Why Jupiter DOESN’T Orbit Sun?

  • The fifth planet from the Sun and owner of the most iconic stormy swirl in the Solar system, Jupiter is nothing if not massive. So massive, in fact, that the planet doesn’t simply orbit our sun, but drags it along for the ride.
    Since all the planets exert a gravitational pull on the sun, there exists a center of gravity, also called Barycenter between them. For most of the planets in our solar system, the barycenter exists either at or near the core of the sun. That’s because the sun is so much more massive than all the planets, yet there is actually one exception to this. The barycenter between the sun and Jupiter actually exists outside of the sun’s surface.
    Thus, the sun and Jupiter actually orbit this point. Technically, the two objects orbit each other, although Jupiter’s orbit around the sun is much more obvious. The gravitational pull of Jupiter causes the sun to move in a small orbit around a point that exists outside of the sun itself. Although the sun does not technically orbit Jupiter, the gravitational pull of the gas giant does cause the sun to move.

    Funfact : That makes Jupiter and the Sun a binary system
    More interesting: Jupiter isn't massive enough to be classified as a brown dwarf due to her lack of internal fusion , this makes it one of the very few Sun/planet binary system

    But the barycenter only exists because the sun is there, so Jupiter is still orbiting the sun. If the sun vanished, Jupiter wouldn't keep its orbit

    If we consider Saturn, Uranus and Neptune as brown dwarfs (since they are also made of star material) then we would have to count them in

    Jupiter refused to orbit the sun because....the Sun is too hot! :)

    All objects interact with each other due to their mass (which is energy as per Einstein equation) bend space-time. In a star system like our own (solar system), all planets and moons and asteroids interact with each other. Their orbits are affected by each other which is why is so difficult to predict asteroid collisions in a long term. Right now we are in a very delicate balance where all planets and the sun are able to coexist without creating big chaos in their orbits, but this was not always the case, and won't probably be the case in the distant future. Orbits keep changing slowly, and there might be a time where the planets will end up shifting orbits, even more if some large object passes by our solar system within a relatively close distance. We just need a rogue planet to pass by to completely blow up the delicate balance we have, Earth could be thrown away from the sun, or, could be thrown in a spiral orbit to collide with the sun, or Jupiter... who knows.
    Just be graceful we are alive and living in this time of relative peace and calm in our little solar system.

    Another interesting thing is that juipiter is a failed star. If it gained enough mass it would become a brown dwarf star.

    • @rihangarg09
      @rihangarg09 Рік тому +3

      It needs at least 75 more mass than its current to qualify being a failed star. Thus it is not at all failed star.

    Even though gravity is dependent on the mass and the radius of the object, mass and size don't have anything to do with each other

    Compared to the Sun Jupiter looks really small, I think the Sun's centre of mass would just still be in the Sun, but hey that's just my theory
