@Bruce F Same here. None of my dogs were purchased. Some were given to us by people whose dog had litters, whilst others adopted us (just appeared on the front drive and stayed ever since). All my departed babies are buried in the garden they enjoyed running around. I love the way you and Captain instantly bonded. Wish there were more people like you so the horror of puppy mills ends.

As a Great Pyrenees owner, they are definitely not an easy dog to handle if you don't know what you are in for. They are bred to be stubborn and loud, but they are as loyal and loving as a dog can come. You just need to understand them and be willing to train yourself to be a good owner for them. My boy Ranger is definitely a lot to handle, but I wouldn't trade him for the world.

We lost our Goliath, 110 lb GP 2 1/2 years ago. He was dumped. I, thinking a small car had parked behind me, got out of my vehicle and the “car” was walking towards me! Of course, after learning he wasn’t microchipped and no tags and he looked old, took him home. Well he was young! Maybe 2. Yes stubborn and yes he barked all night, but it really became music as I knew he was protecting us. Forget leash walking... he just walked us all into a circle and then sat in front of us! But he never ate our chickens and was the sweetest soul! We had him for 12 years!

They are bred to watch over goats and sheep and such. So without that to do they can become very board and restless. I used to have one she was a great dog. I loved her dearly. She not only protected my animals but was fearsly protective of our family. We had 8 acre's and she could run wherever she chose. Even though we were in the country we were still having problems with being broke in to. One night my daughter's boyfriend came in to tell me she was running someone through the horse field. I told him it was ok that she was just doing her job which she loved. But a week later she was gone. We looked everywhere but never found her. It broke my heart. I miss that big sweetheart. I know someone killed her just to get her out of the way. RIP bonnie you're definitely missed.

When Captain’s new human choked when saying that Captain had found a forever home, that really got me . I have 2 rescue dogs that carry a lot of their sad past with them which can make things difficult at times, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. That’s who they are, and I love them so, so, much though I choke up sometimes when I think of the years that they weren’t with me, and all of our lives are happier now that we’ve found each other.

Many blessings to you and your adoptees! Yes, sometimes there are remnants of the past that come up, but reassuring and love bring them back to the present quickly, and they are so happy and grateful for their forever families it happens less and less. We have 7 house rabbits and 2 fosters all rescues, and fostering takes a special kind of love. You love them as your own, but always with the reserve knowing that they will leave you someday. Bless all those who love and care for animals, and especially fosters, because they pour so much love and care into a being that belongs with another. Selfless.

I'm thankful the people who returned him, did so when they realized they couldn't handle him. So many people out there would've just tied him up outside an dlet him live the rest of his life like that. Bringing him back helped him to eventually find his true forever home.

I'm glad we're mentioning this too! On so many videos/posts like this I see people shaming the previous owners who return the dogs instead of accepting that it is okay to realize you can't take care of a specific dog. That dog found the life of his dreams because people were responsible enough to return him!

    • @mindyg7064
      @mindyg7064 4 роки тому +1

I'm glad someone else had this perspective too. As a vet nurse I saw this so much, people who had breeds they had no business keeping and the dog suffering as a result. If it's not a member of your family, be kind enough to set them free again and give someone else a chance to love them...
As a side note, ALWAYS adopt from shelters. In Australia they are overflowing and many good bois & girls are being put to sleep needlessly because their is no room. If you want a dog, there are so many waiting for you who need your help at your local rescue shelter...

When I was about 8 yrs old our new neighbours had a Pyrenees calles Natja.
I would go next door after school and play with her.
One day - not even 2 weeks since starting playing with her, I stepped into a hole - and broke my ankle and could not move.
It qould be abother 2 hours untill the neighbours will be home - or my mum will miss me at the dinner table. (It was in the 1970 ' 😁)
Natja literally stood over me and barked like crazy - a weird high shrieking bark - untill a neighbour further down the road took notice and came to see what was going on.
She growled at the neighbour at first but after speaking nicely to her, she relaxed and allowed him to help me.
She literally was my best friend for the next 6 years, untill she passed from old age.

Our Pyrenees/Lab, Luther, passed away five months ago. He could have been Captain's twin. As far as Captain being returned, I bet it was because he's an escape artist. Keeping a GP fenced in is hard. They are amazing dogs. Good luck, Captain. Rest easy, Luther.

Escape artists, huh? That would explain my niece's puppy. He's part Great Pyrenees (and mini Australian shepherd, fun mix) and had to be kept in a kennel after a medical procedure (I think he had an infection or something) so he wouldn't injure himself. Thing is, he kept climbing the wall and getting into the main part of the barn.
Keeping him in the house wasn't an option because he'd get into the trash cans at night.

In order to give any dog a forever home it's important to be able to understand the dog's personality & characteristics of the breed (s). Despite claims by some that keeping a dog outside is cruel, there are dogs that aren't fond of being inside...some not at all, some only for a short time. Large dogs need room to move around (inside & out). Working dogs require exercise & plenty of it, keeping them occupied keeps them happy & out of mischief. I rescued a GP puppy from the pound several years back. Such a wonderful personality, but at the time we couldn't give her a forever home.....so we took great pains in finding the perfect one just for her. We turned out to be her "foster" instead of forever. GPs are huge, amazingly loving, loyal, intelligent, working dogs.....they need exercise and something to do. Odds are high previous owners didn't quite meet breed requirements for Captain. So glad Capt has gone to his forever home at last. Nice story to wake up to.

We had two Pyrs (one died very suddenly on us, we still have the other) and I honestly watched this hoping these people actually researched the breed, especially since he's not a puppy. Our girls were the first Pyrs that we got (as puppies), and hopefully they're not our last because I absolutely love the breed, but I did *so much research* before getting them. We raised both of ours to "guard" our daughter, so they never had a problem being inside. Our remaining Pyr is zonked out on the floor about five feet from me as I watch this, has a bed, her own chair, likes sneaking up on the couch, and is addicted to red solo cups, but if Captain was left outside most of the time and they haven't given him a specific purpose, I foresee a LOT more shredded dog beds in their future. Plus that fence...yikes. That is not gonna hold him if he makes it to the edge of the property.

I adopted a dog from SPCA 02/2007. He had been there 4 months, had been returned a couple of times for reasons unknown although he was 100% unsocialized. He was between 7-12 months in age, rather malnourised, weighed about 48 pounds, 26" at the withers. Long story short...he died 03/23/2020 but the 13+ years I had him he brought me more joy than anything I've ever had. He ended up at about 73 pounds, we did agility for years (not very good!). I really believe he was one of God's gifts to the world - such a happy animal! Today is the 18 month anniversary of his death and while I miss him greatly, I'm so happy to have seen this wonderful video of Captain getting his forever home. Thank you for posting this!
