Hey Thanks! I have the Torin 3.5 ton jack…same set up… leaking in the same spot. Everything was so tight that I worried I would break or strip something. After watching your video, I felt better about smacking my tools with a mallet! My seal looked pristine, so I just cleaned everything up real good and put it back together. All fixed! Thanks a million! The only thing I would add is, when you pull the innards out, note how many turns it takes to unscrew them. So when you screw the innards back together, don’t screw them together tight, leave some room for travel so you can open and close the valve. I made that mistake and it took me a few times taking it apart to realize my mistake. (Hopefully that makes sense).
The purge or bleed it.just lift it a couple times open the plug where you add oil.. also don't forget to put grease on the o.ring for lubrication when assembly.....good video man
This video helped a lot. My Craftsman jack's handle got stuck and wouldn't turn. I disassembled it and took out the center part. Then I use two wrenches to separate the center part into two pieces. Then put it back as shown in the video and everything worked again.
Very nice. I have a very similar Craftsman floor jack. It was in the basement of the house when I moved in, I cleaned it up, spray painted it silver and the thing is a great jack. It just started leaking oil from this seal, also the o-ring where the handle piston goes in. Guess ill buy some new o-rings.
I hadn't thought to check there, I've been looking all over the pump. I like how you mention regular o-rings from Home Depot. There are 'rebuild kits' for like $60 and a LOT of work, but chances are there is only one failure point...
Very useful video, I have a jack that uses the same exact valve body, and read reviews that these tend to leak over time. Glad that I found this, definitely saving it into my watch later archives just in case
Not bad!!! Thank you for sharing this, it'll help a lot in my attempt fixing/reconditioning my little 2.5-tin floorjack! So far i have an issue with a jack ,sitting in my pals backyard for ~1+ years. When i pull out that plug with its inside sliding pumper-cylinder , I'll know more ,and how to proceed.. Thanks again big time! Carl NY September 6,2023
I have the same jack in the UK, in fact two of them, one made by Halfords and one made by SGS Engineering. I believe it is a common worldwide patent for a 3 ton trolley / floor jack design, and therefore many manufacturers use the same blueprint. This one in the video (the USA version by Craftsmen) is 100% identical to both my 3 ton floor jacks. The SGS version I have has better seals to the Halfords version however, and is assembled in the UK instead of in a Chinese factory commissioned to produce such equipment for Halfords, and therein lies the ONLY differences between them as far as I can tell.
At 3:06, I would grease that o-ring, the channel and the shaft that turns, use a moly grease. That is a huge wear part, constantly being twisted. You want it well lubed to last a long time.
I make a point of wetting the o seal with fluid first so it seals better..yours sincerely from the old qeer corrupt UK 🇬🇧..hope this helps hunx xxxx yours sincerely from the old qeer corrupt UK 🇬🇧
Never understood people taking cars apart or work in the garage with tools in flip flops. And yet he’s got silly gloves on at the same time for a little bit of hydraulic oil.
The trouble is, that O-Rings are meant to be used in static applications only, whereas seals are meant for this type of application. They cheap out in their production.
@@johnb5519 Actually the problem with many standard O Rings is they are not made for use with petroleum products, they swell. Put some vasolene on one and see what happens after a few weeks. I pulled that boneheaded move on my water filter. Oops.
@@diaperjoeisaped1723 If the surfaces that ride against them are nice and smooth, they are fine, but with parts that won't stay perfectly smooth, due to poor quality materials, they won't last long.
@@johnb5519 A decent jack cylinder is honed, may not be the case with the wuhan specials. They do pit over time as well. It takes some effort to clean them. Never a bad idea to exchange thoughts.
My diverter valve is working on a bench test, but not when it's on the car. I'm trying to find some information on testing the connector plug, and what triggers it to open, like maybe a fuse or something, farther back into the system. Any help will be appreciated.
From my similar experience the problem was the ball valve,(ball bearing) under the release valve parts that the video showed. I just cleaned out the recess and put another ball bearing in ; as far as I can see when you screw down ,(turning the handle to the right ) you are pushing the ball bearing valve on to the oil hole at the bottom thereby closing off the flow and allowing the oil to be compressed and push the Jack up. Note that you turn to the right to shut the valve but the valve, due to the two cogs turns to the left . I’ve yet to find a video really explaining this.
Bro i have the same floor jack from JBM manufacturer, and i can't make it to go up or even turn the relief mechanism. Do you guys think it is due to oil lack? I checked it and oil does not cover inner piston
Mine leaked at the plunger , next to that , i spent 60 bucks on seal kit from lazzars hcrcnow and it was the wrong one , apparently theres a old model and new model ..oops .i guess im just gonna go buy a new one , im not one much for sending stuff back , kinda pisses me off ..but thats my world
Which kit did you buy? The old one or the new one? I think the kit I'm going to need is the old one before 2013. I'm tearing my jack apart tomorrow to find out. Do you still have the kit you bought by chance?
No way man! That big bolt actually goes out with the little bolt that goes to the cog? I was coming up with all sorts of theories on how it comes out. I broke one of my tools and stupidly sawed off the little bolt that goes to the cog. I torque the big nut with all my strength but couldn't get it out. I left the jack out in the rain, maybe in welded in a bit?

