This war was never supposed to be titled the "great war". In fact I don't think i can find anybody who thinks war is great. The only reason WW1 was titled the great war was because the French was excited for the war and wanted to prove themselves in battle. So they called WW1 "The Great War"
PREDATORxBLADE Great doesn't always mean good. Great and Big are often synonymous in the English language. Also, were did you even hear that it was named Great war because the French wanted to prove themselves. I need some citation to believe this.
+༼ つ◕ω◕ ༽つ Wise Sage Doge Yeah your right it doesn't necessarily mean its good but the French were excited for this war. I don't have a citation but feel free to look it up on your own.
1:43 ..... Every single one of them reacted to those shots, by either looking away or putting their hand on their face. .... It goes to show, that video games are NOT just simply entertainment, but in fact art. This game will ALWAYS prove that.
Emile's death remains the only video game character that I've ever started to cry for Edit: after two years and thousands of more hours playing games, this still remains the only game I’ve actually cried for, not just a tear but actual sobbing even returning to this video to write this I still get emotional. The way they combined his letter and the music and the visuals of the memories and loved ones and fellow soldiers, was done to perfection. May we indeed always cherish and remember these valiant hearts
+Gi Min Oh...Don't cry do ya? Watch the Kenny ending for the walking dead where she leaves him at the gate. Then come back and look me in the text and type me you didn't cry.
Gi Min Seriously? How can you cry for Emile who doesn't talk (no offence, I love Emile, but I love Kenny more) but not cry when Kenny's giving a tearful goodbye?
I finished this game around 10 minutes ago. Now I'm here, lying in my bed, with a box of oreos nearby. I have laid down, tried not to cry, and am now crying a lot.
I saw the end a few months ago and I cried for hours.. Now that I am here and that I am crying again, I wonder why I felt the need to come back and see other people's reactions... This ending is so sad!
Just remember these people whether soldiers, medics, or anything else were heroes no matter what way you slice the cake, Remember the trenches and remember those who died in them
Valiant Heart deserve to be called one of the best game, simply because it makes me have my first cry over a sad story ending...even after i watch it over and over more than five times, i still bawl like losing someone dear. The first time i watch it, it literally felt like the time when i heard one of my good friend got into a car accident and die...still remember that i refused to come to my friend's house because i don't want my other friends sees me soaked in tears.
Same for me, the fact that this game achieve to give me tears made of it one of the greatest discoveries that I've made in 2014. It's a real masterpiece.
There are very few works of art that can make me emotionally respond. Very few books, even fewer movies, and finally, a total of three video games, have ever made me cry. This is one of them. Bravo.
MegaSparkster The Walking Dead, where Lee dies. And The Last of Us. I became very emotionally invested in that game, and it was one of the few that I actually bought and played instead of simply watching a walkthrough.
Dearest Marie As the war ends for me I have no regrets. I have seen too much horror. I hope fate has been more merciful to you. Our time on Earth is brief and mine has been filled with so much joy that I can only be thankful for how much I've been blessed. Most specially for the wonder you've brought into my life. This letter is my last. I've been found guilty by a military court for the death of an officer. It was not my intention to kill him. War Makes Men Mad... Though I failed Karl I know my sacrifice has not been in vain. I fought for my country and my liberty, my honor is assured. Since it is the will of God to separate us on Earth I hope we will meet again in heaven. Keep me in your prayers. Your Loving Papa. Always. Even Though Theyr bodies have long since returned to dust, their sacrifice still lives on, we must strive to cherish their memory, and never forget. R.I.P. Emile Chaillon 1867-1917 "May the world never forget this Valiant Heart"
Especially how that General was throwing men in front of machine gods . I don't undertanad how can a human being have no morals or realize what he is doing! World war 1 was a horrific war
for most of my life as a gamer i have hated games that depicted war as a fun game that is fought only by invincible nameless guys with bottomless arsenals and with noting in there head but the urge to kick as for some reason. the only reason someone could hate this game is that is serves as a cruel reminder that war is NOT fought by robots with unlimited lives, but by people, people who heard the call, people who fought for what they believed in, people with families, lives, and most of all,.....Valiant hearts.
