I worked 35 years in the private sector paying into S.S. Then I worked 11 years in schools which cost me 2/3rds of my earned S.S. benefits...how ridiculous and devastating the WEP is to hard working people.... :/
I feel like I have been robbed every month for the last 8 years . Equals $47,520. I can't believe I will only get $100 - $150 of my money back. I have to live another 26 years to recover the lost money. We, as teachers, always have to take less or settle. It seems like I am being punished for going into education after I left my other profession. I appreciate that something is getting done - or at least I hope it is. Thank you for making this a top priority. I've been asking my congressman to work on this for 8 years.
I advised my daughter NOT to go into teachers because of WEP and GPO. She worked in private business for 10 years and I didn't want her to be effected like me. I worked for 22 years in business before I went into the school district. I am penalized 2/3 of social security I paid in. I was not a teachers so made less and retired last year after 24 years.
I was self employed for 15 years so paid both sides of SS (employer and employee). I worked 17 years in a school district. I prefer the pension that I paid into because I will get everything I paid back. With SS, if you die before you retire you only get $255 benefit. If you die one month after you retire, all payments stop. Think of all the people who paid into the system and pass before they retire. Their family gets only the $255.
I am a current retiree who has paid my 40 qtrs my military career and private sector jobs. I am not yet old enough to get SS would I be considered covered under the current WEP etc or under the new laws changes in effect when i do coolect?
If I am receiving SS now and if God forbid that something would happen to my spouse, would I be able to drop my SS and receive my spouse because my spouse SS is much more than mine?

Hello from NewMexico. 😊
Hi from Lago Vista!

I retired both military and teachers retirement.
Thanks Mr. Lee for answering my question.

Good Morning! What about those who have contributed and are eligible to receive SS, however, most of their check would be withheld?

If/when my husband predeceases me, my income will be cut by 2/3. Life will be very difficult at that time.
If I am receiving SS now and if God forbid that something would happen to my spouse, would I be able to drop my SS and receive my spouse because my spouse SS is much more than mine?
Pay back better!
