If you're a current 3rd year, then you guys needed to do more research to show the work you did in the didactic years since you don't have step 1 scores. If you aren't in any interest groups or mentoring/teaching groups (i.e. Suturing courses, anatomy lab, etc) you could potentially get involved in those too. If you want to do anything competitive though, you'll need to do research too.

Ask your residents if they have case reports or projects that you can help finish