yep. now if they want to make a war games, instead of shooting, they should try to using Medic as their main character, and showing how gruesome the true battlefield, as the medic endlessly figthting against god of death to save another people live, without considering who they help
Sgt.Derp, Brony with no sympathy. I feel you! With this moving ending of this phenomenal game in mind, I chose Valiant Hearts to be part of my Master Thesis. My lecturer was strongly against it when I suggested the topic to him, saying that games are not the right medium to depict war because it belittles the horrors of war and everything the soldiers had to go through, especially death and shell-shock. I tried to assure him that with this game this would not be the case, because you play individual characters and really feel their emotions. He said, that would make it even worse, but that I should decide for myself because it was my Master Thesis. I decided for Valiant Hearts because it really moved me and showed me the horrors of war with every piece of "newspaper", level description, and especially the end - and I hope that my lecturer will see why I think Valiant Hearts is suitable to be analysed AND furthermore, why I think it is a valuable and important reminder of the cruelty of war. "War Makes Men Mad" and it made me incredibly sad and melancholic. I was so depressed after every single chapter of the game simply because it reminded me of everyone fighting and dying, because of the scenery, the fallen men that just build up the background and foreground, and of course the end, that had me crying for hours. So thank you for your commentary! I absolutely agree with you!
"Growing up I never really cared about history. I thought it was boring and uninteresting. I only cared about the future, and the cool new technology. I never cared about the shit people go through...what they still go through today. War sucks. It's the worst thing man...has ever created." Cryaotic- 2014
"Even though their bodies have long since returned to dust, their sacrifice still lives on, we must strive to cherish their memory, and never forget." that hits hard
The best two responses fades with the game, pure astonishment with applause for Emile, and heartbreaking weeps for him as well. Both were pretty powerful to me.
_I have to say that this game really touched my heart. I remember crying in Final Fantasy 7 when Aerith died, but this game? My girlfriend and I cried when we finished it. Never had I played such a moving game, emotional, touching, and patriotic to all those that died in war. This game for me, is one of the GOTYs. I even had my friend play it and he is often emotionless sometimes stoic, and he cried..._
Yeah, I am also the kind of guy who just never cries or feels sad, for example I haven't felt genuinly sad at the end of the Walking Dead game, but this game has made me cry a little bit during almost every chapter, and the ending left me completely broken, I never cried so much in my life.
I actually finished the game this morning, had to see the ending 3 times idk why, just to feel the same shit in each one, not ashamed to say that this is the first time a game makes me cry, even watching and listening to this video maked me feel the same... Loved it
By far this is the most emotional game i've ever played. A simple story, amazing scores and if not excellent narrative. No game with high-end graphic can have this kind of story which could make people cry or at least interested in playing it, D4 for example, was a shame. Again, thank you Ubisolf and various talented artists in France for scoring such an amazing soundtrack and breath life into Valiant Hearts; a game that can move me, very deeply... To all of you and to Emile. Thank you.
There is so much emotion in this game and the ending is a masterpiece of touching sadness. All through the game, you are shown that in the end, war leaves only losers after a long way of suffering.
How the voice actor says the line "war makes men mad" with a broken voice.... it was just fking brilliant, like emotional and pure, have an impact to your soul, it deserves a reward for it.
I just finished this game... Crying my eyes out... Valiant hearts is obe of those special games that once you have finished it, you simply cannot play it again. This has earnt a solid 9 on my top 10 games of all time
This the only ending, that i really cry. My heart speed up, i try to keep straight face half minute in, my tears just drop his word just fly in. The more he speak, the more my tears drop.
