Well Ryan watching this vid made me feel a little better about my lawn. We've had a dry summer and it's reduced my usual lush, green lawn to a patchy mess. It's like a punch in the gut, after investing so much time and effort. I take satisfaction in seeing a nice green lawn after working on it, it's cathartic. I take it personally when my lawn doesn't respond. Have a great day Ryan.
Nice to see I’m not alone in fighting the good fight against heat stress/fungus 😅 that front Rye is looking amazing. My lawn wants to be like your lawn when it grows up 😂
I got my mini reno completed Sept 1st to 3rd. KBG, PRG and CRF. I am irrigating can't wait for the results. Always great to see another Ryan lawn video.
When you have City water it can break the bank watering your grass. I have not seen any rain now in over a month. Just watering enough to keep grass a live. 😊
I started a lawn from Scott’s heat tolerant mix in a dry climate in Colorado three years ago. It has established well, but first year had issue with weeds and each year after brown spots. I did used Scott’s fungicide last year when I noticed this and it helped. this year on the other side of the yard no fungicide and has spread severely but I think it’s done. I think wildlife spreads the fungus. I have tried to limit dethatching about once a week but it’s by hand; looking into a good electric one before summer really kicks in to clean it up the best I can. I also used Pennington fertilizer pellets the past two year early spring along with switching off between ironite and lime and calcium. The soil is sandy and gets hard packed when dry. Recently I put revive down on it. Stumbled on this video down the lawn care rabbit hole now I will continue on my landscaping quest.
I did a pure kbg Reno last fall and I definitely applied too much seed since I was used to the tall fescue rate. It established pretty quick for blue but now I’m paying for it with what I think is fungus. Too thick to dry out and I only water deep twice a week. Hoping that dethatch and aerate this weekend without overseeding it will help thin it out. Doing Pangea rye on the parkway/curbside grass though since dog piss has mangled it lol. Excited to dip into the rye game.
After Pythium took out half of my fescue lawn a few years ago I always keep mefenoxam on hand and watch the lawn like hawk. I keep a very close eye on weather conditions and diseased present during those conditions so I can try and treat preventatively for those
Regarding your shady area, I’ve mentioned it before, but you should really look into getting some Poa Supina for some shade testing. I’m in Europe and used Wolf brand sun and shade mix the last few years after trying other brands. It only had 3% Supina in it and my HEAVILY shaded yard is doing gang busters. It is thick and dense and where the Supina is taking over, traffic isn’t a problem. Another brand I used had lots of fine fescue in it and for a while that renovated area of lawn was doing well but now it’s thinning. Worst areas in my lawn are the areas that get near full day sun, which is a minimal section. Just ordered a sun/shade mix that has 10% Poa Supina in it to over seed the lawn after a dethatching and some repairs to areas that had some structures removed. I really enjoy the expanded content you can provide at your current property. Great seeing the cool season grasses in various states of care or non-care and seeing the results. As a former mid-westerner from across the Mississippi, I do not miss those hot and humid summers you are enduring. Thanks for all the education you provide Ryan
hi ryan Im from Turkey. I usually fertilize the lawn with backpack sprayer. In my country , no granular spesific grass fertilizer such as PGF. and What ım using is soluble 20-20-20 or triple 18. What do you recommend me when ım using pump sprayer with fertilizer. For example if My lawn need 3 kg of nitrogen. Should I split it 1kg-1kg-1kg per backpack sprayer, or ı should mix all of it. Thanks.
My lawn has a fungus currently, I applied hose end fungicide few days ago but was planning an over seed in a few days. Will seeding into this existing but treated fungus kill my new grass?
I know your feeling. New to PRG did a full front and back yard of your PRG looked gorgeous in spring. Northeast got hammered with water in spring and got hit with fungus. I basically turned my sprinklers off all season and been riding it manually. I did a dethatch mid summer and cleared up some of the moisture retention. But we just got hit with 2-3 days of clouds and heavy rains some cool overnight weather. Walked outside 2 days ago to see what looks to be pythium everywhere. Now I'm pondering myself to spray everything with Stergo MX or just hold off. Just don't see how I can hold off when I seed and water it's sure to rear its nasty head again.
My ryegrass has taken a beating these last few weeks. Same situation fungus and heat stress. Fescue in the front yard however has taken the heat without a problem though. It's interesting how different grasses react. Today was our first day in weeks we haven't broke 100°
Ryan, thank you so much for sharing! I have your company's Rye Grass here in Pittsburgh, PA. While parts of my lawn look great, this season I have had unprecedented problems with weeds and especially fungus: top third of blades turned dark gray or almost black in a circle about a month or more ago, and now I have patches of brown (likely dead) grass, even after applications of Scott's Disease X. Do you happen to have any advice on what kind of fugus I had and how else I can treat it or tell if the fungus has died before I do my overseed in 1-2 weeks?
My front of PRG has started doing the same after the high 90s and 100 week we had last week. Think it's OK to hit it with my scheduled bi-weekly summer Equalizorr to help give it a boost as we go into cooler daytime temps? Planning on a dethatch and topdressing in the next few weeks so I don't want it to grow too fast.
