What's meant to make it clear that the aunt was doing terrible things to Charlie is because of well-known phrases pdf files use...
      "This is our little secret"
"Remember, you promised not to tell..."
      "You're my little princess/man/etc"
And there are often veiled threats to the kid's family that are either very direct or said as a way to guilt trip their prey into silence.
And, as others have said, it's usually someone the child knows and was also a victim of a pdf file doing something to them.
This was a huge thing the schools where my family lived made of training their teachers and staff about as well as the parents. It was right around the same time as the Stranger Danger lessons were being taught.
So, the kids were taught a lot about it, especially Never to trust Anyone (adult, teen, or child) who said those things to them; and Always trust someone They Chose to help them get away from the person harming them.
There were a couple of cases everyone knew about where that training came in clutch for the would be victims

The LAYERS of guilt Charlie's feeling, this is by far the BEST portrayal of the aftermath of SA I've ever seen. He low-key wanted his aunt to die bc she touched him, but he also misses her, bc aside from the assault, all his experiences with her were good! And on top of that he felt like he couldn't hate her bc he knew his aunt fail a suicide attempt, and he felt bad for her!
God, I love Charlie so much

A detail that breaks my heart is that Charlie promised Aunt Helen that he’d only cry for important things, that’s why he repeatedly tells himself to stop crying during his breaking point, he doesn’t think what he went through is worthy of being cried over.
    Film is so good man.

  • @araybia

you picked up on the aunt’s abuse really quick! but yes, she did touch charlie when he was younger-her warning him to not wake candace and that flashback he had of her when he was kissing sam revealed that. as charlie said, it happened to his aunt too. it’s a tragic case where the abused person becomes the abuser. charlie’s anxiety and depression came from his aunt dying on his birthday and michael’s death. the movie is set around the 80’s that’s why all of the characters like/reference all of those “old” things.

this movie DESTROYED me omg it's so heartbreaking and so many kids go through this, even the emotional co-dependency some adults form with literal children. they don't fully understand anything yet and just look to the adults in their life for comfort and guidance. the implication that the aunt had issues with self-harm and charlie, a literal child being shown comforting her and seeing those scars, she may have even told them how they happened. then, for her to also be molesting him, so many different emotions a child should not have to try to process and she dies before he can even come to terms with how bad her actions toward him were so it's like never getting full closure goddd

That his repressed memories finally coming to his mind , the aunt who understood him when he was little looks like she even told him her suicide attempts. The only person who understood him dies infront of u and then u find out they also SA'd u . I cant even imagine what this poor guy went through. Trauma after trauma after trauma. But in the end he met good people who genuinely liked him for him and I'm so glad he is recovering in the end. That's why i like this movie bcoz of its hopeful happy ending...

Being touched by my uncle inappropriately when I was young, the flashbacks and the blaming himself and the repressing of what she did to him really struck home for me. It's a great movie that has its ups and downs and awkward moments just like life has. Especially the life of a teenager and that's why I think it'd be good to let high schoolers watch this movie.

This book/movie hit me so hard growing up. It always felt extra personal because Stephen Chbosky went to my high school and based everything in our neighborhood. Things like King's-- that's a real restaurant that's about a 5 minute walk from the high school. Perfect for after football games. The movie theatre that they go to for Rocky still does frequent midnight showings with a shadow cast. Driving through the Fort Pitt tunnel is magical every single time. God I love this movie 😂

I wanted his first kiss to be real and legit, so we kissed. I didn't like him like that, I knew he liked me. It probably wasn't the coolest thing to do on my part... The fact that you caught the SA right away is crazy . From the many reactions I’ve seen of this movie , no one gets it till he actually says it. The signs are always there.

idk how anyone wouldn't catch it i think a lot of reactions just don't cuz they barely pay attention or too worried about "reacting" for a video to actually care/pay attention lol

He didn't caught. He was guessing away anything. When the movie was actually giving clues about it he didn't understand.
