This was an excellent discussion and I want to thank Peter for being willing to discuss it and publicly process the criticism. J.F. phrased it so respectfully, and I think he was dead-on in relating it to performance--because the podcast is both casual conversation AND performance! Like Peter, if I'm feeling exuberant or passionate or upset, I have found myself interrupting others, and I've made a conscious decision to pay attention and let others finish their thoughts. I think it makes me a better listener and a better colleague. To be clear, Adam is no shrinking violet and I love the playful dynamic between the two of you. But making a conscious choice to be a better listener is never the wrong choice.
Please don't change a thing, the banter you two have is the main reason I watch you. If you weren't musicians, you'd have been a comedy duo. Your 'jazz explained is a just a massive bonus.
I also love the banter. I wouldn't take the interruption comment too too seriusly, part of the fun is back-and-forth banter, and when you have that, there will be some interruptions. It's ok. It is acceptable, it's how real conversations proceed, imo.

You guys are fine. You have a dynamic and energy that works and part of that is centered around quick witted interjections (going both ways). Please don't change that. We don't need to make jazz more academic than is already done in most circles.
I very clearly remember the first You'll Hear It episode I watched, because Peter was constantly interrupting Adam. I thought, jeez, is every episode going to be like this? I really considered not watching anymore. But I'm glad I kept watching. Not every episode was like that. It's only rare times where it becomes an issue in my opinion. The banter has kept me inspired to practice hundreds of times, so I'm very grateful for the podcast.
Learning how to have a conversation for other to people listen to takes a little time. It’s not natural.
Thanks to you both for sharing J.F's feedback. Where social media/UA-cam is concerned, you're dealing with such a critical mass of viewers/listeners that it's impossible to "please" everyone. And with that critical mass comes greater levels of complexity: it's good for ALL of us to consider our own context and question whether we're projecting onto others. We can easily forget to look at Adam and Peter's ACTUAL dynamic and inadvertently try to impose our own criticisms onto what we "perceive" to be there. After hearing Adam's response regarding their dynamic, it does appear to simply be their natural back-and-forth. Not to dismiss J.F's opinion or make him "wrong", but we all might want to consider our own thinking and "preferences" a little deeper. Just because we perceive something as being a certain way, does not make it so. It might be, because of our own preferences and history that we react to that "perception", rather than allowing it to be what it is. Whew!....in other words, IMO, "If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it" and just because someone else says "it's broke", doesn't mean it is. Keep up the great work you guys.😁✌
Keeping a conversation/podcast interesting isn’t easy and I personally like the give-and-take between u 2! It’s a rare person who can put thoughts into beautifully constructed sentences every single time - and having another person chime in with small brushstrokes to improve the thoughts/concepts is a good thing. It’s all about the camaraderie between you guys in pursuing a common goal - you’re excited about what you do and it’s appreciated (by me).
I came to listen to this episode after reading about it, as I'm subscribed to Open Studio's various mailing lists (btw I'm a new OS student!). I guess the intro kind of gave it away, but in any case I started browsing the comment section as I was listening, and suddenly I found myself thinking, "Why does Adam get interrupted every couple seconds? I can't make out what he's trying to say..."
I do think it's possible to have banter and liveliness without minimal interjection or interruption. I listen to many different kinds of podcasts, and for the podcasts with multiple hosts, the talking host is usually able to finish their thought before another host begins. Anyway, as a first-time listener I did find the interruptions to be a bit too much, but in any case, I appreciate Peter sharing JF's feedback with us and even asking for more comments. I do hope this won't be the last time I listen to this podcast!
Side note: For both this podcast episode and Peter's course on essential etudes, I often found his speaking to be like a long run-on sentence with no punctuation, as if he's trying to finish one thought and get to the next thought as soon as possible with few or no pauses. I had to replay parts of the lesson many many times because there would be instances where Peter interrupts his own line of thought to give examples or to give comments, and it was just super hard for me to keep up. I tried looking for the playback speed option in OS, but it's not available (I actually changed the playback speed in this episode in order to continue listening). It's possible to get used to this style of speaking and I know many people who talk this way, but my brain does get tired after a while, especially when I'm trying to pick up new information at the same time.
When another musician I'm playing with has criticism about something specific I'm doing, I really try to work on that thing- that happens all the time, and I'll admit, is something that can bubble up some defensiveness. However, I posted a UA-cam video of my playing the other day, and I got a comment that boiled my blood and sent me into a rage. it was something like "that was almost perfect, but you just need to keep working on it and make it a little smoother." I replied with like "that was almost a constructive comment that proved to everyone you know what you're talking about, but we can all see that you play the UA-cam comments section comments more than any instrument."
The reality is, that commenter was correct- I do need to get it "smoother", however, that is what I've been working on doing since day one of learning that piece, and I am still practicing it to get it "smoother" now. He might as well say, "that was pretty good, but you could do it better". What kind of criticism is that?! I know I could do it better! I know I could play it "smoother"! I had to delete the whole thread because he came back qualifying that he has been playing for over 30 years, and that I'm no "Chet Atkins or Joe Pass". I know!! I'm not claiming to be Chet Atkins or Joe Pass! I'm practicing for a corporate gig to play solo jazz guitar in the background while people ignore me. I have 100 subscribers! I'm working on it- and a big part of working on it is putting yourself out there I think. Certain criticism for me can really ruin my day and make me feel so small. Maybe it goes back to my childhood where I would make a 96% on a test and all my mom would talk about is what I could do to make 100% on the next one, and then when I did make a 100%, the whole issue was dropped so we could all focus on something else I'm not doing perfectly.
No one wants to be interrupted when they're talking, but clearly from your perspective, thats not at all what either of you were concerned about. And taking your poll, Peter- I've never had a thought that either of you were interrupting each other at all. EVERYTHING IS GOOD. Your videos are fun, helpful, inspiring, and amazing! The human follies and foibles are great. I love it that you don't correct the mistakes on the video. This has revolutionized my life. I watch. a video. every morning while I have a cuppa, then practice! Speaking to Adam because I'm more at the beginning level for your basic courses - they help me realize what/why I learned things wrong way back in time, and what to do now about it. THANKS!!!

