One use to pay a lot of money to get the "dreamcolor" version of a laptop screen, and now it is available at many price points. if only the dell would follow suit and dont charge that much.
All my stuff at home is Apple,.. but I have to admit I'm seriously tempted by a Surface Laptop 7. The only thing that's really holding me back is the fear of it being a 1st gen product. I think Software and OS updates will improve the chipset,.. but still a bit worried about ARM support for various peripherals and App vendors. If I do buy one, it certainly won't be my main machine for anytime in the near future.
I personally fell in love with 14in gaming laptops (Zephyrus G14, Tuff 14, Lenovo Slim 5, etc) Bought my first last year (G14 2022) on a big sale, I use it more than my $1,500 gaming PC I built, so I sold it and haven't looked back
I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on reliable low-cost laptops that could be used to host a server/bitcoin node, something that would be left running 24/7
We're in a bit of a pickle at work. I work on a cruise ship as a photographer, meaning I do a lot of creative work in Lightroom and Premiere Pro. The Snapdragons would be great, but they don't support PP or anyother filmmaking-software yet and X86 laptops get so loud and warm that it is uncomfortable for everyone else around me. Lastly, IT won't let buy Macbooks because "they're not supported"...
I cannot remember the laptop market to be this exciting! I personally wait for the new Zen 5 generation from AMD since I need something highly performant for my photo/video work.
My own Qualcomm laptop is used by me as a main machine. As it happens they are also pretty good on battery time which is a big plus for me. And USB C charging it from a smartphone charger? Oh man i love it! I don't need to go with manufacturers ac adapter. Just bought another one even if it's slower charging (65 Watts Power Delivery can charge 70Wh battery for about 1h 30 minutes from 20% to 100%). I think i might be able even to charge it by car charger. So travelling is really not an issue anymore. Lets hope that Intel Lunar Lake laptop models will allow that as well.

One of the factors you should take into account is also the budget, especially for those who don't have lots of money for a powerful computer and/or live in countries where everything is expensive.
@zeusx6479 True, it's pretty the same in Italy, but luckily I managed to get an Asus TUF A15 2023 with a Ryzen 7 7735hs and an RTX 4060m(115w+25w) on sale for €999 instead of the full price of €1399, which feels like a steal for a laptop that comes with a full powered RTX 4060 since most of the other options at the same price had an RTX 4050 or were a bit more expensive.
Thanks for sharing your insights Matt. I do want to get a new laptop for my wife, but I'm going to wait a while. I want to see what Intel has up its sleeve, and I want to wait until the Snapdragon laptops mature.
I'm watching this video from my new Surface Laptop 7 with Snapdragon X. I went through Windows updates, Steam game downloads and tried playing Portal for some time - haven't heard the fan even once, and the laptop didn't even feel warm. Sleeping and waking up is instant. I was also thinking that I shouldn't be buying a laptop now, because even though Snapdragon has the efficiency lead, there will be AMD Strix Point coming very soon, then Meteor Lake refresh and Lunar Lake. But, I went to a shop to check the laptops, and I fell in love with the absolutely insane build quality of the Surface Laptop 7. I think it's masterfully designed everywhere, including its bottom, which yes, does matter to me. And the touchpad is amazing, arguably better than a Macbook Air touchpad. Laptops are highly physical devices that we are touching all the time, and overall build quality + usage experience is the most important factor.
Thanks. I liked your overview of Asus Zenbook S16 with AMD Ryzen 9 AI 370 HX. I think thats the option to go for. I will wait to see thermals and efficiency in your review.
I bought G16's for the nephews and they are hapy with them. I not expecting a huge jump with the new series of processors but I'm curious for the AMD stuff.
Based on Intel's issues with their HX-series chips, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy an HX-series laptop at all, and I suspect a lot of the issues seen there are actually applicable for the raptor and lunar lake CPUs. I wager that AMD's Ryzen platform is going to be the best thing going forward when considering stability, efficiency, and performance.
Exactly! Ryzen 7 7840U CPU is excellent for laptops. Not Apple M chip level of battery life, but still good. You can get 8 to 10 hours of max battery life. Most people are not doing serious level of work past 4 hours straight away from a home or office desk anyway.
buy a 2023 model gaming laptop at big discounts... they are often the same gaming performance as 2024 models, there was hardly any improvements. If you can wait, wait for 2025.
