Backhaus made his international debut in Warsaw on 17 February 1911, and here is what the critics wrote regarding his "dazzling and balanced technique", with "its pearly execution of the scales, graceful passages, extraordinarily equal and swift trills, efficient octaves, his hand does not miss any distant intervals, and still his playing is calm and does not show any tendency to show off with the technique, his tone is singing, and his touch velvet."
of course, Backhaus has some characteristics of late 19th century playing: the beauty of tone, marvellous articulation, legato, flexibility of rhythm -- no modern musician could play quite like this (despite very few exceptions). still, I prefer the much more poetic approaches of Rosenthal, Pachmann, Busoni, Koczalski and Paderewski in individual etudes.
I am astonished by this recording. Backhaus has a certain joy in his virtuosity and a great rhythmic drive (see nos. 5, 8, 9, 10) but definitely knows when to pause and give the music a moment to breathe (check out the slower etudes.)
Try Sergio Fiorentino 1959, Pletnjev in various live versions, Pogorelich 1990, Cyprien Katsaris 1993, Aimi Kobayashi third round Warsaw competition ... Not better, all different.
Exactly. This is a thing happening so often to 78 transfers, because the editors think people would not like the hiss from those old discs. Check out my channel, there you will find some of my own transfers from my 78s with all the treble preserved.
Backhaus recorded the 24 Etudes of Chopin in 1928 in London. Later he recorded several etudes to 1950s. This recording is remastered. For mi is among the best recordings of Chopin's Etudes.
I like no 1,2 (but why add notes?),4,7,8,9. No 3 is far too slow in outer sections. 5 is fast for the sake of it. 6 is too slow. 10 not enough difference in articulation, too much rit. 11 sounds rushed. 12 good but where are the pianos. I don't like the ending; the chord (BAR 81) is marked P, NOT FF?

yusufu9 Thank you.
@@peregrinusabsoluti2302 Thank you!
IE he was a god! it shows in this recording!
Stunning performances.
No. 3 is absolutely stunning. Pedal, phrasing, contrast, and above all a singing tone.
Couldn't agree more! It's incredibly moving to listen to this sublime musicianship.
I love it ... toujours je ne peux pas que admirer et ecouter, toujours comme ca!

recorded in 1927! - just awesome
che meraviglia!
Wow! Beautiful! Thank you!
no. 10: quelle merveille!
Genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best video of Chopin Opus 10 I heard on youtube!
I challenge you to find a video even better than this!

Where is the " video "????????😅
He has a stunning recording of op 10 no 6.
7:29 is the very BEST!
erstaunlich
Yes, wonderful!
Wonderful !!!!
FANTASTIC my favoruite is no 10
Etude 10 is very beautiful and impressive too! I like so much!
But from opus 10 I love most number 11 and 12.
Grandios!

The tempo of nr.3 is totally i😮ncorrect
❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏
No. 7.
Wow ! Thanks a lot !
paese week olsshon garrick.. etude n 1 , 10.. may be the best of alla times
Yes .. abdolutely fantastic Olsshon !!! PERFECT
Cortot
Non urtext last measures of nr 1.....😮
When was this recorded? I love early recordings!

@@bortkievitch -- I'd still choose the pre-war recording any day.

Kristina Miller....
Backhaus is strong is his notes. No piano.

ngulamammmt
Horrible! He swallowed a metronome and plays everything alla marcia!
