  • Kabir's writings reflect a special love and hate relationship with " Avadhuta". Many of his poems address the "Avadhu" or "Avadhuta" as a one way address with love and many a times loaded with lots of punches of satire. Kabir explains his philosophy, mainly Yogic or many a times Tantric as he frequently uses yogic / Tantric fundamental terms like Sukhaman (subsequently to be elaborated in Sukhmani Sahib in Sikh literature) . Sahaz, Shushmana, Gagan, Awaz, Ujala, Sabd, Tri Bhuvan, Jhankaar, Ras, Sunya Mandal, Man, Hansa, Guru, Tan Ki Tapan, Bhava Bandhan, Jyoti, Unamni, Samani, but plainly and simply. Unfortunately, there is nothing much available to hear from Kabir's contemporary Avadhus. Perhaps, what Avadhu has to say is amply contained in Veads and Upanishadas and Tantra/ Yogic literature. However, what ever Kabir has to say to Avadhuta is very relevant and essential in nature. Kabir's relations with Avadhutas perhaps reflects the reality of Varanasi of his times when under sordid Muslim fear the Avadhuta is silent having withdrawn into himself and the non traditional mystics are vocal in a way that they would not be construed as Hindus. In essence, there is nothing much difference between what Kabir has to say and what Avadhuta will do. In traditional heritage, something exists what Kabir said as also what Avadhu would do or follow in tradition and normal course. Except for a few avadhus like Dattatraya or Gorakhnath's traditions, Avadhus are not known to indulge much in literary pursuits like writings etc. For them a subtle path exists.Their path is just doing. Just being there and enjoying their ways.
Most of the so called " Kabir Projects" today, I encountered, work on "Dalit Fault Lines" and are deeply inspired and funded by Anglican Church and the Western vested interests with a sinister purpose and motive. Mainly to divide Hindus.
That is what Kabir would not have desired and wished. Kabir was never ever meant for the "First Responders" even in Muslim times... but unfortunately, today he is being used as such.

    Avadhoota yugana yugana hum yogi,
    Aave na jaay mite na
    kabahun, sabada anaahad bhogi,
    sabhi thor jamaat hamari,
sab hi thor par mela, hum sab maay,
    sab hein hum maay,
    hum hein bahuri akela
Hum hi sidha samadhi hum hi,
    hum mouni hum bole
    rup sarup arup dikha ke,
hum hi me hum tho khele
kahe kabira jo suno bhai sadho,
    nahi na koi ichcha
apni madhi mein aap mein dolun,
    khelun sahaj swa ichcha
    Translation
Oh solitary wanderer, for ages and
    ages
    I’ve been a yogi.
    I don’t come or go,
    never disappear,
    enjoying the endless sound.
    Everywhere I see my people,
    every place a gathering.
    I’m in all,
    all are in me,
    with many, I ‘m alone.
    I’m yogic power,
    deep meditation,
    I’m silent,
    I speak.
    Showing outer form,
    inner form,
    no form,
    I play
    within myself.
    Kabir says, listen friend,
    seeker, I have no desire.
    In my hut, I sway,
in the self , I play
    simply to please
    myself.

I raised a fundamental question? Why does Kabir address "Avadhuta" in many of his poems? Does that reflect his love for them or hatred for them? Is it because he thought they would be able to satisfy his queries or he mocks them? In his days of Varanasi and even today, an "Avadhuta" would be a mysterious and mystic entity trying to find answer to some of the simple question of existence. Oh Avadhuta - please tell me, Oh Avadhuta - listen to me .Oh Avadhuta !