For gaming laptops nvidia is releasseing the 50 series in a bit. You could argue that an hour or 2 for a thin laptop is not as inportant as being stuck with last gen tech for performance
There was a time where I had a gaming laptop as my only device. It was during the time when carrying your pc and monitor to LAN-parties was too much. Now, my pc is powerful enough that even if I were to get a 4080 in the laptop, my PC would still outperform. Also, I'm not going to LAN-parties anymore, so gaming with mobility in mind is not a priority. That's why I can still drop a solid budget, but I'm not sacrificing on gaming performance - I want my laptop to suck at gaming XD
One thing on AI, in the case of Softwrae developer, IDE has already started using AI to enhance developer experience using on device AI, so not sure about other work follow but for software developer getting machine that can handle AI workload big plus point.
Matthew its important to note, ASUS has not mentioned anything about the new G16 having 4080 and 4090 GPUs, from what I read, the new AMD version will be up to a 4070 GPU
I bought an ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DV with Ryzen 7 3750H Cpu and GeForce RTX 2060 GPU and 16 gb ram back in 2020. Still great for everything I want to do. I think I will wait 1.5 year more for a new one.
I'll be out of a laptop in a week (changing jobs) and I'm in the market for a new laptop. I just picked up a heavily discounted HP Spectre x360 14. I like it so far, but I don't use the 2-in-1 feature + pen and it's still a lot of money to drop in one go. I'm considering returning it within the 30-day window and buying a cheap Thinkpad as a transition machine and waiting for these new developments with Lunar Lake and the new AMD as well.
Intel is in Turmoil and the Snapdragon chip has not been adopted wide enough for software developers to care to provide compatible software. The best laptops to purchase are either Ryzen based chips or the true and tested Macbooks.
I have been looking to replace my laptop for a while now. Last year I upgraded the ram from 4GB to 16GB and relplaced the HDD 1TB with a Crucial MX SSD 1TB. It speeded it up a lot but the AMD A9-9420 RADEON R5 CPU is really slow, it struggles to play 1080P video on youtube. So since crimbo I have been looking at replacing my laptop with a gaming laptop. Just waiting to see the options that are available with the AMD and INTEL CPU releases. Apple Macbooks are just too expensive. Informative video @MatthewMoniz.
I'm eager to see the extent to which ASUS will enhance the FLOW 13 tablet's GPU capabilities. Owning the RMT02, I absolutely adore it and am curious about the future advancements. I believe the form factor and capabilities warrant the price.
I'm waiting for screen upgrades. a 4K OLED glossy panel with high refresh, high brightness and low reflectivity is what I need in my laptop! Also the G16 not having per key RGB and a glass trackpad and unupgradable RAM are very negative points.
Simple answer, yes, especially if you need to use enterprise softwares, despite many enterprise software developers moving their softwares towards mobile versions, the big ones are still stuck in Windows mode. Or, even if they have versions for mobile OS, the versions available lacks a lot of capabilities. Which is why in this day an age, if you are buying a portable device for work, get a laptop. I tried going with an Ipad, and just within 10minutes, i couldn't stand using the Ipad... If you don't use enterprise software, doesn't care about software, only plays games, then you're probably just living off your parents, and you can do whatever you want.

be great if there's an overall/summary review of snapdragon laptops from the snapdragon performance itself to the overall laptop package eg. whether certain snapdragon laptops can perform as well as an intel laptop. understand it may not be an easy review coz just like intel laptops, they and their batteries may perform/ last differently. but since snapdragon is sort of like a new territory for us regular users, it'd be good to know.
I agree this year is probably the most weird in the last 5 6 years atleast. With intel ultra chips having arc integrated graphics, normal 14th gen chips with iris graphics, nvidea restricting new dlss tech to latest cards, snapdragon processor with powrful cpu and medium gpu, apple m3 m4 being super tempting ( now they can play some games too) , windows and literally everybody trying to squeeze ai everywhere. So much confusion i think gone are days where we just recommend like if you are gamer/video editor buy these else for office work buy these. 😵💫
just finding it interesting on how the hardware is evolving, still going strong with my ideapad 15", that is atleast 4 years old and no need to upgrade haha
Near the year end is much better than 2022 and 2023. Chip progression was suck for a couple of year lately. Late availability for AMD and minor improvement for Intel. I hope this year we can expect new performance and efficiency improvment.
