  • In this video, Erkki Pöytäniemi explains how mushroom cultivation works in practice. Forest cultivation of shiitake mushrooms makes efficient use of forestry by-products such as small-diameter low value trees from thinning which are normally used as bioenergy or pulp trees. These tree logs can also be used as a cultivation substrate for shiitake mushrooms (and also other mushroom species such as chaga, reishi (also known as lingzhi) and oyster mushrooms) and in this case the added value per tree log can be markedly higher. Another advantage is that forests which are normally only used for wood production, now also produce edible mushrooms. In this way, forest farming can be an ecologically friendly way of food production as it increases land use efficiency.
