Sanwa buttons and joystick are the best in my opinion.

Also, those usb encoders work well on the Super Retro-cade. I couldn't find anyone making an arcade stick that was compatible with that unit, but those are. So that is a good reason to build your own if you're someone who was trying to find one for that particular device.

There is quite a number of these 2 piece acrylic knock offs out there. I bought one from Amazon. I also drilled holes on the side to add pinball "flipper" buttons. For me the only two disappointments are 1) I wish there was more surface below the buttons to rest your palms and 2) as you pointed out, it's a pain to unscrew and take apart to switch between 4 way and 8 way joysticks. ...may have to build two of these Arcade sticks ;) Thanks for the great videos!

Thanks for the reminder. I recently retired my ChampionPi box (got too frayed), and since I have some PI 3B+s lying around, I might as well make an arcade-only box setup.

I built one two days ago using the same case and same length buttons... I had to bend the end of the wires at the bottom of each button to get it to fit and one button is still smashed into the usb encoder board so it feels super sticky. If you don't know what I mean, take a button and push the pins up into the button housing and then try clicking the button. Not sure how you or others are able to fit them without issues, but I've ordered the smaller sanwa style buttons to hopefully have more room to work with. Regardless, fun quick DIY project.

There is a tab on the end of the cables. Press the tab with a small flathead screwdriver and they will come off easily.

Does the encocder board drive the LEDs via the USB cable or does it need an additional power source?

Hi drew I have just built an all in one arcade joystick with a pi4 and vman arcade image... how hot do these pi 4s get running arcade games just trying to see if I'd need more than standard heatsink kit. Thanks

Do you think this will work for a switch? Using a USB USC adapter?

silly question for anybody that can answer did I see correctly that the button work without the led and if so can I connect a switch to the led wire harness to be able to turn the led lights on and off without it affecting the use of the buttons. I have seen many builds but never found a clear answer to this question. thanks as always for the content.

You could run a switch between the cable that goes to the encoder board in the five volt power

@@drewtalks thank you never tried I always assumed that the led lights needed to be on for the buttons to work. The led buttons I have used in the past have never had a seperate 5v for the light they have always plugged directly to the encoder board for each button separately. Thanks as always great videos.

It would be cool if you built the Pi actually into the joystick case, add two 30/40mm fans either side for airflow. Then just plug in USB power and HDMI, portable gaming system :)

Yeah these boxes are cheap but there’s no weight to them. Hated the one I had.

Yeah you could add weights, also they sent me 25% off codes for my viewers on both the case and the buttons which puts it much cheaper.

  • @MobileDecay

Unless you really want a project you're better off just buying a stick on Amazon or something. This is way too expensive for a low quality stick that you have to build yourself.
