  • If the plastic part in this video seizes in the top of the gearbox, getting it out is a nightmare.
If yours isn’t seized, and it will come out, do some preventative maintenance to save you having the problem that I did.
Apologies for the limited video footage.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Thanks for this. When doing this I actually found it was the top pivot that was sticking. Shifting is perfect again after horizontally sliding the top spring connector almost all the way off the top cylinder and ptfe blasting the rod. might help someone else who would have otherwise replaced the part (which we know is hard as there is about 4 'matching' parts for every reg, most of which are a wrong fit).

Thanks for the heads up on this mine is a 1.6 tdi Fabia 86000 miles an is a bit stiff so I’ll be keepin an eye it. 😉👌🏼

If it is stiff, it is likely to seize pretty soon. The worst part of the job is removing the seized plastic bush. If yours will come out now, it is worth considering swapping it before it seizes.

Hi mate, just watched all of this with hope of finding an issue and you saved me hassle with the correct part at the end!
Going through the exact same problem on an 09 skoda fabia 1.9, im just wondering did you get the part online or did you have to call VW? Thanks

Glad to hear it helped. I got the part from VW. It has been updated, so is better than the one that comes out. Can’t remember the exact price, but it wasn’t expensive. The toughest bit was getting the parts guy to understand what bit I wanted. He started to order the wrong part, but let me look at the parts diagram to set him straight.

if you can find the sticker in your service book or by the spare tyre, it will show several 'PR' codes. sometimes part websites explicitly state which of these codes the part is designed for. that's how you get an accurate match, not with the reg. If a corresponding code is not on your sticker, a vw dealer can print you a full list of your PR codes from your VIN.

Im currently changing one and got the exact same replacement with white tab, but the old one, the offset of where the tab is is about half an inch to the side. The new one with the white tab does not reach the gear selector lever on the box?

Hi - I got a genuine part from a VW dealership. Sorry, I don’t have the part number as I did the video a long time ago.
The VW dealer did try to order me the wrong part, so make sure you see the part diagram to make sure.
I think, from memory, that it cost me around £24.

@@RayRay-vt7hc yes, I ended up taking it out without problems. Just keep hold of it because it springs away a little when released. I ended up holding it in a vivid and using a punch and hammer to get it out. The edge of the plastic separated so I used a drill bit and turned it by hand to get the remaining plastic out.

Is this for the Fabia III (mk3) 1.4TDI? Mine has just gone, had to limp home with only 2nd and 4th wanting to go in.
Cables look OK but the selector arm looks sketchy/wobbly and a lot of corrosion on the metal part where the nut secures it on.
Was driving along in town in 3rd and the gear lever popped out, back into neutral. I noticed it in the corner of my eye and went to pop it back in 3rd but it wouldn't go but 4th went in.
will need to have a better look when it's not dark.

      Hi - yes it is.
It is a shocking design. A bit of a nightmare job but very doable.
      Good luck.