You over-simplify: - AI on NPUs is a caricature indeed but real AI runs on dGPUs. - There are x64 notebooks with very long battery life. It is not only Snapdragon and Macbooks. --robert jasiek
I think I'll wait for the next G14...again. The current one is wonderful, but I would like a 4080 instead of a 4070 and maybe fully upgradable RAM and a different screen resolution (WTH is "3K"?) So, those high end games will still have to run low settings and 1080p for now in my 2017-18 HP OMEN. 😂
ARM laptops are just a gimmick. Sure, they are fast and quiet and in many ways better than their X86 counterpart. But it's in the end of the day not a major difference between them. And 15-20 hour of battery life has been possible on laptops for the last 10 years.
Imo AMD shouldn't have changed their naming again...not only did they recently change the naming already, but Intel did it because they needed a reinvention, to tell people that the new chips weren't like the old ones that were terrible in terms of power draw/battery life...AMD in the other hand really didn't need this change cause their chips were always pretty good... also since you didn't mention it in the video, would it be worth it to wait for the RTX 50 series for a lighter gaming laptop?
Qualcomm has already shown its hand and it's ok if you don't need much app compatibility.... Definitely wait for Lunar Lake, Ryzen 5, and M4 to see how they all compare. Then buy....
Hi Matthew, Magnificent Channel, It is great help for those off us who do not understand as much about this. After watching many videos, I am considering 3 laptops: Surface 7, Lenovo yoga Slim 7x, and Galaxy book 4 Edge (14"). Last one the most chipest for me. What would be your personal choice and which one would you recommend in terms of battery and efficiency, designed for mixed use of web browsing, viewing video and video editing? Greetings fron Spain.
Lol...he just told us the AMD 3xx laptop he has in for review is awesome, but he can't say so yet with benchmarks, hence why he's telling you all to wait.
I was planning to buy a laptop but all the prices aren't for me, I want something for long term without breaking the bank. Also can't buy a Mac because programs like SolidWorks aren't available
All new laptops are not worth buying because there is no upgrades anymore that has put me off and am no longer thinking of ever buying one. If i want to replace my Battery or upgrade my Ram and Hard Drive i should be able to easily without pulling the whole thing to pieces so i can keep it many years longer .
Using my M4 iPad Pro I notice it is very snappy and a big upgrade in feel and fluidity versus my M1 iPad Pro. If the M4 MacBooks show the same spark then they will be a great upgrade for M1 users.
My question is, will the Macs on M4 be able to play with the new gaming tool kit, and will Windows on Arm start to show up, meaning devs will start working on native Arm apps? Or is all of what I said nonsense?
I have a Question: Currently my system is a i7 8700k GTX1070 16gb Ram ddr4 I'm struggling to decide if a Small Gaming PC build with eighter i5 or i7 and a 4070 Super with 32gb ddr5 would be better than a Laptop with equal Hardware (like a Legion 5i pro) Use would be Gaming, some light office work and some CAD Design (Catia V5 and Fusion) I have space for a ATX build but would be happier with something smaller. Just worried wirh the upgradeability of Laptops. Thanks for every bit of help i will get!
I'm waiting for 2025 to get a new laptop. There will be the new GPUs (hopefully) from nvidia, New Intel and amd CPUs, there will be more likely the usage of CAMM ram, better screens, they are starting to use haptic trackpacks. Next year seems to be the converging of all new tech
Maybe I will upgrade my M1 Max to M3 Max but I don’t see me upgrading my Intel Laptop because I won’t spend a single cent for another x86 system and what they presented with the first series of ARM laptops is far away from a laptop I want to use. The Windows transition to ARM is messed up again.
Given Intel's laptop market share is 80%, I really don't they care. Given that Intel's market share with corporations, small businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit across the planet is 99.9%, they really, really don't care...
I'm looking for a ( kinda ) thin and light laptop right now, with a powerful CPU ( I want at least Ryzen 7 Zen 4 ) and the most basic CUDA enabled GPU ( RTX 3050 or 4050 ), and the options are pretty scarce. There's the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 16 but the config I want doesn't exist in my country ( Croatia ). I'm really stressing out over this because I want a nice laptop that could last me up to 5 years and I can't bother waiting for M4 since it's out of my budget, and the new Strix Point and Lunar Lake CPU's will take forever to arrive to my country.
The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 365 (shit names) might be the best all rounder chips of the year. If the leaked benchmarks are to be believed the CPU performance is desktop Zen 4 level (7900) and the iGPU of the 370 is a 3050m when running at 54w and a 2050m when running at 28w. Plenty to run pretty much any game, tho AAA games at like medium settings. And since they're widening the TDP range from 17w to 54w, you can have the best of both worlds, although of course the chip won't perform the same at 17w and 54w

Unfortunately need to buy a new one this year, but there are some good options out there despite the AI. I have no interest in the Copilot+ spyware laptops even if they went toe to toe with Macbooks. It's bad enough they're trying to shove AI into everything else, but ones that are specifically marketed to work with Recall are a no-go for me and not ones I will ever recommend. I was originally considering the Yoga Pro 9i but the real-world reviews point to it being a disappointment. The G16 is looking more like the option for my needs at this point.

