The concert performance at Montreux for the 1974 set (disc 2) was recorded on June 30, 1974. One of the songs played was "Bulbs", which was released as the single on the album Veedon Fleece. Three of the songs, "Twilight Zone", "Foggy Mountain Top" and "Naked in the Jungle", would not be officially released by Morrison until his 1998 compilation of outtakes, The Philosopher's Stone. Three others, "I Like It Like That", "Swiss Cheese" and "Heathrow Shuffle" were never officially released except on this DVD. All of the songs, except for "Street Choir", were unfamiliar to the audience, who were expecting his more recognizable songs and according to Clinton Heylin, in Montreux "a familiar conflict arose between his own thirst for spontaneity and an audience's preference for being eased into any new musical progression." Less than a year later, Morrison would say that as soon as "you are committed to a series of concerts you lose all spontaneity. It's not jazz any more. The reason I first got into music and the reason I was then doing it were conflicting. It was such a paradox." During the concert but not shown on the DVD, Morrison angrily confronted a woman heckler who said he didn't know how to play the blues Morrison's stripped-down band was assembled when he arrived at Montreux, with the help of festival manager Claude Nobs. Drummer Dallas Taylor from Crosby, Stills and Nash, British keyboardist Pete Wingfield and Jerome Rimson, bass player from Detroit, Michigan rounded out the quartet, with Morrison contributing vocals, saxophone, guitar and harmonica. It was a lean band without electric guitar, horns or strings

It’s the magnificent way he delivers; it’s not simply melody and lyrics but how he sings. I mean, already love his voice and then he does as only he can. My words here fail me but I’m sure someone here will understand what I’m saying. Saw him live in ‘74.

I love Dallas's playing. I have been inspired my many drummers. Jim Capaldi among them, but Dallas merges with the music. He becomes integral and organic in such a passionate and loving way. I will miss him. I remember how engaged he helped CSN feel on their first two albums. Blew my mind. I have enjoyed drumming myself for over 55 years and I stop the world when Dallas is on the kit.

Van is a Master of being able to freeze, a most painful heartfelt piece of his life and BRING us so DEEPLY into that moment in time , that we are RIGHT there with him, you can almost feel the BEATS of his HEART, his BREATH, his SOUL,
as he relives it himself: " WHY did you leave AMERICA? " ( Left me so alone when I needed you most, )
    He takes us,
    with just one lyric ,
    along side him,
in his sense of loss and deep broken heartedness ( "WHY DID YOU LET ME DOWN? ) his tone is always, so soft, asking for an answer, which he knows there is only one, even with his new crystal ball, he can't save her now, it's a moment in life that's.past, "
"I just can't take you back now" , it's just " NOT my job at all ") , when you come back, in better times, ( we know the writings on the wall.)
Such clarity of the moments we all have had " when we were drowning and were left, abandoned , til better times come round, NOW you're back? not even a mystic revelation (a brand new cystal ball) will ever make that right, so go, again, he says softly. " its just not my trouble at all". He takes us there, with him again, and again, and again. HE is a MASTER óf all of the beauty and painful experiences,. "THAT'S life, that's what the people say, you're riding high in April , shot down in May!
    - Van Morrison/ Frank Sinatra

This really is one of Van's great songs. And he has quite a few good ones.
Hard to believe at this point in his career he was putting out 2 albums per year of stuff like this. Of course he talks about this as the tyranny of Warner Bros, and it was, but a lot of good stuff came out of it.

C Johnson I thought I was the only one who noticed how many great songs/albums Van the Man put out in succession. By 1974 he’d reached the top tear of musical superstar. The woman should have been flogged but I’m betting Van verbally flogged her as he’s been known to do. There’s audio video of someone requesting a certain song and Van tells him to shut his damn mouth. Love it

WB rushing Van to hastily just churn out music... And instead of a disastrous outcome, here comes the man and gifts the world with a collection of tunes, that are at the very least fine... and in many cases divine, making one literally cry, like this one. How did he even do that?

Van the Man has a spine. I get a kick out of his eccentricities. I just chuckle at some of his wit! I know he’s fun to be around! Lol. Love Van so much! His wit is readily revealed through his lyrics. 💚🎶🍀

    Street choir
Sing me the song for the new day
    Don't make it long
And remember to sing it the old way
    Let it all out
Let your voice ring in the street, now
    My fun
Shall be this one to complete, now
    Why did you leave America?
Why did you let me down?
And now that things seem better off
    Why do you come around?
You know I just can't see you, now
    (See you now)
In a-my, in a-my, new world crystal ball
You know I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)
That's a-not my job at all
    Move it on up
Move it on up by the window
    Move it on
    A magnificent flow
Lord, let it all grow in the moonglow
    I'll take the wine
I'll take the wine with the gravy
    I'll ask you the time
And just send the bill, to my baby
    Why did you leave America?
Why did you let me down?
And now that things seem better off
    Why do you come around?
You know I just can't see you, now
    (See you now)
    In a-my, in a-my, in a-my
    New world crystal ball
You know I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)
That's a-not my job at all
    Why did you leave America?
Why did you let me down?
And now that things seem better off
    Why do you come around?
You know I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)
    In a-my, in a-my, in a-my
    New world crystal ball
You know, you know, you know
I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)
That's not my job at all
You know, you know, you know
I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)
That's not my job at all
You know, you know, you know
I just can't free you, now
    (Free you now)

Apparently they threw the band together at the last second. Great band with Van as always.

My Celtic 1st cousin Van looking a little like the great John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful here. Van the Belfast man with a 1000 brilliant songs and stories that he has continued to change around to many different styles and yes yet still they come out as brilliant songs. Is is it OK if I have the bass player, drummer and singing guitar in my band please
