The Unlikely Partnership of Comedy & Pain | Daliso Chaponda | TEDxManchester

  • Manchester-based, Malawi-born comedian Daliso Chaponda will be talking about the counterintuitive notion that where painful things have occurred or are occurring you often find that comedy is not far behind. As an example, during his star turn on Britain’s Got Talent, Daliso made light of his home country’s poverty when he informed the audience he was from Malawi and said, “If any of you don’t know where that is, it’s where Madonna adopted all the babies from… I do miss my little brother.” So what’s going here. Why do painful realities and comedy so often partner up? Daliso Chaponda has been a stand-up comedian since 2001 beginning his career in Canada. He moved to the UK in 2006 where he opened for other comedians such as John Bishop. In 2008, his comedy earned him a spot in the Edinburgh Fringe “Best of the Fest” list. Daliso shot to primetime fame in 2017 when his audition for Britain’s Got Talent received a golden buzzer from judge Amanda Holden with his BGT performances going viral on social platforms and receiving 200m views.
Daliso has since continued to appear regularly in broadcast media including The Royal Variety Performance 2020 (ITV), Britain’s Got Talent Champions 2019 (ITV), QI (BBC2), The Apprentice: You’re Fired (BBC2), Good Evening Britain (ITV), The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), and The Now Show (BBC Radio 4).
Daliso is also the writer, creator, and host of his Rose d’Or nominated BBC Radio 4 show Citizen of Nowhere that has aired for two series. Born in Zambia to Malawian parents, he now resides in Manchester. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Love this man, he has a great sense of humour. I struggle with depression and anxiety and I have a very warped sense of humour that is what gets me through. So he is right, add some humour to your situation and it will help.

Daliso is such a true inspirational figure, he really love to share his own feeling and his observation on reality events through his humor joke, when I saw him the very first time on BGT, I already like this person not just he has that humor, he also got a big heart. At the same time, he is the very first comedian writing joke without any offensive languages.

Hi maureen. My teenage Chilean daughter had depression & we spent 4months together in my native india, and she saw the teeming millions of people travelling, selling, working walking but all with hopes/plans to have a better life but facing the hardships in their own way all around, made her think/react on how lucky she is to have what she had back home and now she is back in the university in a much better state of mind. Just wanted to let you know. Hope you are good now & wish you the best

If it hadn’t been for comedy, in my case dark humour, I would not been alive today.
But I learned to laugh about hurtful, dark and depressing stuff in my life from my mother.
I am so grateful to have that gift in my life; humour in, and about, dark and terrible things x)
And yes: God have a great sense of humour!

10:10 Speaking of modern trauma therapy: this is, what's actually done. E.g., read about the IRRT rational. There you imagine the traumatic sequence/situation (with help of a therapist) AND then you introduce a helping figure/person into this stream of memories, helping your younger self. It's not easy, but very effective.

There are people who say funny things and there are people who say things funny. And then there are people like Daliso who can do both. Irish comedian Frank Carson's catchphrase was "It's the way I tell 'em" because he was acknowledging that some of the jokes were not necessarily all that funny in themselves. His delivery was the key. Daliso has both the content and the delivery.

I have extremely advanced fibromyalgia so I deal with constant physical and emotional pain and I cope a lot with fairly dark humor. Sometimes my bf asks why I constantly deflect with jokes and why I can't just be real and I tell him if I didn't somehow turn this pain into something I can laugh about, even if he doesn't think it's funny, I wouldn't be able to survive it.

I have really enjoyed your acts and this talk, I think you are brilliant in your craft and very funny. I push back though on this "look what you people did" sentiment. It was maybe just a punch line for you, but it permeates so many discussions and attitudes...and is wrong. I didn't do anything. Isn't lumping me in with the white people that participated in slavery rather blatant racism? Racism isn't going to be diminished with more racism.
