I’m Japanese and the interpreter absolutely MISinteroreted Shohei’s statement. It was interpreted as “I was able to talk to the fan” but he never said that. He said that the “team was able to talk to the fan to get the ball”. So Shohei did not lie.
I heard him say "kanojo to hanashite"...one of the difficulties of Japanese-English translation is the omission of pronouns in spoken sentences...e.g. he did not say "boku wa kanojo to hanashite"...obviously you understood him completely so I believe it is true that he was not referring to himself that he spoke to her...
The proper translation is something like “We got contact with the fan who got the ball, and it was kindly returned to us.” instead of “I was able to talk to the fan, was able to get it back.” since Ohtani didn’t mention who talked to the fan due to the nature of Japanese language.
I'm a Japanese. Ohtani stated in Japanese, "Fan no hito to hanashite itadakeru to iukotodattanode". That could mean either "(I heard that they) would talk to the fan and (they said) she could give it" or "( I ) talked to the fan, and (she said) that she was able to give it". It is common that the subjects are often omitted in the Japanese conversation. However, the translator did not check with Ohtani which he meant to say that and translated "I was able to talk to the fan and was able to get it back...". I know that translation job is not that easy especially for the famous athlete like Ohtani, so I don't blame the translator regardless of which Ohtani meant to say. 通訳は大谷さんにどちらの意味で言ったのか確認せずに「私がファンと話した」と翻訳していますが、そもそも通訳という仕事は難しいですし、とくに大谷選手のような大物の通訳には責任と重圧がある大仕事ですので大谷選手の真意がどちらだったにせよ翻訳者を責めるつもりはありません。球団の対応はちょっとマズかったと思いますが、今回の問題が双方にとってハッピーなエンディングになることを願っています。
Miguel Rojas - Hey what about me. I have 2 home runs! 😅 I’ll give Rojas credit. He’s making left handed pitchers pay. 👍 Congrats to Ohtani. The way the Dodgers are hitting, they should have 8 runs not 5. Too many solo runs and their average is down with men on base. On the flip side, it’s amazing how when the Dodgers pitching finally allow some men on base then the opposition cashes in. These above issues are masked when the team is winning.
After the game, Otani explained about the ball, saying, "I was told that I could go back and talk to the fans and get it."Interpreter Will Iaton said, "I was able to talk to the fan. And I was able to get it back."

Maybe he should learn english or just not do interviews at this time. I think the slight misinterpretation could be forgiven, the Dodgers downright black mailing and bullying of the fan should be the bigger highlight in my opinion.
Is this a correct translation? That he was able to talk to the fan that caught the ball? Because I’m not sure if that’s true, shes claiming that she was pressured to give the ball back and that speaking/meeting to shohei wasn’t possible
No. Ohtani meant “ Someone talked to the fan.” He never said he talked the fan. As he omitted the subject in his sentence like Japanese always do, the translation was done wrongly. I am gusessing he wanted to say, “ After I went back to the locker room, I was told that someone from the team talked to the fan and the fan kindly decided to give me the ball and I appreciate it very much since it is a special ball for me.”
I'm commenting as a Japanese person. When we see the scene where Shohei is answering about the homerun ball, we hear he met the fan. Will (translator) is not wrong, and I think he also thought that Shohei met the fan, so Will used "I" as the subject. Japanese has a culture where people can understand each other by inferring things even without a subject, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. I hope the day will come soon when Shohei can answer interviews without an interpreter.
I wouldn't have let go of the ball for less than 50k cash, pic and signed jersey. Don't want to be a dick to him but 50k means more to me than to him. I'm sure I would get massive offers in an auction but I would definitely give Ohtani the first opportunity to get ball back.

I tried to think of any American players who have/had played in the Japanese professional baseball league for five years who could answer questions in Japanese. Hmmm…how the heck there seems to be no one!
He spends all his time on baseball?
He can speak english but not fluently, he want's to communicate accurately and not having trolls like your or the media misinterpreting his words.
He was able to win MVP twice even though he couldn't speak simple English.
He's been in the league over 5 years.
Same way you can't speak sense when you've been on UA-cam for what I presume to be almost that amount of time too.