Always enjoy the Sunday video drop. 🌞🌱☕️. Same problems here in Wisconsin, but looking forward to (hopefully) a great fall growing season 🍁. By the way, your spring seeding looks amazing 👍
I wonder if your neighbors corn has any grey leaf spot in it or any other disease? And since those plots are closest to the corn.... It can start around the 4th of July for future reference. I've thought the corn has looked pretty healthy this year but I've stayed out of mine for fear of counting the chickens before they hatch.
I’m in the exact same boat. Everything is looking like it’s gonna croak. Have the front killed waiting to seed, but it’s gonna be near 100 after this coming week. Not sure when I’ll be able to seed
Hey Ryan have you looked into Blue Grama? I know you've been trying Buffalo grass, but I believe Blue Grama is actually a more natural fit for your area. Been researching more native grasses, I hope to see more on your channel! Btw, apparently buffalo grass takes a very long time to fully establish so don't give up on it.
I don't see how watering in the evening is bad. Mother nature makes It rain at night sometimes, but I'm not a professional. It's probably not good to overwater and have puddles sitting there constantly that would drown the grass or cause disease. If anything watering in the middle of the day seems like a waste cause it all evaporates and dries up quick. Personally I water in the morning. I also was under the assumption your supposed to mix a couple types of grass not just have say bluegrass only because it's more susceptible to pests and disease. Would like to hear your opinion on that. My yard is a mix 80% turf type tall fescue and 20% bluegrass. And one section is rye & bluegrass.
You've talked about Dormant seeding in the past, but I'm not sure you've done testing. Why not try out Dormant seeding that large grassless area you've been working? Could be a cool experiment and would give you some late/early season content.
That's a lot of money to risk on the weather not cooperating and having seed go to waste. I'll have to see how the early fall is looking or the whole project may get postponed
The morgan wallen hair is working for ya lol side note. Have you attempted to work with creeping bentgrass? I tried planting in 10 days ago and I haven't seen germination.
Picked up some of your perenial ryegrass yesterday. Going to try and overseed my backyard this fall and get the bent grass worked out. Ive got a different ryegrass im going to try and put in the front. Should i air rate before i do this or scarafi up the yard. Im already planning on using the straw blankets to help with someone of the troubled spots.
Ryan, do u think it may have been a good idea to wait a little longer to remove the straw blanket a little later on the KBG? I ask because I am at the point where I am considering removing mine and just wanted to get your thoughts.
In my situation it was the right time because I needed things to dry out overnight with warm and humid weather. They could probably stay on a little longer if that isn't an issue for you.
@@ryanknorrlawncare makes total sense now. I won't have that issue in Denver since it's always dry and hot. Might just wait a few extra days. Thanks for the info!
Hey Ryan. Recently seeded with your Elite Shade blend. Would you recommend running the fine fescue program or would fine fescue be fine with higher nitrogen applications that KBD and Perianal Rye need?
In the fall sometimes night temperatures matter almost as much as day temperatures. If you’re in the 70-80s at night there is no recovery from the damage taken over the day. Days are still 90-100 in WA but nights are 55-65. Since beginning of August, my scalp and detach scars have healed and I’m waiting another couple weeks to detach again since it’s already so thick. The one good thing about living in a desert with less than 10 inches of rain each year is that I get to control the water. The bad thing about living in the desert is I need to control the water with no irrigation 😂 I will say though drought is way easier to fix than fungus.
Now you’re into the meat of real issues… good stuff… I’ve been Fighting fungus among us for some time now..!! Found out a Boat load of info.. the one about spores blowing on the wind.. , Or small animals carrying spores.. I’m just thinking wow..!! Oh and trees dropping leave’s… 😮 I’ve seen it by me.. disease… I’m hoping that your temperature and droughts the culprit… Lots of luck
That sucks. Did you you not treat the large rye plot? I know mefenoxam is best to treat pythium, but I didn’t want to pay for it when I can just use what I have in Azoxy to prevent & hopefully get my seedlings through this heat in central Ohio.
I have so much turf to cover I can't treat everything so most of it is left to proper irrigation and hoping we aren't as warm overnight as we were last week. You win some and lose some but it's all fixable!
Tall Fescue does, but most people don't like it. Kentucky Bluegrass may be the best option. There are even some newer KBG varieties that are less thirsty, with lower water requirements.
Tall fescue is no savior either. Very prone to disease issues in a humid climate like ours. If you didn't care about looks I'd let bluegrass go dormant during the heat however I had it at my old house and even that has a breaking point where I saw some summer die off from drought.
Jonathan Green Black Beauty original tall fescue has done great for me. Survived a hot drought this spring and is now holding its own with some fungus. Just keep it tall and feed the soil.
Let me know when you have 59 100+ days and 15 105+ days.......You are really lucky to have well water and/or no restrictions. The restrictions here are harsh for growing grass.
Is that fungus or is that the result of a shallow root system during hi heat and stress? That small plug seemed to not come out easy for a shallow sample

Any recommendations on getting rid of Veldtgrass? The previous home owner had it growing in the middle of the lawn and it just looks horrible!
I had real good results stopping pythium with Celoxid, also rotating with Azoxystrobin and Propiconazole
Goin through the same thing here in Colorado. Been a cool summer until recently.
