If you want to know the difference between the Ukrainian and Russian military, then here you have it. Front line infantry being able to explain the strategic and tactical overview of the operation. They knew what they were doing, how it fitted into the overall battle plan, what resources and support they had. Decision making down to the squad level so that when they hit contact they knew to fall back and fix the enemy. Two totally different military cultures.
The Russian military doctrine doesn't allow for decision making at NCO level to fit changing tactical situations. Orders are given higher up the command tree and there is no allowance made for flexibility at lower kevels. That is why so many Russian senior commanders became casualties early in the war. They were coming to front line areas to give orders relating to changing tactical situations. Most other armies allow that kind of decision by senior NCOs.
Soviet-era doctrine means junior NCOs and enlisted troops aren’t told about strategic objectives for ‘security’ reasons. The sort of paranoia and distrust that characterized government in the USSR also permeated through the military. Russia hasn’t reformed.

So if I understood that right they basically were meant to be a feint force, but also ended up taking and securing their position forcing retreat at the LESS fortified feint force’s position. Then sounds like other areas won out and reinforced forcing Russian retreat.
In February Russia stationed 100k troops along the borders. There are different sources that state between 39k and 50k Russian soldiers lost their lives. That would be 40-50% of what they surrounded the Ukraine with! Not to mention the loss in equipment, morale, trust and will to fight.

They say “I don’t support Ukraine NOR Russia,” but in reality, they desperately want Ukraine to lose, so they can blame Biden (and they all have huge man-crushes on Putin, just like their Dear Orange Messiah himself).

So if I understood that right they basically were meant to be a feint force, but also ended up taking and securing their position forcing retreat at the LESS fortified feint force’s position. Then sounds like other areas won out and reinforced forcing Russian retreat.

In February Russia stationed 100k troops along the borders. There are different sources that state between 39k and 50k Russian soldiers lost their lives. That would be 40-50% of what they surrounded the Ukraine with!
Not to mention the loss in equipment, morale, trust and will to fight.
