  • In this video, I save a 1996 Mongoose from a life of service as an indoor bike trainer and put it back on the single tracks. I have to replace the elastomers in a Rock Shox Quadra 21R
For some cool stickers and other stuff, shop here: www.depuesshop.com
Here are the parts I used.

Man, that looks fresh off the showroom floor.. Pristine. Im a fan of the Schwinn Moab line they from back then. Very capable and quality bikes were coming out of Mongoose back then.

Such a weird little era. The previous generation Alta was chromoly and it was great, too. Full rigid, early STX group. They had a "Hilltopper" model too which was really nice. Reminds me of that last gasp of nice Schwinn bikes in the 90s; they get lumped in with the whole big-box stigma but they were very well-made, well-spec'd for the time bikes. Glad you saved one.

I'm obviously a bit biased as my username gives away, but Mongoose kept building good bikes up to this very day. They went through multiple periods, from Brunswick up to Pacific, but the upper end has always remained (I have a Valiant, 2 Canaans, a couple of Tyax's, a SX6.7, and even have an Alta frame).
The bigger thing that seems to catch everyone's attention is that the Mongoose name got slapped onto a whole earth shattering amount of lower end models as well, but they kept on making good bikes each year. Not on the level of the old Tange framesets per say, but good bikes nonetheless.

    Nice.
A couple of years ago i also found and recovered a 90's specialized hardtail, made it into a full rigid, stock. Those were simpler times and bikes lasted a lot longer with much less maintenance.

Awesome job and much less work than most of your builds. It's amazing what a difference a seemingly small detail like a new saddle makes to the overall appearance of the bike. Looks like all business now.

Interesting the way they went with the mid range bikes back in the day. Unfortunately by 98/99 2000 at the latest was the end of the well built mongooses. I ended up picking up an Amplifier recently and its been kicking my backside coming from working on bmx bikes 🤣. But seeing content like this has kept me going seeing that these bikes aren't as big of a challenge as I once thought they were.

I have the IBOC SX, it is Tange custom tubing and it feels great. It is kinda trashy, but I still like it and use it as a rigid steel grocery shopper.

Looked like it was mainly an indoor trainer. Everything really clean. Wonder why the shocks were trashed?

    What is a trainer wheel?

That tire that was on the back was used for an indoor bike resistance trainer. The trainer turns your bike into a stationary bike.
