- Pandit Kumar Gandharva is a renowned Indian, Hindustani classical singer. Pandit Kumar Gandharva is also known for his expertise in Bhajan. He also experimented with other genres of music like devotional songs known as Bhajans, folk songs like Nirguni Bhajans and Kabir Bhajans. Pandit Kumar Gandharva’s unique style and creativity made him compose songs in the same Raga in both fast and slow pace. The most unique feature about the singing style of Kumar Gandharva was that he refused to be limited by the specific tradition and rules of a Gharana. He was born on 8 April 1924 and was originally named Shivaputra Siddramayya Komkali. He is also known as Kumarji. Pandit Kumar Gandharva passed away in January 1992. He had not been in the best of health, and to me it looked as if the thought of being unable to sing in the future was on his mind and had caused him to lose interest in living. His last public concert in Bombay took place on 22nd November 1991, at the Nehru Centre.
Bhajan-a word common to most North Indian languages-means a devotional song. Nirgun poetry evokes a deeper level of experience by explaining the normal ways of thinking, pushing the listener to a place that is no-place. Kabir is the premier nirgun poet of North India. The instruments which are used to play with the bhajans such as harmonium, dholak, manjira and occasionally a violin.
In this album “Sings Nirguni Bhajans” Pandit Kumar Gandharva has shown his brilliance and knowledge in Hindustani classical Music by the recordings. Over all this album is a rare collection and a must have for Indian Classical Music connoisseurs.

I believe it was sometime in early eighties I attended Baithak organized by SPIC MACAY where Pandit ji invited to impart the nuances of Indian classical Music among the students of a famous DU College. His mesmerizing rendition of Nirguni bhazans captivated all and no one realized how two hours passed. That is the powerful magic he possessed. His style of rendition is vivid in my mind. Shat Shat naman to departed soul but his bhajans are immortal.
It's always heavenly experience to hear Kumar Gandharvji.

Shri Shri Shri Kumar Gandharva's folk touch in his katcheries and bhajans is superb and that beauty cannot be expressed in words. I am his fan to the core ! I am basically lover of Karnataki style of music. At my age of 9 first time I attended music concert of Shri Shri Shri Bade Gulam Ali Khan in 1953 and got stunned. From then onward I am enjoying both the Hindusthani style and Karnataki style of music equally. First time I heard Pandit Kumar's concert in All India Radio Akashvani Saturday one and half hours programme in 1977 and profusely enjoyed. I could not witness his live concerts.

इडा पिङ्गला ताना भरनी,
सुखमन तार से बीनी चदरिया ॥ २॥
आठ कँवल दल चरखा डोलै,
पाँच तत्त्व गुन तीनी चदरिया ॥ ३॥
साँ को सियत मास दस लागे,
ठोंक ठोंक कै बीनी चदरिया ॥ ४॥
सो चादर सुर नर मुनि ओढी,
ओढि कै मैली कीनी चदरिया ॥ ५॥
दास कबीर जतन करि ओढी,
ज्यों कीं त्यों धर दीनी चदरिया ॥ ६॥
कबीर साहेब ने जुलाहे के कार्य को आधार बना कर इसके सादृश्य वाणी दी है की इस मानव जीवन में देह, मानव तन का ताना बाना बहुत ही महीन/नाज़ुक है। इस तन के निर्माण में ताना क्या है और भरनी क्या है। कौनसे तार से यह चदरिया बनी है। इंगला और पिङ्गला इसके ताना और भरनी है वहीँ पर सुषुम्ना रूपी तार से इसे बुना गया है।
इस तनरूपी चदरिया के निर्माण में आठ पंखुड़ियों का कमल ही चरखा है। पृथ्वी, जल, आग, आकाश, हवा पाँच तत्वों से इस चदरिया का निर्माण हुआ है। पंचतत्व रूपी इस चदरिया को बुनना बड़ा जटिल है। इसे बनाने में साईं को दस महीनों का समय लगा है। साईं ने इसे ठोक बजाकर इसका निर्माण किया है। इस चादर को मनुष्य के अतिरिक्त सुर, मुनि और विद्वानों ने पहना लेकिन वे भी इसे दाग से बचा नहीं सके। वे भी माया के प्रभाव से बच नहीं पाए। कबीर दास जी ने इस चादर को पहना और जैसा साईं से लिया वैसे ही वापस धर दी। उन्होंने सांसारिक विषय वासनाओं के दाग इस पर नहीं लगने दिए।
इस पद में साहेब ने जुलाहे के कार्य का उदाहरण देकर समझाया है की जैसे जुलाहा बड़े ही जतन पूर्वक चादर को बुनता है, सावधानी से तानों बानों का कार्य करता है वैसे ही ईश्वर मानव देह रूपी चादर का निर्माण करता है।

Amazing spellbinding voice. Incomparable. Has he sung in kannada? Has he sung any vachanas?. Curious about this although he has spent his most of the time in Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh. He is kannadiga and lingayat by birth ie Karnataka state.

योगसाधनेचीच महत्ती कबिरांनी या रचनेत मांडली आहे. मांडणीत रुपकांची योजना आहेच. गगन म्हणजे सहस्रदलकमल. त्यात होणारी मधूर सुरांची उधळण ज्ञानी किंवा गुरू ऐकतो आहे हा नाद येतोय शून्यातून. परमेश्वरानेच व्यापून टाकलेल्या शून्यातून. जीव येथे येतो तो तेथूनच. इथे त्याला नामाभिधानरुपी पत्ता प्राप्त होतो. त्यानंतर आत्मस्वरूपाचे विस्मरण होऊन हा जीव विषयांच्या उपभोगाकडे धावत सुटतो. विषय म्हणजेच शब्द, स्पर्ष, रूप, रस आणि गंध. ही बंधने. ज्ञानी मंडळी यात अडकून पडत नाहीत. ती सारतत्वाची आराधना करतात, ते प्राप्त करतात. म्हणजेच नवनीत. इतरांच्या वाट्याला येते ते असारतत्त्व म्हणजेच ताक. तसे व्हावयाचे नसेल तर योगसाधना, कुंडलिनी जागृती करावीच लागेल आणि ज्ञानी गुरूंची शिकवण हीच आहे, असे कबिरांनी या रचनेत म्हटले आहे. कुंडलिनी ब्रह्मरंध्रात (म्हणजे नाकपुड्यांच्या वर दोन्ही भुवयांच्या मध्ये त्रिकुटी या ठिकाणी) पोचली की ज्ञानाचा प्रकाश चोहीकडे पसरतो. साधनेतील हा एक महत्त्वाचा टप्पा. तो गाठला की साधनेची ध्वजा फडकत राहते. कबीर सांगतात ते हेच, ‘अजर, अमर हो निशानी’.
