  • An untechnical tutorial showing how to use the Hotone Ampero Controller MIDI foot pedal to program up to 128 presets in The Kernom Ridge overdrive pedal.
    UPDATE: You can use Control Change (CC) for individual parameters on the pedal. but you can only use Program Change (CC) for presets.
    CABLE NOTE: 10 Pin MIDI goes from MIDI OUT of Ampero Controller to MIDI IN on Kernom Ridge (thanks TOM!) - I am using only one cable... you can use more, but that would be to chain more MIDI devices together - which is possible, but I have not done that and would not know how (sorry).
    Links:
    kernom.com/en-us
    (Not just info about The Ridge, but also support, a great FAQ section, and manual)
    / @kernom6880
    www.hotoneaudi...
    (All the specs and documents - none of which I looked at! I may have misspoke in the video and there might not be an app for Windows. Only Android and iOS. You might need to look into that for yourself.)
    I wanted the folks like me who might be a little on the analog side to know this is doable. If you are unfamiliar with MIDI, you might want to do a little research - I just watched a couple of MIDI basics vids here on UA-cam. I had very little experience. I was confused for example that all the numbers start at 00 and not 01. There are 128 presets (000 to 127). The banks are numbered like that too... 00 is actually your #1 bank. New to me! Only used controllers to trigger virtual instruments, but that was practically plug and play. There was a slight learning curve for me to program the presets on The Ridge, but I overcame it in minutes.
    A lot of what I say here in the video applies to most of the MIDI controllers I looked at. I believe many (most?) have the ability to send Program Change (PC). I picked the Ampero because the guys at Kernom confirmed it worked, it was small for my board, and it was one of the most affordable I could find.
    One thing I did not mention is that The Ridge has MIDI through, so you can chain it with other MIDI controlled things. It has other features too you can look into.
    Thanks for watching. If you have questions, ask. I will try and answer if I am able.

    This is really helpful. MIDI seems so complicated to me and most guides all talk about setting up entire boards for midi and all this complicated stuff. But I’m just wanting to really use it for the kernom just like this for basic preset changing, so I can take 3 different drive pedals off my board and just get the Kernom. Thanks for this

      This note means a ton to me! Seriously. Like you I have had to sift through hours of video to figure things out over the years and when that one helpful video comes up it means so much to me... That is exactly what I was hoping would happen when I made this video. Thank you for taking time out to say this. It is not lost on me.

    The KR looks like a great pedal especially with the midi capability. The only downside I can see is if you had 5 or 6 saved overdrive presets it wouldn’t appear these would be easily ’tweakable’ at a gig as you can’t actually visibly see the OD settings. But that would be asking a lot and also up the price!

    • @BlugubriousMusic
      @BlugubriousMusic  Рік тому

      If you get the update (you can watch my other video on that) you can see and hear the difference with the way the lights blink e.g. if you adjust the preset live... say the gain knob... it blinks until it is in its 'preset' position... once there, light goes solid and any turn after that is adjusting it... then a press/hold on/off saves it if you want to... so, it is pretty tweakable. I might even say you could work that to your advantage and set up a few jumping off point presets with the express goal of tweaking them... just a thought. But check out the updated video... I actually adjust a preset in it with the update (and all new ones ship like that).

      @@mydayis5 I was just going to say 'no', but I did one better... if you email me just my name here at gmail (it's on the about page too), I just did a quick unlisted video switching between presets... I might make a better one later, but did not want you to have to wait if you are close to purchasing... for me, this pedal was a major purchase... not lots of funds, so I wanted all my questions (like yours) answered. Would love to help you get the pedal and have no regrets... I am not sponsored or anything and nothing to gain for me here, but they have been very good and helpful (and supportive) of me and I appreciate that and am happy to help others find them... send me an email and I will send a link. Off to bed now, so as soon as I am back at the computer, I will send it.

    Brilliant video, very clear and easy to follow, do you know if you can mix presets from the kernom in normal mode and high power mode? That would be super cool...

      looks like getting presets in "punishing" mode is the same method (you have to enter punishing mode to access hem initially) but once you've dialled them in and assigned them using your instructions you can recall them from ampero in the usual way...sweet....@@BlugubriousMusic

    • @BlugubriousMusic

      @@johnlewins2193 Do you know if you have presets in both modes if it switches modes when you switch presets? Like if 1 is normal mode preset and 2 is punishing, will it turn on and off punishing when going between the two. Not important for me, but some folks might read this and find it helpful.
      Cool of you to report back. Thanks for that.

    What about the latency between changing presets? How noticable it is?

    • @BlugubriousMusic
      @BlugubriousMusic  9 місяців тому +2

      You asked a good question! I just did a test... and you have a couple of switch options in the Ampero - my presets have all been the default "Single" mode... which has been fine for me, but the preset engages when you let go of the button rather than when you press - that could be seen as latency, BUT and it is important... just to test for you, I programmed using "momentary" mode and it is instant - no latency - when you depress the button... so, no... there does not have to be latency. As far as noticable... in my latest update vid, I show there is no click/pop/noise when switch, perfectly smooth... smoother than try bypass switches actually. Hope this helps... feel free to ask more if you need

      @ricardoaxelgarciadiaz6149 9 місяців тому

      @@BlugubriousMusicthanks for replying! I would check The new video soon. There's no latency even if you change drastically from one type of clippling to another? (For example having a preset with a light boost and recalling a new preset with a PC that has a very distorted sound)

    • @BlugubriousMusic
      @BlugubriousMusic  8 місяців тому +1

      I'm not exactly sure what your question means... What I can tell you is you can put a preset on all four buttons then move up to the next four and put four more and then move up to the next four and so on... For a total of 128... It goes 1 through 4 then you push up 5 through 8 then you push up 9 through 12...

    • @BlugubriousMusic

      From the website 100 banks (each bank includes 4 footswitches settings, 2 CTRL/EXP jack settings and more)
      That means 4 presets (one per button) per bank
      1-4 then up 5-8 then up 9-12, etc.
