Very challenging...Hope this video helps!! 🙏🙏🙏
Great video - thanks for sharing. I like using 'for everybody else'. This is one of those poses where people try to rush into the advanced pose before they are ready.
Totally agree! 🎉🔥
Folks with lower back issues often find this pose a little scary. And speaking from experience injuries can result from not listening to the body when it whispers "this is enough for today". W.R.T. "being too low" or "too high" as you put it. It is a consequence of the position of the lifted knee in relation to the hip. Knee higher than the hip equates to less strain for the lower back, as you indicated in the video. It then follows that there are two ways in which the lifted leg can be extended. First suppose the knee begins at the same height as the hip. From this position the knee can be extended with no change in the angle of the femur/hip, the upper body typically comes up higher of course (check out this video: Esak Garcia - Champions of Champions - 2012-2013 USA Yoga Asana National Championships 1:30). Second, suppose the knee begins higher than the hip. From this position two joints need to be involved in extending the lifted leg A) the knee must extend, and B) the him must also undergo extension as the angle of the femur/hip changes . In this second style of extending the leg the upper body is more likely to come forward. Contrast this upper body movement with the first style of extending the leg. Notice that the upper body is moving in different directions. Moreover, since 2 joints are involved in extending the lifted leg these joints can move in three different ways: I) Knee then hip. II) Hip then knee, or III) both somewhat simultaneously. One question that naturally comes to my mind: How high is too high for the knee of the lifted leg - given that as teachers we don't know what lower back issues a given student might be dealing with.
Thanks for your comment … I like the knew a little higher … around 6 to 8!inches, to protect the sacrum and still be able to extend to parallel! 🙏🙏
I agree that Teachers sometimes (maybe accidentally) encourage beginning students to fully express before they are ready. Focusing on teaching to the beginners and framing advanced expressions as options (i.e. "if your body is ready and once the standing leg is strong") seems to make the collective room understand that full expression is not necessarily the goal.
True!!
Difficult pose to do and to teach!
Yessss….. but you have an advantage!
