How To Throw A Big Cast Net The Easy Way

  • Want to discover the simple steps to throwing a 10-foot cast net with the least amount of effort? Then check out this cast net method called "The Triple Load."
I believe it is the easiest way to throw a big cast net (Chasten Whitfield, the girl with the pink cast net, is a small girl and can throw a heavy 10ft cast net pretty easy using this method). It is also the method that she teaches young boys and girls to use while at fishing expos.
To see the full cast net blog on Salt Strong, click here:
    www.saltstrong.com/fishing-ti...
Here are a few things you will learn in this cast net tutorial:
    1) The best way to hold a 10-foot cast net
    2) How to properly throw a 10-foot cast net
    3) How to fix any cast net throwing mistakes (we do this by putting colored tape around the net to see which pieces are causing the issues)
Here are a few things we discovered in terms of which part of the load controls which potential problem areas of the cast net throw:
The far left to center section is controlled by your back hand
The front right to forward right section is controlled by your leading hand
The front left to mid-distance left is controlled by your back or shoulder

Sometime in future cast net videos you guys may want to mention advantages to carrying several different sized nets aside from the obvious reasons everyone talks about. I always sling a 10 or 12 foot early in the morning, until about 8am or so but some days you don't always catch the bait early and it pays to have an 8 footer in the boat for when the bait starts to get shy and stays out at a distance from the boat. Seems like most people don't realize that little tip but being able to load the smaller net faster and sling it to the end of the rope has saved me on many occasions.

Thanks for sharing the video. I love to fish artificial bait as I wade fish the grass flats in St. Pete. I have been doing this since last December but it seems the bite has slowed on the artificial baits so I am just starting to learn to catch live bait. I look forward to learning this technique as I throw my new 6" net. Thanks again for your help.

I used to live in the tropics, Far North Queensland, and you definitely DO NOT want to put nets over your shoulder there. Quite aside from the fact that you get soaking wet after the first throw, nets up there can come back with tiny deadly jellyfish stuck in them, as well as very small catfish which have extremely painful, barbed spines on them. Yes, you can inspect your net minutely after each cast, but who has the time to do that? I generally fished at night, under the lights from a railway bridge, because I worked during the day and it was too hot anyway. You simply couldn't see every little nasty in the net. I used to walk some distance to find areas to cast, and the net would bang against my legs (in shorts) as I did so. I missed a couple of those nasty little catfish, and it was really painful.

good stuff! But, I wonder if she'd do just as well as far as the size of the final pancake with an 8 ft net as it will be lighter and easier for her to throw and may get a true pancake with full opening which could equal the size of her 10' final opening? I'm guessing this is probably 1.5lbs/ft. If so, it would be 13% lighter in weight. I'm not sure if that would be enough of a difference but very curious about the result of that experiment. For someone who is stronger, definitely, the 10' net would yield best result as long as you have a good throw. Just curious for someone who is smaller, like her.

I throw an 8 footer with the weights split in half in one hand. I think I could do the 10 footer the same way. But this looks like a great method for smaller people. Great throw little miss, if you would have been on top of bait you would have cleaned them out.