One of the only games that I have sincerely cried about and sobbed as I watched this game unfold and be so interested in it and be so connected with the characters and to see Emile die was one of the saddest moments of my videogame history. God bless you all and God bless the veterans who have died and been wounded serving for our country
The message this game delivers is one that is ignored far too much. War is not a mere game that all your friends will walk away from happy and smiling. You will all be changed, if you're lucky. And if you're not, you will walk away alone, as the true heroes are not the survivors, but the ones who will never come home. They died so that others may live, and to see that politicians take their sacrifice for granted, and make poor decisions that end up costing the lives of millions over the most trivial of things only proves that we will always forget, that we as humans do not care for the lives of our fellow men and women, but only for ourselves, no matter who you think you are, we are all guilty. So please, take this message to heart and never forget again.
By far the absolute most touching ending in all of video game history. I've cried at this more than when my Grandpa who i was dearly close to died. That's how sad this game is! I love it and i'm so sad. You guys truly made the best example of how there are no winners in war.
Im someone that struggles to show emotion like crying. Like ive had my heart broken and couldn’t cry just because of this mental/emotional block i have from how i was raised that just prevented me from crying but this game takes that block away and makes me cry. I honestly thank this game for that cause once im able to i can let all of it out that ive been holding in. I’ll always cherish this game.
Im crying so much at this scene and wanted to go back in to the cell, i saw there is no return, im cryied so much when he die, it was end of my good day, nothing is more sad than this, we love you Emile :(
"All men thought that war will be a great adventure, showing our strengths and fighting for our country, but all we saw was our comrades dying, it was no adventure."
When I first reached the ending, I thought, once the officer calls for Emile, that I'd have to defend myself before the military court. Once the music began playing, I knew what would happen. I cried like a kid. And what's worse... although the character is fictional, the letter is real. A French soldier called Emile really wrote that letter and really was sentenced to death.
May every man who fought in WWI rest in peace and may there sacrifice not be in vain to this day and that there family remember them for what they fought for in life...
+vxYASxv This is just a sad scene...you don't have to play the game to understand that ...Emille is painted in such away that it makes him look tragic...along with the foreboding chains...and music...and the solique at the end...truly makes this a tragic scene. Even someone who hasn't played the game...can understand how terrible this is by listening to the dialogue...
that gamie isn't a normal game, that is somekind of tribute to our heroes no matter you are from France, England, Russia, Poland, Gremany or many other countries
I only ever cried 3 times at a piece of "entertainment" When Violet Evergarden was going through a emotional break down that nearly lead to her almost ending her own life....a painful reminder of when i heard that a man from my units (I was in the reserve's at the time) took there own lives. The Second and third was when i played these awesome games. Im not a platformer guy im more into shooters. But i like history...and these games made me cry at the end. And im glad these games get the recognition they deserve
_Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed._ _Never shall I forget that smoke._ _Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky._ _Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever._ _Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live._ _Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes._ _Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself._ _Never._ ~ Night by Elie Wiesel. ~ Holocaust Poem
We should not honour the fallen heroes by fighting the fight they tried to finish and to weep for them But to live the life that they weren’t able to live and remember them... Forever Listen to the song
war is fun in all games except this game. This game shows the real face of war with all its nakedness. The end was emotional, I wish people could live in peace all the time, this is an impossible thing, I hope a world war like this will not happen again.
The first time, I really had a few tears in my eyes. I saw this ending so many times ans still I never cryed until now. It's an dumb, but an true ending of a great game.
The game made me understand more about the history , suffering of those who fought for their pride . Best game ever. Never regret spending time for this masterpiece

