I was an engineer on a ship in 1976 which was on a Japan Line charter and went into Port Hedland 3 times during my time on the ship. It has changed a lot since then and grown quite a lot larger. Thanks for the memory.

I lived there from 1976 to 1984, great time was had, made life time friends and made heaps of money, what should now be a city not totally dependent on Iron Ore, is still a small town totally dependent on Iron Ore, thanks to no foresight from BHP and the W.A. Governments, FIFO destroyed any chance of Pt Hedland ever being anything other than a small town.

Had the Labour govt. been able to borrow money overseas the mining industry would have been Australian owned. i could be excused for believing those of another influence wanted it owned by overseas interests. They won. Same as the flight recorder and other things Australians can be credited for. The people I was sorry for were the Aboriginals. What goes out of that port really belonged to them. I was walking along one day and thought I saw a movement among some small trees. Then I saw some Aboriginal children sitting in the grass. Those children had nothing while in the distance an overseas company was hauling their heritage away in billions. We will never learn while we have pissheads for politicians. I tell any young people with brains to get out of this country fast because politicians consider them dangerous.

You failed to mention that not one of those vessels is manned by AUSTRALIAN CREW MEMBERS .
