil and acrylic paint, with technical support or name of material for ground making ,
Awesome tutorial. I can't help but mention how much I enjoyed the awesome simplicity of the screen that illustrates step one.
This was extremely helpful. thank you
What are you getting the steps from, like how do you know what's too big or too small? what are you basing it off of?
Wow! Am a realistic painter who uses both acrylic and oil paint, however would like to concentrate on oil