For people that still says that videogames are violent, and they're not a type of art. Only this video can prove that videogames are more than a type of entertainment... This shit is so hard, i remembered when i was looking this gameplay and i'm still having goosebumps. Magic.
I'm a grown ass man and I just finished this game for the first time ever. This is the only game that I played so far that made me cry. No other game managed to do that and I have played a huge amount of games from various genres.
Karl B. I cried for this, red dead redemtion, joel and his daughter, lee from the walking dead, kenny from the the walking dead, nobel 6 from halo reach and dom from gears of war :(
Damn... I hate that Emile thinks that he has failed Karl... He went to war just to bring him back...:(
Yes, Emile thought Karl was dead even when Emile himself died, he didn't got the news that Karl was still alive

Every single one of them reacted to those shots, by either looking away or putting their hand on their face.

This game will ALWAYS prove that.
+KnightofDark Gaming My eyes close everytime I hear those shots, and I imagine Emile just falling over.
When i hear the shots,I close my eyes and look away, this ending made me cry a lot
What is worse is that his best friend arrived there, only to find out that Emilie was in fact one of the mutineers.
***** Yep, but he payed his lasting respect by taking off his hat.

Next to To the Moon - best game i have ever played. Pure beauty!
I think "Valiant Hearts" is better :) Will be second part of this game? (sorry for my English)

Gi Min Well, kate don't suicide in my game, and Rachel, It was emotional, but not enought to cry

Shame it gets so little attention by the gaming community. They'd give a award to big titles but not to a masterpiece like this.
There are very few works of art that can make me emotionally respond. Very few books, even fewer movies, and finally, a total of three video games, have ever made me cry.

Out of curiosity, what were the other two games?
MegaSparkster The Walking Dead, where Lee dies. And The Last of Us. I became very emotionally invested in that game, and it was one of the few that I actually bought and played instead of simply watching a walkthrough.
***** While that ending was awesome and amazing, I did not cry.

jeremy de zeeotter True ... He's so awesome :) He doesn't try to hide it too
Well when he was crying i was crying with him that's for sure
the part where he said "this is so sad" broke my heart
True :' -(
Yes it was :(
It was
...out of so many games this really made be cry I thought that some impacting scenes in COD Modern Warfare 2 were rough but this...this is next level
I don't care what people say. I love VALIANT HEARTS
I remember when I played it, I flinched when I heard the gunshot.
Everyone in the video either flinched, leaned away, or rubbed their face.
By far the absolute most touching ending in all of video game history. I've cried at this more than when my Grandpa who i was dearly close to died. That's how sad this game is! I love it and i'm so sad. You guys truly made the best example of how there are no winners in war.
i think cryaotic's reaction should be added too
Sadly he didn't have a face cam for it but I agree
Snowset thanks i didn't realize that
CC Shade
That was the first time I heard Ryan Cry...
Seriously....
2:11 - look at this man in right down corner (Rojo - with headphones). He destroyd his mobile phone! :D
xD
Grzegorz Nowak there the right down corner did not see the phone
upper than corner (men with headphones). He throw that on the floor.
ohi did not see the phone
but he did it :D i can give u title of main film
When I first reached the ending, I thought, once the officer calls for Emile, that I'd have to defend myself before the military court. Once the music began playing, I knew what would happen. I cried like a kid.
And what's worse... although the character is fictional, the letter is real. A French soldier called Emile really wrote that letter and really was sentenced to death.
Damn, this is the one game I've cried about. I've gotten fairly emotional at several games, but this is the only one I've literally cried at.
For everyone in WW1 and WW2 we will never forget what you have done for the world...
2019
May every man who fought in WWI rest in peace and may there sacrifice not be in vain to this day and that there family remember them for what they fought for in life...
I'am still remember this for 4 years and still cry until now
I've never even heard of this game and this video made me cry
Sorry but you don't have a reason to cry watching this video, you have to play the game to understand what is really going on...
+VxYASxV Gamer Some people are more emotional than others.
Jordan Heath I know, I'm ment if you play the game you will cry more. Sorry anyways.
+vxYASxv This is just a sad scene...you don't have to play the game to understand that
...Emille is painted in such away that it makes him look tragic...along with the foreboding chains...and music...and the solique at the end...truly makes this a tragic scene. Even someone who hasn't played the game...can understand how terrible this is by listening to the dialogue...
PheonixLeFey I know. I just ment if you play the game you will cry like a child
that gamie isn't a normal game, that is somekind of tribute to our heroes no matter you are from France, England, Russia, Poland, Gremany or many other countries
R.I.P. Emile Challion Born 1867. Died 1917. We will all remember your sacrifice for your country. We salute you always T^T
I cry each time I see this, each time as impact filled as the first time when I finished the game
"You're loving papa, always," are the most saddest words in the game "Valiant Hearts:The Great War"
_Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed._
_Never shall I forget that smoke._
_Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky._
_Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith for ever._
_Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live._
_Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes._
_Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself._
_Never._

You must be depressed as fuck dude. Clannad Nagisa and Tomoya. And this game?! Well we have same tastes.

i didn't cry nor shed a tear... but died inside.

