  • John Moschitta is the fast talking guy most people don't know the name of. This FedEx commercial is what made him famous.
This is one of the many good ads to come from Sedelmaier, who also produced the Where's the Beef ads.

True it's like younger people might just see younger versions of "the adults" or people who remind them of their parents. There were young looking 25-30 year olds in the 80s too, but many more did seem to look middle aged

Brilliant ad! And effective, too. I first saw this in high school; six years later, at my first real job, when I needed to send something overnight, I immediately thought of FedEx thanks to this commercial. I teach an advertising class at a community college. Now, I can actually show my students this commercial instead of just tell them about it.

So many little details that make this commercial so wonderful wonderful wonderful. The repetitions & alliterations (especially on the P's and D's), that smooth camera pan in the secretary's office, and the way John keeps his facial expressions fixed. Particularly in that last scene where his eyes look like they're locked & almost rolled into the back of his skull, while his fingers manically manipulate the phone buttons. They were really such small movements, but the robotic delivery & deliberate stabbing of the buttons make his movements look so much larger.

This commercial for a present mail company starring the world’s fastest talker John Moschitta, Jr., back in 1981. The signature line “Okay, Eunice travel plans, I need to be in New York on Monday, LA on Tuesday, New York on Wednesday, LA on Thursday & New York on Friday, got it?” was widely imitated and became part of the American lexicon in the early 1980s. Mr. Moschitta, Jr., lived in the Southern California area and continued to act in national commercials.

And the best thing about this guy? UA-cam speech-to-text capture him pretty accurately. He's not only speaking his words with the speed of machinegun, but also clear enough that even youtube couldn't butcher it.

At 0.75 it sounds normal. It is good this guy existed pre-UA-cam, because now, you just have to run a video at 1.25x to achieve the same.

It wouldn't mean anything to people without context. Federal Express implies across the country fast (which was revolutionary for the time). After everyone knew what they did, FedEx made sense. That would be like if Kentucky Fried Chicken and International House of Pancakes just started with KFC and IHOP. It would be confusing.

There was a SNL commercial parody similar to this. A time travel delivery service for when it has to get there yesterday. Anyone else remember this?
