- Talcott Parsons, an American functional theorist, is regarded by many as one of the most influential social theorists in the mid-1900s. He attempts, with his "Systems Levels" to show how four components--culture, society, personality and environment--help us all to live within the confines of our social boundaries.
as someone with a social theory exam in 7 hours, I appreciate this! I've been confused all semester on pesky Talcott. Our prof has assigned us all his written works and yes, they are crazy hard to wrap your mind around!

Thanks a real lot, yes indeed just last night I have found out about the action schema which puts each system on a scale of importance. But your help was really important for me to understand that in each subystem the AGIL is present in each and every subsystem as I could not get it right! Thanks !

Hello! Yes, each of the four systems levels must, according to Parsons' theory, have the AGIL components, quantified in some way. So, you need to think in terms of how each of the systems can fulfill the Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Latency and Integration aspects and how each of these is related to the structure of society. I have a question.
In your explanation of the social system within Parsons model, how does that differentiate from Goffman's symbolic interaction i.e a presentation of self? Is it merely that Parsons believes the roles are structurally determined and not by the action or choice of the individual playing the role?

Hi, I think there’s a significant amount of difference between Parsons and Goffman. Remember that Parsons is a structural theorist, and as such, sees people as being influenced by the structure. Conversely, Goffman, as a micro theorist, sees the structure as being influenced by the interactions that individuals have day-to-day. Goffman stresses that the interactions we have with others help to create roles, and that this builds the structure. Parsons says that the interactions themselves create the structure (our shared reality). Remember also that the social system is only one aspect of Parsons’ theory; this gives the individual limited ability to impact the structure whereas Goffman would likely say that individuals are paramount to structural creation. I also think (my opinion) that interaction theorists in general would give more emphasis to individual AGENCY, whereas structural theorists place more emphasis on fitting into an already existing structure. Of course, this structural view brings us to a philosophical problem-how did the structure first get built if not for agency?