I lost my father so to hear that ..... broke my heart in a million pieces :(
We should not honour the fallen heroes by fighting the fight they tried to finish and to weep for them
But to live the life that they weren’t able to live and remember them... Forever
Listen to the song
More like this Ubi... more like this.
war is fun in all games except this game. This game shows the real face of war with all its nakedness. The end was emotional, I wish people could live in peace all the time, this is an impossible thing, I hope a world war like this will not happen again.
True
this game was actually amazing! I'm gonna play it again after this many years :)
What fucking sacrifice, though?! That's what makes this ending even more upsetting. World War One was for absolutely nothing.
I remember crying when I got to this part in the game.
I could have taken out a fire with my tears
When I got to the ending I was crying for 20 minutes straight. After when I heard the gunshots and the body fell I was just leaking tears.😭😭
Top 2 video game saddest death
1. Valiant Hearts (Emile)
2. The Walking Death (Lee)
That was a moment to cry about.
Yoan, thanks for the fantastic game! Hope to see a lot of stuff like it from your new venture.
The first time, I really had a few tears in my eyes. I saw this ending so many times ans still I never cryed until now. It's an dumb, but an true ending of a great game.
Aún hoy lloro cada vez que veo esta escena, uno de los juegos más bellos que he jugado y con el que logré conectarme con cada uno de los personajes.
2:12 Rojo ,, KURWA nie teraz JEB ! xD "
x L e i s T x leze :D
The game made me understand more about the history , suffering of those who fought for their pride . Best game ever. Never regret spending time for this masterpiece
2:15 - I love, how Rojo throw his phone :D
+MrKapusta yeah
The ending of that game...it can make a full grown man cry.
This game came with onions...
Enough to make an grown man cry
Brilliant game, just brilliant....
“If you will not serve in combat then you will serve on the firing line”
"Dearest Marie
As the war ends for me, I have no regrets I've Seen too much Horror.
I hope fate has been more merciful to you.
Our time on earth is brief, and mine has been filled with so much joy, that i can only be thankful for how much I've been blessed.
Most specially for the wonder you brought into my life.
This letter is my last. ...War makes men mad.
I know my sacrifice has not been in vain.
I fought for my country and my liberty,
My honour is assured.
Since it is the will of God to separate us on Earth, I hope we we'll meet again in heaven.
Keep me in your prayers.
Your loving papa,
Always."
‘I’ve seen too much horror…’
And then the tricolour hanging above his walk. A testimony to how their countries failed their brethren
For people that still says that videogames are violent, and they're not a type of art. Only this video can prove that videogames are more than a type of entertainment... This shit is so hard, i remembered when i was looking this gameplay and i'm still having goosebumps. Magic.
Dang it, I've watched the ending like 10 times now and it still makes me sad....
I'm a grown ass man and I just finished this game for the first time ever. This is the only game that I played so far that made me cry. No other game managed to do that and I have played a huge amount of games from various genres.
The only times I've cried playing games is when Joel's daughter got killed and this.
Oh and Red Dead Redemption.
Karl B. I cried for this, red dead redemtion, joel and his daughter, lee from the walking dead, kenny from the the walking dead, nobel 6 from halo reach and dom from gears of war :(
100000% agreed the last of us destroyed me emotionally and so did this
Karl B. I cried at: the walking dead and the last of us dlc left behind
PixelatedKarl yup, same here
the only game I really cried not a little tear or something but straight up cried
Do your worst Valiant Hearts, because you will always make me cry...
I think the part that always got to me was the gut punch of those last few sentences. "Keep me in your prayers. Your loving papa. Always."
Every time I watch this ending I start to cry
That's how this ending is sad
