Interstate '76 is a vehicular combat video game for Microsoft Windows. It was developed and published by Activision and released in 1997.
The game is set in the Southwestern United States in an alternate history of the year 1976, in which the 1973 oil crisis was never resolved. All the in-game vehicles in Interstate '76 are based on real cars, including many period American muscle cars.

Hours and hours of my youth lost to this game with no regrets. The gameplay was ace, these movie sequences were incredible and the music was fantastic.
me 2
Same here! Well said. 😊
Damn that game was goooooood ! Still remember installing the 3Dfx patch to improve the graphics... 22 years ago :-/
I loved this game lol
It doesn't feel that long ago. Damn how the times flies though :(
Its was good because it was unique
damn..
Never actually finished the game, but I played the cd audio in my car.
Just driving off the missions and exploring up in the hills was amazing at the time! Of course there was nothing much to see, but I must of spent hours just driving around. Very cool stuff :)
Yes, exactly I have the same kind of memories of this game. I too was exploring a lot. I remember I found a mountain, and you could drive quite high - to the very top I think.
i felt like play gta and red dead redemption 2 nowdays
Same here. I was impressed how "open-world" that game felt at that time!
You can drive for quite a while, its hilarious because out of nowhere can suddenly appear the side of a mountain and flip your car 82 times and blow it up.
same here!I still can remember that great sense of freedom!the map looked huge to me hahaha
"Groove check your map"
This is a game that actually could be great remade with modern engines and gameplay
and of course the same story and vibe.
Imagine an open world Interstate 76, that would be aces!
Was never able to finish the game, because my PC wasn't up to date enough, i was happy playing the game on it's lowest setting, those cutscenes were always skipping xD
I absolutely LOVED this game on Windows 95. It had a personality.
Three years later and Fallout made a very successful transition to live-action series. I'd love to see Interstate '76 achieve the same. Throw in some Bioshock Infinity and we're up and running.
I've always thought Quentin Tarantino would make an absolutely perfect movie out of this game. This jewel deserves this :)
In the French version of the game, Groove and Taurus are dubbed by the voices of Travolta and Jackson in Pulp Fiction ! Priceless !
"Hey Stampede, how bout' a poem?"
"Looking out the window of your room onto a wet rainy day
Main street under a slate grey afternoon sky
The light on your face is soft and dim under the lace curtain
And the streets are empty
In the distance, there is a flash and a rumble
Clouds sail the sky like giant wooden ships
On a blackened evergreen sea
Capped with foam."
"Whaaaoow!" :D
English is not my native language but I remember to press P a lot of times trying to figure it out what he says. I just knew someway that it was a poetry.
And now, 20 years later, I know and understand everything.
Thanks for transcript it.
This was such a cutting edge game back in 1998.. my computer had a hard time keeping up with the graphics! Spent tons of hours playing, and the soundtrack, man, so groovy!
This was the first game with Fast inverse square root graphics. Probably should look better, like quake 3 did
It unfortunately ran poorly (at the time) because it used the modified engine of Mechwarrior II...and that one already had a troubled development history and some issues. There are a lot of games from that time (spring '97) that look and run better on similar hardware.
The message at 0:06 "Yes, I am aware it's 2022, but I came here to watch old gameplay videos..."
With my faint memories of this game, i'm shocked to find out it's so story-heavy.
one of my favorite games as a teenager... i remember taurus was all like never get out of the car! and that has saved me more than once. I live by that code.
The polygon style and the lack of mouths just adds to the overall style of this game, makes it feel otherworldly in a way
I always felt like this was directly inspired by the animation in Dire Strait's Money for Nothing video :)
The team had to work with the engine that was previously used in Mechwarrior 2. To keep both ingame graphics and prerendered cutscenes stylistically consistent was rather unusual at the time, but it paid off here. The different parts feel less disjointed.
This was one of my very favourites back in the day. Thanks for the memories!!!
I remember playing this with a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick.
Force Feedback for me
Yes me too. Got the joystick for free from a dev convention!
i had a sidewinder till a few years ago..... when the trigger finally broke.
