    I recall reading somewhere that the saucer section of the Enterprise was inspired by the C-57 flying saucer. Seen in Forbidden Planet, and a couple of Twilight Zone episodes.

    That you for answering a question that has been lingering for 60 years.
    As a kid, I always thought the Enterprise was a bit of an awkward design, but is hands down the most beautiful space ship ever designed.
    When I say awkward, I mean odd that it had several long connections, like between the saucer and the main hull, and the hull and the engines. It made a bit more sense, when they showed the saucer separate in TNG. Also, it really bothered my in which ever of the new Star Trek movies that some attacking aliens species cut one of those connections, and "Kirk" said "They knew exactly where to hit us", when it was plainly obvious to anyone on their first glimpse of the ship.

    You missed a few details. Like The sketch he did and are showing here is upside down. As it was when he handed it to Roddenberry, But He loved it so much (even after he said it was upside down) That he modified and redid the sketch.

      True, it was a small moment of panic when he saw that they suspended the little 4 inch model upside down. He was convinced that they would insist it be that way now. lol.

      @@TREK-WORLD In "Star Trek II," the Reliant was built that way because producer Harve Bennent didn't understand he was holding the faxed sketch upside down.

    I've heard that the 4" model was very crude and was actually balsa wood and cardboard. Enough to get an idea of the shape and proportions, but not much more. The similarly sized Catspaw metal props are far more detailed and crafted than this was.
    So, it being tossed out or lost early on shouldn't come as any surprise.
    We should be glad that the 33" model, 11 foot model, the Catspaw in lucite prop, and the AMT model used for "The Trouble With Tribbles" made it all these years!

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  2 місяці тому +1

      Agreed. Although I do find it rather amazing that we’ve accounted for pretty much every model ever made except for the 4 inch one. But I’m not sure that anyone would be able to authenticate it if someone came up with one.

    • @Starshipsforever

      @@TREK-WORLD It is amazing, especially since Hollywood in general wasn't known for keeping props and costumes past a certain point. It costs money to keep stuff in storage, and not being able to use them for other productions means they're dead weight.
      And you forgot that the other Catspaw model is also missing. That one certainly got altered for its second role as the Enterprise in "The Doomsday Machine", with its chain removed, painted at least the basic hull grey of the other bigger models and all.

    OK - I gotta ask this - and maybe someone knows...So please feel free to share I grew up in North Carolina around the Burlington area, and at one point ( up until just 10 years ago, in fact ) there was an old closed wood shop along Route 87 in Alamance County that had a sign I never fully figured out, as you couldn't read the name of the business on the sign, just the words " HOME OF THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE " ? There were rumors that sections of the set/filming model were made here...Was there a connection between a North Carolina woodworking shop and Hollywood we just never knew?

    What is interesting, and rarely pointed out, were Gene's original plans to explain the propulsion reaction between the two 'power pods'. Though the TV budget did not allow for this special effect to be shown - the original plan was later revised to show the energy reaction from the two 'pods' from the observation/conference room in the first movie now referred to as ST-TMP. From that concept grew an entire story arc which centered around the construction of the 'Constitution-Class' of ships successes and failures. Sadly, this did not occur. There was renewed interest in revisiting this plot topic in 'Enterprise' the TV series, but Rick Berman stated that it was too tedious and unnecessary - thus dropping the idea completely.
    Thank you, Rickey-Boy!! Another lost opportunity.

      Hi Barbara, good to see you again! One of the things I liked that they did do when they were researching Discovery, is that they went back and looked at all the other various concept ship designs that had been done over the years but never actualized. I think that there could be a goldmine of stories and material involving the technologies they evaluated but decided not to move forward with.

    • @hodges1263
      @hodges1263 2 місяці тому

      I know Roddenberry really wanted that effect in TMP, and it would have looked interesting, but it was too difficult to achieve at the time. I've seen a few storyboards that show what it might have looked like. Even without the effect, it does explain why Roddenberry insisted that the nacelles always be in pairs.

      @@TREK-WORLD Agreed! I am a particular fan of the Daedalus class and thought this SHOULD have been the predecessor to the NX class and not the other way around. In fact, you could just skip the NX class altogether as far as I am concerned and go directly from Daedalus to the Constitution. I would have loved to see the Daedalus interior looking pre-1960's Star Trek with hallways looking more like the interior of a submarine with cramped passageways and stairwells, no turbo lifts and multi-bunks in cabins for crew members! Well, you can tell I've spent WAY too much time in fantasy land contemplating the whichness-of-what in the pre-Trek world. Back to the sad reality of Discovery (or LACK-OF Discovery).
      Once again, thanks for your attention to detail in the history of Trek!