Probably waiting for AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series Processors, but honestly screen (OLED - 4K more then 60hz) is pretty important on my next laptop.
I personally fell in love with 14in gaming laptops (Zephyrus G14, Tuff 14, Lenovo Slim 5, etc) Bought my first last year (G14 2022) on a big sale, I use it more than my $1,500 gaming PC I built, so I sold it and haven't looked back
good advice matt,
Thank you !
Sounds like a soggy limp pickle to me.
I cannot remember the laptop market to be this exciting! I personally wait for the new Zen 5 generation from AMD since I need something highly performant for my photo/video work.
Same!
That’s helpful information thank you 💙💙💯
My own Qualcomm laptop is used by me as a main machine.

The tax in my country is horrendous, the products costing 1k usd in America , the same costs 1.5k usd in my country, so it's even worse😂
This video was exactly what I needed at the perfect time. Thanks!
I bought G16's for the nephews and they are hapy with them. I not expecting a huge jump with the new series of processors but I'm curious for the AMD stuff.
Ive a desktop... The biggest issue is that u need to go over and do whatever u r doing... It's irritating... This leads to a loss in productivity
30 percent compare to Meteor Lake.... what prevent you from just getting Ryzen 7000 laptop right now then?
Exactly! Ryzen 7 7840U CPU is excellent for laptops. Not Apple M chip level of battery life, but still good. You can get 8 to 10 hours of max battery life. Most people are not doing serious level of work past 4 hours straight away from a home or office desk anyway.
Thank you soo much for explaining everything... I had soo many doubts, some of them are clear now
You're welcome!
@@MatthewMonizwhich processor anyone should consider to buy for professional and gaming ?
Ryzen new 300AI chip or Intel Ultra 9?
buy a 2023 model gaming laptop at big discounts... they are often the same gaming performance as 2024 models, there was hardly any improvements. If you can wait, wait for 2025.
But they arent
Finally after they release the new lineup I can get the previous gen at my budget
I need a thin and light gaming for college in late August. Do u think the amd chips will be out and reviewed by then or should I buy now?
should wait for new amd to be available
I bought an ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DV with Ryzen 7 3750H
Cpu and GeForce RTX 2060 GPU and 16 gb ram back in 2020.
The new Core Ultra 200V series of chips may be the best thing to happen to Windows laptops, ever.
Glossy panel with low reflectivity?!
@@PlatinAviation Yes.. like in the latest Galaxy Book 4 series, Galaxy S24 Ultra and Apple iPad screens
Strix Point will be the one to get if you want affordable. Don't worry about Lunar Lake
I really hope you're right 🤞🏻
Simple answer, yes, especially if you need to use enterprise softwares, despite many enterprise software developers moving their softwares towards mobile versions, the big ones are still stuck in Windows mode.
Get yourself a framework so you could upgrade it whenever you want.
@@jpquebec123 Oucch. I have ordered mine with new 2.8k display and it is not shipped yet. thanks for the info. I will definitely rethink about my purchase. Would you mind sharing more info? Like was it 13 or 16?
Literally built my first pc (4080S 7800X3D) recently after having a Legion 5 3070 laptop for 3 years. PC is just better, but you do miss the portability.
Agreed! It costs less too. For $1300, it gives you far more than most laptops.
@@akin242002 agreed, my build cost me just under 2k - laptop was 1200 - my pc build will last at least 5 years, whereas my laptop was starting to reach its limits in 1 year
be great if there's an overall/summary review of snapdragon laptops from the snapdragon performance itself to the overall laptop package eg. whether certain snapdragon laptops can perform as well as an intel laptop. understand it may not be an easy review coz just like intel laptops, they and their batteries may perform/ last differently. but since snapdragon is sort of like a new territory for us regular users, it'd be good to know.
I have factory reset my laptop and put it away. My galaxy phone has replaced my laptop, there's no reason to use it anymore.
You over-simplify:
- AI on NPUs is a caricature indeed but real AI runs on dGPUs.
- There are x64 notebooks with very long battery life. It is not only Snapdragon and Macbooks.
--robert jasiek
I think I'll wait for the next G14...again. The current one is wonderful, but I would like a 4080 instead of a 4070 and maybe fully upgradable RAM and a different screen resolution (WTH is "3K"?)