.
i used it to play DCS flight sim...... which really requires a FULL!!!! HOTAS system (hands on throttle and stick)
like.... i now use a satek x52 pro.... and even it doesnt quite have enough buttons
.
look at the thrust-master "warthog" stick and throttle.... now thats a joystick
.
unfortunately..... no one has force feedback these days
people playing DCS either have to spend 1000 dollars on a custom "mom and pop" make FFB stick
or are still using the old Microsoft FFB stick from the 90s.....
.
flight sims are REALLY making a comeback
especially with Microsoft's JUST released flight sim.....FX2020
.
maybe we will get some FFB sticks that are reasonably priced soon??
oh, and i also used my sidewinder to play racing games..... worked AMAZINGLY well
.
stick forward was gas.... back was brake...... left and right was.... left and right lol
.
it actually gave me an advantage over people with steering wheels and pedals (i now have a logitechh G27, and i love it)
i could go from full gas, full right..... to full brake, full left..... quicker than you can with a wheel and pedal board
@@kainhall , do lots of games still support the ffb effect? I think I got rid of the side winder because games didn't support it at the time.
Easily among the best games I've ever played. Remember getting a full version of it with my Voodoo Rush video card. Still have the disks. The early accelerated versions were very buggy, I think it worked on Direct 3D, not Glide. When the Nitro Pack came out everything got fixed and well. I played this game to death.
I also played this on my Rush back in 98 :)
Loved this game
I was like 12 when I played this game. Absolutely masterpiece. I played it through several times.
I remember when I was ten years old. I had this demo. I use to endlessly use the embankments on that one bridge to make the car fly. Back in the day ; when satisfaction was easily attainable.
I had Jane's USNF with my joystick. Now that was so much fun. Landing on the carriers was so gratifying. Cheap thrills were the best thrills.
I used to do the same thing with the demo. I bet I played the demo for 2 years before I got the full game.
Still better physics than all NFS games after 2006 until today!
Still got the Score on CD and listen to it while driving :-)
It is a score to drive with, indeed.
My dad saw this game at a videogame store back in the early 2000s and said to me "this one looks good, let's buy this one". And for whatever reason I remember I said "nah, idk, it doesn't look that good". I regret not buying it back then cause I would have loved it. I bet my old computer would have been able to run it with no problems (as opposed to the whole ordeal that it is to get this working on Windows 10 nowadays...).
You should’ve bought it.
That’s awesome this was the first PC I ever played from a demo disk. Love to play it again.
Same mate!
Best game. Needs a reeboot
100/100 indeed
Agreed. Like an HD version of the old game
Are there ANY games that are rpg car games? Any?! They need some!
Autoduel in the 80s, then interstate 76 in the 90s then NOTHING!
I'm tempted to create my own. I won't have any competition!
Had so much style
@@TheRainHarvester How in the hell do you not mention "Driver" in a list of RPG car games? That's just.... also theres twisted metal if you like the guns on cars thing and rouge trip vacation 2012 which is my personal favorite.
God damn I miss this game!
Runs on my Win10 64Bit played it yesterday had it back in 1997 but never got far so i tried it again and damn its hard
This game was released closer to 1976 than it was to today. -_-
Holy shit.
It's crazy: imagine if today they released a game taking place in...2001 😖
The ai in this game was crazy.
Remember the part where you battled
The cars they are smart.
Remember hiding from them behind
A shed and saw all off them lined
Up looking for me.😂
Was my first game on CD... best of all time!
The True Interstate '76 staring Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey directed and written by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez!!!
Right! But it’s gotta be a show cuz there needs to be a bunch
The thing is, 20th Century Fox acquired the movie rights in '98 but nothing came out of it.
@@Dr.W.Krueger That sounds pretty typical. It could've been an incredible series.
this definetly is one of my fav. alltime games. i loved playing online and using custom paints on the cars, i remember using the overhead view and doing circles around enemies with fire dropper equiped from behind my car, the other dude's tires would melt and then i'd bust a cap in their ass with the handgun. GOOD TIMES!