I have had 5 hydraulic "trolly" jacks over the decades. From a 3000 to 10,000 pounds lifting capacity. Oh, and another 12 ton (24,000lb) "bottle" jack(purchased at HF for ~$12). In 1989, I purchased a Sears 3ton "trolly" jack, fir $89. It is identical to what you have in this video (except it's painted gray). They all work great. The "cheese-est" two are the type that you find at low-priced /quality chain automotive parts stores. Those two have smaller wheels and casters and the frames are narrow. They leaked from the very first day, but worked. The "professional" jacks, that I purchased a few years later, have beefier frames, wheels and casters. At my father's automobile repair business, are "tradesmen" quality jacks, made by Hein-Warner. They cost a fortune, are large, and heavy. They are rarely used: there are 11 lifts. Two "post" lifts are outside. They are for lifting Winnebagos and commercial trucks. Those commercial trucks (big rigs) and RVs have huge brakes(huge everything). Still the brakes wear out and require inspections. Who wants their brakes to fail, when yir coming down a mountain, with a speedboat on the back (or a heavy load). What is important and distinguishable difference between a $19 jack and a $100 jack is: size, lifting capacity, and widely spread frames and wheels. When you lift a vehicle, they are less likely to tip over.

Thanks. I was curious about how to add more oil. And how much! I too have a Craftsman, from when Sears was still Sears.
I got the SAME EXACT Jack (with the same jack stands) and the same Problem! I also got it at Sears like 13 years ago.
Thanks for the video 👍🏼👍🏼

Same here with a JBM 3,5T, literally identical
As a bonafide handyman myself, what you did looks good to me! Thanks!
Good luck on longevity of those O-Rings. They are material purposed for use in water areas, not exposed to oils.

Cool Vid.
Good thing to to is test your Jack every now and then...lift something and let it sit to see if it holds.
Damn, shame you didn't include the air purge and oil refill.
ace hardware has metric O rings 20mm x 15mm x 2.5mm and matched up for mine.
Thank man saved me from buying a new jack lol mine was already new an blew this seal out after 5 uses
Excellent video, Fantastic Flip Flops. Thanks for posting the o-ring details.
They're probably metric O-rings. Harbor Freight has a complete set for around 10 bucks. Thanks for the helpful video.
Thanks for the great video. Can you do one of the bleeding purging filling process? Thanks.

does it need a little hydraulic fluid refill?
This guy remembers me the good ideas. Thanks man!
That valve requires a bit of adjustment when you place back in, and is a bit tricky. There's a small steel ball beneath it. Thanks for the useful vid!
Thanks for the video. But for the love of Granola why would you EVER do this job in flip-flops?!?!
Because he’s an idiot and his wife’s patronizing has set him into a state of denial where he truly believes he’s a real man.
Never understood people taking cars apart or work in the garage with tools in flip flops. And yet he’s got silly gloves on at the same time for a little bit of hydraulic oil.
They looked like perfect Japanese safety boots to me.
When he hit that wrench with the flip flop next to the jack I was ready for the pain
Because he can ?
I've owned 2 new craftsman jacks and they all leak. I'll never buy one again, but I'll try to fix it in regards, thanks.
Hello, so wich mark os the best?
Great. Thankyou,,
I’m glad you did this wearing flip flops and sweat pants 👌👌, I do this all the time ..
I have that same jack. Can you replace the gears on that jack?
How long have you had your craftsman floor jack?
Im glad i am not the only one who works on stuff in the garage with sandals on 😂😂😂
Hi, have the same type of jack, just wondering if you know how i can fix the fast release of the jack. It doesnt release slowly
I have that issue as well. I might just buy a new jack 🤷♂️

Lol.
What do they use in faucets?
O RINGS! DUH

My jack floor is leaking but I couldn’t find the leak. I fill it up and bleed. It work great but it leak whenever just siting in the garage.

Nice video. What if my gears won't lock??? I keep twisting to tighten for lifting but keeps going

Excellent video.
Thanks sir
How's the o ring holding up?
Thanks for posting, my jack need a seal
Solved my problem. Thanks
You have to use o-rings specially for jacks.
I think they have to be O-rings that tolerate oil/hydraulic fluid, but I doubt plumbing O-rings will last long. Good catch
Thanx!
manufacturer suggestion "Throw it away and give us another $50". Most likely lol
But like how do you purge this exact jack?
Do I have to refill this at some point? Mine won't go down.
“Buying o rings for your craftsman jack at Home Depot because sears doesn’t exhist anymore”
What size adjustable wrench is that?
I have the exact jack can you give me the model number so i can order a rebuild kit
Thank you. Shoes bro
Great web content! It looks very professional! Maintain the helpful job!
How many balls coming and how to repaire please inform
are flip flops part of tools required?

When the jack saddle is down, there isn't any pressure under the screws; so, it won't leak, nor fluid be pushed out.
