Shopping via smartphone is nothing new. And plenty of people whip out their smartphones to comparison shop in stores, much as the retailers hate it.

When I first heard about this at a Walmart checkout line the other day, I was really excited, because I didn't realize that you still have to wait in the checkout line in order to scan your phone. The Sucky thing about the long lines at Walmart is waiting until it's your turn, not actually scanning your items which takes all of a minute to two minutes max. Unless everybody is using this system so that they're ALL only scanning one phone screen at every check out, this is never going to help anybody. It takes at least twice, maybe 5 times as long to scan all of your items with your phone than it does to use the scanner at the checkout. Sorry I'm just repeating what everyone else said but it's so bad that the point needs to be made again!
There is also a scope of theft...if someone picks the product, doesnt scan and puts in the bag and leave...then what?. There is no physical verification of the item.
Tried it. First, you have to guess how many bags you need. Next the bags are cumbersome to open and fill as you walk shop. You must press 'scan item' each time instead of a continuous scan. It takes forever to find the bar code, hold it steady and let it scan. Getting multiple of the same item takes forever. THEN, I learned the 6 sacks I had scanned were sent to list, not the cart so had to start over. Then, the scan on the pay screen wouldn't work, had to key in a code. Not a great innovation.
In the UK we have scanners that you pick up near the wall at the entrance, we also have dedicated tills for transfer.

Honestly what is stopping you from just scanning one thing and walking out with unscanned merchandise??

Eric, the answer to your question about what is stopping people from walking out with un-scanned merchandise is not much at all ! There will still be dishonest people, so this is a good way for those people to steal, or try to steal. What stops an honest person from doing so, is simply, they are honest people!

I don't see how it saves time. You still have to WAIT IN LINE to use self check. Then you have to pay. Seems like it would be the same as the normal process, honestly. Takes about the same amount of time. And the theft problem will be BIGGER because you cant trust certain people to scan the right thing. Then they bag it so the customer host can't check it! It will make AP's job harder too because the camera's are not sharp enough to see whether or not the person actually scanned the item into their phone. This might be a fun and helpful idea for honest customers. But its a HORRIBLE idea for AP.
Its saving you time if payed by cc or debit and go to register or associate show receipt leave.

This is gonna fail hard until nfc becomes more prevalent. No one is gonna want to take forever "scanning" every item with the slow camera scanning method. With nfc you would just swipe your phone quickly over the item. And sorry iPhone owners, they don't have nfc.
The deal here is that Walmart is trying to do away with the scanning machines in the checkout line by forcing people to carry out that function on their cell phones (thereby wearing out the battery, putting their phones at risk of getting hacked and getting Trojans, dropping their phones on the cement floor and cracking the screen which is a big risk when you are walking around etc). In the end, you still have to wait in the long lines to get out of the store, because there will be even fewer scanning machines and they will be in an even greater state of disrepair. Walmart has absolutely no respect for their customers.

Fuck that. They should let you scan items and just walk out the store! No check out lines at all! It will just display a virtual receipt to show the Walmart employee on the way out. It will just charge your credit card on file.
So now we're working for Wal-Mart, as cashiers. Will Wal-Mart pay us by reducing prices?

Just in case you guys didn't catch it, I think he might of just stole that bag because he never rang the walmart bag up... He just stole 50 cents from Walmart what a bad ass Lol.

You people making complains are truly ridiculous. This would save a load of time.
Then why does it take him so long?
A load of time vs. Waiting in a long line. You could be done with checking out by the time you hit the front of the line. It doesn't take 'a long time' the only reason people think it does is because they actually have to do something (check-out their items while they shop). Oh yeah that's so horrible..
Long line? It still uses self check-out. If there's a line, you're going to still have to wait.
Not that I've ever seen a long line at the self-check out. A couple of people at max if any.
And it would take longer. You have to stop for each item you pick up and wait about five to ten seconds from what it looked like while your crappy iphone tries to scan the image and going thru all the stupid menus. That versus the less than one second it takes to pass it by the store scanner before you put it into a bag.
Instead of using an already fast method of scanning each item, you're using a slow one. I don't see how this could in any way save you time.
