  • In 2023 DxO completed a six year project to rewrite the Nik Collection from the ground up. Based on the usual 12 month release cycle we may be expecting a new version of the leading collection of photo processing presets this year.
In terms of the current platform, its probably a good time to re-evaluate the capabilities of this software because many people, including me came to it more than ten years ago and have a view rightly or wrongly that it is mainly about finishing photos.
In actual fact, it is much more than that and this series aims to demonstrate how the Nik Collection integrates tightly with Lightroom and Photoshop, Affinity as well, it's advanced capabilities making it a viable component of a layer based workflow for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

Looking forward to the rest of this series. I have PL7 and Nik Collection (and Affinity which I hardly use now) and I tend to do basic stuff in PL7 and the go to Nik, straight to Pro Contrast and the work from there. BTW I am a rank amateur who does photography and videos as a hobby but as with everything I want to do the best I possibly can.

Thanks! I’m enjoying making this series. I’ve been using Pro Contrast as a finishing touch for years. I found there’s more to these tools than meets the eye. If you like Color Efex then you’ll love Viveza which is the next video (Tuesday 4pm).

I am trying to wrap my head around DXO products (and looking forward to your NIK collection videos). The one thing that I don't really get is the overlaping functionalities. Like what is the difference between Dxo Viewoint and NIK Perspective. On the DXO site I've read that they have the same features - but it is not hlping me to decide which software I should buy so that I don't spend money on redundancies... Maybe shedding light on this would make a great topic for a video ... :D Thank you for the great videos.

The short answer is if you are using DxO PhotoLab Elite then buy ViewPoint as it will give you extra functionality integrated within PhotoLab. It is functionally identical to Perspective. If you are using Lightroom/Photoshop then buy the Nik Collection. It's not true of all cases at all times, but broadly, if you are a PhotoLab user then Nik Collection is a destination, if you are an Adobe user then it is better integrated with the workflow. Nik Collection started life as a plugin for Adobe products before DxO bought it. It makes sense to have it available from PhotoLab because Silver Efex, Color Efex, Viveza offer significant features and opportunities that you can't easily realise in PhotoLab alone. Hope this hasn't made matters worse!