So, those high end games will still have to run low settings and 1080p for now in my 2017-18 HP OMEN.
The problem is that Windows 11 sucks. Intel processors have also issues.
Qualcomm has already shown its hand and it's ok if you don't need much app compatibility.... Definitely wait for Lunar Lake, Ryzen 5, and M4 to see how they all compare. Then buy....
Hi Matthew,
Magnificent Channel, It is great help for those off us who do not understand as much about this.
Great video!
Thanks!
I save you some time if that is your question:
If you need one now buy it now if you don't - wait
Lol...he just told us the AMD 3xx laptop he has in for review is awesome, but he can't say so yet with benchmarks, hence why he's telling you all to wait.
I actually don’t have one in yet but I will soon. Stay tuned
Waiting for new models, probably won't get intel, but dunno when they'll be released
I was planning to buy a laptop but all the prices aren't for me, I want something for long term without breaking the bank. Also can't buy a Mac because programs like SolidWorks aren't available
When will we see the lunar lake laptops ?
Fall
@@MatthewMoniz I got faith they'll be the best of both like you were saying
Very helpful ty
All new laptops are not worth buying because there is no upgrades anymore
that has put me off and am no longer thinking of ever buying one.
If i want to replace my Battery or upgrade my Ram and Hard Drive
i should be able to easily without pulling the whole thing to pieces
so i can keep it many years longer .
I'm certainly trying to figure out if I should return my G14 while it's in the window to wait for the Zen 5 chips.
Rocking my omen 15 2021 for work and gaming (valorant mainly) at the moment other than battery, no complains
M4 is gonna be a incremental upgrade imo. M3 will get discounted. But otherwise, nice advice. If you need a laptop, just buy it.
Using my M4 iPad Pro I notice it is very snappy and a big upgrade in feel and fluidity versus my M1 iPad Pro. If the M4 MacBooks show the same spark then they will be a great upgrade for M1 users.
MacBooks have 8% global laptop market share for a reason...
heard time is money and thought "ah nice he's gna tell us to wait for price drops"
Glad to hear you want me to speed buy laptops instead lmao
My question is, will the Macs on M4 be able to play with the new gaming tool kit, and will Windows on Arm start to show up, meaning devs will start working on native Arm apps? Or is all of what I said nonsense?
Just bought the samsung galaxy book4 pro 16, hope ive made a good purchase
was it any good?
I have a Question:
Currently my system is a i7 8700k GTX1070 16gb Ram ddr4
I'm struggling to decide if a Small Gaming PC build with eighter i5 or i7 and a 4070 Super with 32gb ddr5 would be better than a Laptop with equal Hardware (like a Legion 5i pro)
Use would be Gaming, some light office work and some CAD Design (Catia V5 and Fusion)
I have space for a ATX build but would be happier with something smaller.
Given that Intel's market share with corporations, small businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and nonprofit
across the planet is 99.9%, they really, really don't care...
I have no idea what i should do 😭 i have uni starting in September so i want to get a laptop for school work/a little bit of gaming/editing, do you suggest i wait. I currently have an iPad that i could probably use for a short time but I’m gonna need a laptop real soon.
Is the zephyrus G14 with the 4060 a good buy right now ? Or if I wait 2025 I can get better for less expensive ?
I’m definitely in the camp that needs/ wants the best of both worlds expect I’m also on time crunch as I need a laptop for the coming academic year? Does anyone have faint idea when the new intel chip laptops will release?
Snapdragon still gets quite hot doing more or less nothing. It's a bit depressing.
Thanks for sharing all that data.
Now please explain how an efficient chip with a fan can get hot?
Once you can't delete this comment.
I just want good laptop for gaming and programming. Any suggestions?
I am going to check Lunar Lake laptops with great interest. Maybe, just maybe igpu will finally be enough.
Any ideea when we can expect the ryzen 300 series reviews to come out?
Few weeks
I would also wait for next year if youre looking for an ultra book like xps 16 etc..
Good advice im gonna upgrade my gtx 1650 laptop to an rtx 4000 series especially since my current one has problems making it difficult to use sometimes.
Let us know what you end up getting.

I'm buying a laptop only if I get to travel more (like once every 2 weeks for a night) or get to work for myself but on third party site. Of course, avoiding Snapdragon and thinking about Mac (Windows 11 is coming and it's crap)...
You do know that Windows has 75%-80% market share AND Windows 11 has been around for over a year.
