  • In this episode of TFBTV, ‪@JamesReeves‬ tests the accuracy of the Springfield Hellion, also known as the Croatian HS Produkt VHS-2. James noticed in his earlier review that the VHS-2 was incredibly accurate, so James and Ryan put the Hellion to the test today to see if they can squeeze sub-MOA groups from a combat rifle.

Happy Hellion owner here. I'm convinced that it was intended to be a very serious combat rifle, built by people who know what that means. I do hope somebody makes an aftermarket trigger for it, despite being a two stage trigger with a reasonable amount of travel after the wall, it still feels way too much like running a DAO revolver trigger. Still, in competition conditions I've gotten my hits quickly out to 300 yards with an unmagnified red dot using M193 ammo, and that's about as good as I can shoot no matter what the hardware is.

  • @acrienteangelic1862
    @acrienteangelic1862 7 місяців тому +86

My Hellion now has about 9K down the pipe with the majority of it suppressed and didn't clean it for 6 months. Finally gave it a bath and took it back out for a re-check on my zero and not only has it held zero with that wonky top-rail disassembly (that mechanically attaches to the barrel which is normally a bad thing), it's still sub-MOA with PMC X-TAC XM193 and IMI Razorcore 77gr OTM (Mk. 262 clone). Now, the gun does suffer from the thermal drift the Famas and G36 it borrows most of its design from do, but I'm only seeing groupings openning up by 1-2 MOA instead of 3-4 for a TBT TG36 (G36 clone) and 5 MOA for Faxon pencil barrels for AR15s.
As for trigger, the Hellion's trigger is better than other bullpups for one major reason: it is mechanically an AR15 FCU. It doesn't *look* like an AR15 milspec FCU and it won't fit one either, but they work in the same mechanical fashion and so the same job you do to tune a milspec AR15 trigger you can do to tune the Hellion trigger (MAJOR DISCLAIMER: AR15 milspec trigger tuning is great for the point of IF you screw it up there's more to replace it. If you screw up a Hellion's trigger it's a little more hoop to jump through to get another. Please have a certified gunsmith do this trigger job or do it at your own risk!). As such, and due to the sturdier trigger bar design of the Hellion, I have gotten mine to be almost equal in feel to the Ratwrx 20/20 AUG sear but with none of the drop safety issues.
My only major complaint of the Hellion is shared with Hop and that's the severe lacking of real estate with which to mount accessories such that they won't hinder ergonomics. Even a tape switch feels too bulky and in the way on that handguard, much less a light or anything else.

    • @wtice4632

Got a two point sling as well, and honestly that’s all I feel I need beyond an optic.

I can imagine that'd help with sales a lot.

    • @JohnZ556

The trigger did not improve over hundreds of rounds, I just learned to pull through as soon as I hit the first wall.
This rifle has a '3 stage' trigger: a very long pre trave to until 1st wall, spongy all to the way to 2nd wall, then a bit more creepy before the actual break. Finally reset to the 1st wall.

Hey, I just bought a Hellion. What a coincidence! Nothing like a little purchase confirmation bias in the morning to start the day off right.
This is my thought. I think a 16 inch bullpup is the do-it-all rifle. What do I mean by that, I mean it can do everything. A general purpose rifle or GPR as I'm calling it.
Think about it. 16 inch barrel but in a compact package just as short as a MK18. So its maneuverable enough to be effective in those close range distances but has the 16 inch barrel to deliver enough terminal effectiveness out to range.
If you told me every conflict I could see over a prolonged period of time was either going to be close range indoor engagements ONLY or longer range range engagements ONLY, I would totally absolutly take the MK18 or a 16 inch AR for those respective roles but neither are particularly well suited for the opposite rolls and nobody can guerentee me shit when it comes to engagements.
But if you have a 16 inch bullpup, it is suited for both roles. You can only carry one rifle with you at a time, you dont have an arsenal in your back pocket were you can swap guns and gear on the fly so that's where I see bullpups shining. As GPR rifles that can flex into every role effectively without having to swap to different specialized weapons.

Gotta jump in. Croatian here. This is a short insight about VHS D2 the longer barrel type. We used a lot of rifles before VHS, such as g36, good old AK and so on. The moment I fired it on the automatic mode i was like, what the hell, was that a 30 round mag, that shit didnt hit the target at all I thought to myself. When i went to the target i had a lot to see. This bitch is accurate even in auto mode. As for the single shot. I just couldnt miss. We were able to hit with precission targets up to 600 meters. 300 meters is no problem for VHS, as an avarage shooter you can put the rounds in 2-2,5 inch group on 300 meters with no problem thats 328 yards FYI. Mostly we use mechanical sights, and it makes little difference from optics, it is just about time of aiming that can be longer with mechanical diopter sights. We have models of the handle with builtin optic/red dot on it, not my cup of tea but some guys like it. I didnt see much difference with shorter barrel but I didnt shoot it on longer distance.

Im sure aftermarket will come for those sooner or later.
Oh also for my Maryland folks, its one of the few legal bullpups here. No AUG at all and No Tavor unless you get the 18.5" barrel version.

Heartening to hear that the vhs-2(2 versions, d(long barrel) and k(short barrel))/hellion is recognized to be a sound and accurate design by ppl outside country of origin. There's also the integrated optic (a la original aug and g36) for it, could be interesting to test that for accuracy if able to get hands on it.

Thanks for the video! I bought an AUG in 1984, but eventually sold it because of the fixed inferior optic (and I needed to money!). I'm all in for bullpups, so I bought a Tavor 7 (.308) and still might buy one of the big three in 5.56 (Tavor, AUG, or VHS). I'm more interested in handling, weight, and reliability, but I am very impressed by the VHS accuracy results, which may decide me. Not sure yet.

I just got a New FDE version a couple weeks ago. They changed the Safety on the new colored ones. I wonder about trigger too as I have felt the older ones in the stores and they were not near as nice as the one in my FDE. Feels like a hand gun trigger. same Gauge you used and I am getting 5 to 5 and a half lb pulls! break is actually pretty clean too. ya take up and reset are still long but the pull weight and break on mine are actually pretty nice. I felt crappier Milspec AR triggers than this.

@@DerDrecksack87They're not. A bullpup design is a niche idea that works in certain applications, but not most. Ergonomics , especially for anything that'll be fielded by a military in large numbers -- such as an adopted service weapon. Even the best bullpups are ergonomic nightmares, with suboptimal control schemes. But a person (or organization) doesn't bullpups because of their controls - they use them because they need a platform that is both relatively short and able to still have high velocity from a longer barrel. Right away, this relegates bullpups to a specific set of missions they'd be ideal for: Personal security, vehicle operations, and dense urban/cqb settings, where it's possible to have engagements in very long, but (relatively) very narrow, corridors such as hallways inside of office buildings, highrise stairwells, etc.
Don't think of a bullpup as an "this or that" application -- it's not a competition. Think of a bullpup as a platform that can compliment a broader selection of weapons that an individual or organization can leverage based on their particular needs in that moment; Just like how a SAW cannot replace an SMG or DMR for the applications that any of those things excel at, a bullpup is a specialized form factor that shouldn't be used to replace other weapons of other form factors. Think of it like a tool in a toolbox - just because you use your wrench as a hammer doesn't mean you should, and both are specialized for different things. The question isn't "which tool is better," the question is "which tool is better "