Loved the paint jobs. My friend dressed up as darth maul one year for halloween. We had a picture of him in the costume. Figured out how to put the pic on a van in the game but labeled it "the phantom dumbass". He wasnt pleased lol.
I downloaded the 21 MB demo of this game in 1997. It took all night lol
Oh man this takes me back man i used to have so much fun with this in the 90's
Dear God, I know GTA is great, but the story and characters in this game were fantastic.
Oh man i loved this game, the music and the voice acting. Need a frikkin remake asap
Got my hands on this gem around 2000/2001 and it was still great. Brilliant soundtrack, the cinematics and gameplay were very good. I would pay for a remake or movie based on the story.
Really liked this game. Revisiting it makes me think the voices/audio were the star.
Hours of lost childhood with this beauty ...
i played this game so much. lovely to see how far graphics have come haha
This game came bundled with the graphics card on my first self bought PC. I started playing after I set the thing up and ended up pulling an all-nighter. I knew then that gaming would end me, lol!
Back then, I wondered if we'll ever see gameplay that looks as good as the cinematics in this game. Now, the cinematics would count as "potato mode" at best.
Best I ever did with this game was driving up alongside an enemy & shooting the driver with my handgun. Salvaged the whole car intact!
Masterpiece blueprint of gta
this is one of the games that i have most enjoid ofall time. the first car wars sort of a a game that i played and fully enjoyed, later came '82, bandits:phenix rising, vigilante 8, and so on. they are scarce in this genre.
Remember trying to get this to run on my old AST P133!! Couldn't quite hack it, and sooo badly wanted a 'Graphics Card'! Remember lusting after the Quake 2 graphics in PC Gamer (with 3Dfx card etc) for years!!
oh god 🤣for anyone new into the game, you don't need to aim at cars manually like that... you press the T or Y key for locking target on them (and HP bar) and then you press F2 or F4 keys to lock camera on enemies... press 1-4 to fire individual weapons
Man, I've been trying to figure out what game this was for years! I used to play it at a friend's house and just remembered you can build the cars up and shoot each other.
This and vigilante 8 need to all be remade, they were so awesome
This game changed my life
I wouldn't go that far for me ... but it made me a 'Cuda and Mopar fanboy.
I loved this game and bought it when it came out. It was like a Superfly car wars game.
I'd pay big time for a remake of this gem. Best game ever created
When i was kid i thaught that 76 is a year of development of this game, and this blow my mind.
The first 10 seconds gave me chills. How did they know?
This game needs an update. This ran sweet on my 3dfx Voodoo back in the day. I even got the sequel!
God, I wish a modern game like this one. :D
I used to LOVE this game. I'd play it in a kind of deathmatch bot mode and just run open world random combat. SO much fun. Someone needs to bring this thing back with modern graphics tech and VR.
I had version with no cutscenes, no tutorial, no music, no missions and I still loved it.
Have been looking for this game for years
The music in this was one of the best of all time!
Interstate '76 was fuckin' rad, back in the day.
The gameplay and atmosphere of this game was so so good
Greetings from "WT_Lexi" of "Wolfteam" to my fellow Interstate 76 Friends.
Holly shit I was about 13 at the time had a steering wheel. 😂 I used to eject the game in play and pop in my music cd and go for a cruise. Did anyone else know that hack or did I figure that out alone? Most games you could eject in play and put a music cd in.👊🏻🙈👍🏻
The text at the beginning predicts America in its current state of disarray.
Man this brings back happier times.
Remember the car battling mode.
Don't know what type of ai are in
Those cars but they're smart and
Deadly.
Like how if you hide they'll start
Commiting suicide ramming themselves in a mountain or
Falling to their death.😂
Other times they'll look for you.
Hid behind a shed and all of em
Were lined up looking for me.
And my brother and I love this game. What game nowadays will go out of the way to make a brand new disco soundtrack
How did you those graphics to look that good? How do you get the external view looking down on the car......thx
Such a good game. Way ahead of it’s time. May have “solved” it 20 times back then
I remember this game being hard as hell
The secret was turning off your engines and coasting. (To avoid the heat detection of the missiles and turrets.) You could also 1 shot the other drivers from your hand gun.
