There are strong parallels between Haytham and William here. Both are fathers who have achieved an high rank in their respective orders (One an Mentor and the other one an Grand Master of his Templar Rite) who are immensely disapointed in there son for who they turned out to be. They work together but it doesn't go as well but the son is trying! They try to make peace or small talks with their fathers and even try to save their lives or actively seek ways to work together... but in the end one father just refuses the sons attempts and the other feels regret. Both story's are a tragedy.
Hey, I made the comparison, though I might not have been the first to do that, So I will add some stuff and even give a new perspective of it. True, Haytham and William are very identical as leaders of their organization and always had been focused on the goals of their said organizations, but whereas Haytham lost the trust of his Child due to withholding and even lying about having Important Information for far too long( namely the true cause of Kaniehtí: io's death) whereas William told his child the truth about his motives and even told him what his parents did after he left the Farm( breaking up, not literally and searching for him, though the Templars were, unfortunately, a bit faster). Whereas Haytham would rarely show remorse and show sincere sorrow for the pain he caused, William showed real remorse and kept his Promises. And Finally, whereas Haytham shows no remorse for his actions and chooses his own Order over his own Son, claiming to have no need for desperate Old men and dying with a faint pride and the words: "I should have killed you long ago", thus Leaving Ratonhnhaké: ton (Connor) with bitter words and regrets, whereas William does the opposite: He actually choose his son over the World, which is selfish, but very endearing after having been always so focused on his Assassin goals. I believe that's the difference in the way Templar and Assassins view their family. For the Templars, everything is a means to an end, even the happiness and lives of their loved ones. For the Assassins, Humanity is a family and a family needs protection and should not be compromised, hence why the tenet: "Never compromise the Brotherhood" The Assassins are to me not just a faction, but a bloodline, ethnicity and even a family that needs to protect it's people foremost and put their safety and happiness at the top, which William ultimately and presumably learned from the mistakes of his ancestor Haytham. That's why I think Ezio's theme is the theme of the Assassins, his family, and every Assassin belongs to it. It's super cheesy and Idealized, but at the very least Cheese is tasty and nothing is true and everything is permitted. It is pretty sad how both story's turn out and probably the best parallel between past and present day story we have seen in the games... which is probably saying something XD infact I think AC3 has the most missed oppertunities to make connections between present day and past: - Connor lived outside society in a village and Desmond lived of the grid on the Farm. - Both lives are tragic - They both take place in America and go to the same locations (AC Brotherhood did the same but whatever) - The mother and father split up but with some differences here and there - Juno is in both story's And more... just imagine if we had Modern Day missions but one can dream! ''Son, come with us we find another way'' - William I'm gonna be real here and I know this sounds a bit cliche but I was sort of hoping for Layla and William to have one of those surrogate father/daughter relationships after seeing him in Origins. In one of the optional conversations Layla says she believes that his son and her could've been good friends or something along those lines... still better idea than Layla the Chosen One who has nothing to do with Desmond and all his ancestors and is going to prevent another world ending catastrophe. That does not count for every Templar, sure a templar might consider sacrificing his or her family member (or entire family) faster than an Assassin for the greater good but not everyone and some don't really see everything as a means to an end... except those people are lower in the Templar Order if I'm correct and everything in the end does have a certain goal in mind I mean just look at Angelus but I can't say something about their Anti-depressants or cancer treatments and trying to improve technology and stopping wars. I do believe they want to improve the human race however the question than rises even with all the things I said above... is it worth it to life in blissfull ignores since birth and never be able to open your eyes or get murdered for knowing the truth... interesting question with many answers.