Yeah, Peter interjects ALL the time, that's true. Every once in a while, maybe it's too much, but... it would be funny if neither if you was allowed to do that at all, with a referee to officiate. It would end up with all the charm of a police interrogation🤣
TBC, IMO "every once in a while it's a little too quick" isn't worth messing with the sauce. Seriously, you'd remove all the charisma from the show if you tried to be somebody else.
I love how you comment back and forth on the same sentence... interplay. It can be more boring when people are worried about taking turns . In general, I'm always asking for CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. But hardly anyone is willing to give it, they prefer just to give me compliments. People can learn more with criticism, I'll continue to ask, and give it out

I have to say you two are great and I learned loads from both of you. I have seen Peter live a few times with McBride and he just such a good piano player with loads of tools in his tool box. I look forward to seeing Adam live at some point if he comes to London but he is a gifted teacher and great at getting complex topics across. Bob Daboo didn't respond well to my comment about his extended fingering in a teaching video one time but that's.cool. He is a good bass player but I think he could have handled it better. Anyway, onward and upward and keep up the good work.

You're both a rowdy duo. I enjoy the banter. Keep going. If it bothers you, mute the mic but you may take away the insane dynamic you've got! It's called "interactive" communication for a reason!
I think you have really solid chemistry together and, maybe counter-intuitively, I think the chemistry arises precisely BECAUSE you have slightly competing dynamics. Right? Mix milk with milk, you just have more milk. Mix milk with chocolate, and you have a treat! (unsure which one of you is milk and which is chocolate lol)
Re the interuptions, you could try more stereo separation of your voices so folks can replay with just one side in a earphone, as necessary. You could use the Japanese method, which is to nod a lot after you finish a statement, then the other speakers don't interrupt each other, without having to say anything.
Hehe, great pod. Constructive critiscism makes us grow when delivered and taken in a constructive way. Must say it’s great fun to see Adam being more grounded while Peter is spinning off in all kinds of directions in your conversations. What was the subject of the episode again…😂 Maybe thats what the pipe was about….
I suspect Peter is more extroverted than Adam, and therefore might tend to speak more and jump in on Adams train of thought (Wich is not always a bad thing by the way). It's just something to keep an eye/ear on. I still love the pod overall. I learn a lot from both of you :)
Constructive criticism is like a sound guy telling a singer I was playing with to “sound less like a weasel” during sound check. Oof.

You guys suck! Not. But honestly, I haven't noticed Peter interrupting in a bad way and I'm usually pretty aware of these things. There's a difference between cooperative interjections and hijacking the conversation. Adam's impersonation of people from certain parts of Europe was pretty spot on and made me laugh out loud, being a mid-Atlantic European myself.

Criticism from a stranger is fine. Constructive criticism on the other hand might be wildly inappropriate. I think of the anecdote that when Rachmaninov played a memorial Scriabin recital in 1915, the young Prokofiev (who he never met before) came in the dressing room after the concert to tell him he played Scriabin pretty good. Rachmaninov was furious : how dare that boy come in to my dressing room to tell me that I play Scriabin pretty good....

Peter interrupts less than he might. Peter takes notes so that he can provide his ideas when it is appropriate. He doesn’t jump in at his first reaction.
Great video! I'm all for constructive criticism, with one caveat: You have to consider the source. Is the criticism coming from someone who has at least some knowledge of your craft? That makes a difference, to me at least.
The Paul Motion doc had a great scene at The Village Vanguard: the audience member went to the green room after the show and told Motion, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano that they didn't play well, and that it was a bad show. That's not constructive. Motion, of course, told the guy to drop dead. 😅