When I heard the sound of Jade being killed, I thought it was a rooster crowing! ;-)
The sequel didn't follow the first game's #1 rule:
"Never get out of the car."
Such a shame a great game like this never got remade...
was playing 1997 on
S3 ViRGE DX 2MB RAM PCI
Best sountrack ever. And how about a poem?
in your version of the game, do the music tracks Loop on the missions? do you use GOG or Steam version? any tips?
the music in original game was supposed to loop... tracks were not supposed to change in missions... each mission had its own specific music track that simply looped
I have been using DXWND and the 24 FPS fan patch 👍now only the music is left to fix
Wow!! I loved this game in those days! Where can I download it?!
Great upload! Not a lot of people know about this game
I didn't know about this game until I connected the dots from an Easter egg within Black Ops 4 battle royale. Do you think it is a random Easter egg or an indication that we will get a new title?!
@@ratskraad5890 Could you explain what was the dots you connected or the Easter egg?
@@wesleykraft4453 I have a video on my channel explains everything. It's just a small insertion from the theme song for I 76 in the popular battle Royale for black ops 4.
I think my computer at the time was just on the verge of being fast enough for this game. Sometimes it would run, but most times it would error out.
This game made me dream about games like GTA 5 when i was a kid.
Here started vigilante 8.
How'd you get the game to look this good?
2024, is it possible to play this game today ?
Моя первая игра на 133... это был шедевр
how did you managed to run this on Windows 10? I have trouble installing it on Windows server 2008
The I76 demo was my youth, more or less🙌⭐️🛞
Ahh i used to love this game.
holy shit !!! how did you do that ??? i just retrieve the original CD's of the game this morning ... i want to play this game agaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain :D
Farout forgot about this game . Absolute nostalgia trip
Wait - Windows 10?? Does it operate in Windows 10?? I haven’t gotten it to operate since Windows 98!
Probably through dosbox or sumfink.
This game was great. Like Wing Commander with cool funky 70s car action. If it wasn't a game and looked realistic it might have also been a Tarantino movie of the 90s. I'd love to play it again but I have read that there would be serious problems with the version you could buy at GOG.
JUE GA ZO! como extraño esa epoca... era todo tan fácil por entonces....
Interstate 76 has some pretty good graphics for 1976! Impressive!
1997*
@@channe3049I was joking XD
My god. The memories.
I played the shit out of this when I was a teen. Still would.
I never got the point of the game. At the time it was a case of adding guns and oil slicks to the car, driving around a wasteland and randomly destroying cars.
Dude, I would LOVE to have an Interstate '76 remake, as long as is doesn't have the "live service/monetisation" BS that comes with most modern video games these days.
I just had a serious childhood rush
Great video, I dug this game out my attic but will not play on my windows 10 pc how do I get this to install and run?
Buy it from gog.com
functio1 thank you 😊
Gog is not enough, but there is a workaround:
www.reddit.com/user/Xetrem190/comments/d5b8ho/complete_guide_on_getting_interstate_76/?
Hey Dave, I Bought, Played & Still Have This Game From Back In The Day (1997) & I Looked At The Guide To Running It On WinX & Depending On Your Circumstance, It Would Almost Be Easier To Just Build An Old Windows 95 Machine If You're A Computer Tech Or Have A Friend Who Is. I Also Think There Was An Easier Workaround To Running It On XP. If I Remember Right, You Could Copy The CD To The Hard Drive & Install It From There. If You Like Cars & Carnage, Try Original Carmageddon. It Will "Fly" Under DosBox In XP (32-Bit) But Be Warned, It Will Take Some Trial & Error . . . Good Luck!
gog.com its good old games dot com
cost like 8$
Hi all! anyone remember a software to customize the cars outside the game?
Nostalgia
Nostalgic.
My childhood memories, when I was 7 years old
Used to love playing this
Hope Activision, Beenox, Infinity Ward, demonware, Treyarch, Raven and Shanghai Studio should remake and revive this game for PlayStations, Xboxs, Nintendos and PCs for enhanced graphics with some vehicle destruction to be like Call of Duty’s car combat.
