Setup 301 Redirects (URL Forwarding) Using CF DNS & Page Rules:
Setting up a 301 redirect at CloudFlare isn’t that self-explanatory…
And since nobody likes reading documentation I figured that a true hero needed to step up and make this easy on the rest of the world.
So here I am, the hero of the internet, come to make your life easier once again - with an article, video & SOP for you to save and use later.
1. Add Domain to CloudFlare
2. Update NameServers
3. Update CloudFlare DNS
Record #1:
- Type: A
- Name: @
- IPv4 Address: 192.0.2.1
Record #2
- Type: CNAME
- Name: www
- Target: @
4. Setup Page Rules for URL Forwarding
- Enter the URL pattern you want 301ing
- Click the dropdown and choose ‘URL Forwarding’
- Select your ‘Status Code’ from the drop down (probably 301)
- Enter the destination
- Click ‘Save and Deploy Page Rule’
You should be able to go to your forwarded domain, and be taken to the destination.
If it doesn’t work, make sure:
- You’ve given enough time for the nameservers to propagate (see step 2)
- Clear the CloudFlare cache (if you transferred your domain from another Cloudflare account)
- Clear your browser cache, or try in ‘incognito mode’ (press shift + command + n on most browsers (MAC) to open an incognito window)

Youuu sonoofaab$%! you DID IT! thanks dude, really, I was struggling cause CNAME was not accepting the url with "/" so I did it with CF and followed your tutorial and worked!
So this is for all the people whi is in the comment section looking for someone saying "is not working" find the full article and follow the steps and re check cause it took me 2 times to make it work.
Thanks.
hell ya!
Bro your sense of humor is amazing, thanks for making it fun
Thanks dude! I cant wait to get these damn websites launched so i can go back to making content :)
Thank you for making this video Devin! This video allowed me to quickly fill in the pieces I was missing to forward my URL.
worked like a charm
other videos on UA-cam didn't mention to setting DNS records beside the page rule
Thanks man
Loved your chill style! Great video, thanks
thanks! if you got any other burning Qs about internet stuff, drop em in im taking requests!
thank you very much! the redirect rules wasnt enough but your video was what i needed 🔥
SO HELPFUL. Thank you! I completely forgot about updating my nameservers first too.
ya... i should prolly do a video on that too - thanks for the feedback
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
thank you! that was fast and helpful, I appreciate your work
omg!! Thankyou! This is what I have been looking for.. you saved me a lot of stress!
Glad to hear it!
Wow, this was just what I needed. I was missing a couple of small details reading through the CF docs.
if you got any other burning Qs about internet stuff, drop em in im taking requests!
thanks man! worked like a charm!
Great video and explanation. Explained it so that even a noob like myself fixed it after hours searching for answers, thanks
now THAT is what i like to hear!
You're amazing, thanks.
Thanks Devin, it was a great explanation for setting up the 301 redirect. Helped me a lot.
You're welcome!
You sir are an interesting fella, I never thought the video that would help me with cloudflare redirects would also be the one mentioning standing and pooping. Thanks
😂 that is exactly the kind of thing my old roommate @oldmansaxon used to say to me
devin - thank you so much for this awesome video (yep, I was stuck too). This was immensely helpful., Thanks again!
you got i! taking requests on other videos LMK what else you need!
Thanks bro! Saved tons of my time.
Glad to hear it!
Thank you very much!!!
Simple and easy. Thanks man :)
yw!
It's working! Many thanks.
Welcome 👍
Thank you man. Super helpful. I just wanted to forward a specific domain on my website to a product page on Gumroad. Didn't think I'd be listening to someone talk about how to poop standing up. It had me howling 😂For that reason alone. I'm going to subscribe.
P.s I'm your luckily 1,000th subscriber.
Thanks, Devin it works!
oh yeah!
it just works, thank you!!
the best 3 words ever spoken
Thanks Devin, really simple explanation, much appreciated, I knew it could be done, just did not know how! We moved our Website Builder/CMS and could not match URLs which was restriction on the new provider hence had to do a number of redirects :)
How many redirects did / do you need to setup?
@@devinschumacher Just two from live marketing campaigns, I noticed the Cloudflare is restricted to 3 on the free plan, thanks again 👍
@@bharatblad i think you can get around that with page rules and use 10.
@@bharatblad i could make a tool to allow you to do unlimited
wow that was hard but it worked. thanks for this video!
Glad it helped!
Thanks, this was supper helpful
Cho welcome man!
This helped me. Thanks
Glad to hear it!
thank you !!!
Thank you
Thanks!
Thank you bro!!!!!
great video! Does cloudflare automatically add the A record @ (different IP address from the SOP) and the CNAME www now? I already had those two in my DNS and Cloudflare won't let me add more.
nvrmind, i figured it out -- was an old A record from my previous host. Thanks again for this video!
did you buy your domain somewhere else and point it to cloudflare? it will usually inherit your previous DNS records to avoid causing you interruption.
@@devinschumacher yes I did and I did en up needing to delete the old DNS records. I got everything working and your video definitely helped. thank you!
@@Ariele.Foster yes they will migrate over DNS record on your behalf as convenience. i wrote a script to delete them all bc it can be a pain when theres alot
@@devinschumacher that's awesome -- you are awesome.
Love the color scheme, Miami retro Neon! Man I really needed this explanation, I've been struggling with my cloudflare DNS setup for a while now. How do you feel about cloudflare as a provider in comparison to others?
Cloudflare is best. By Far…ley
Thanks it’s worked
🍻
Thank you!
🍻
Thank Devin, let me ask if there is any difference between 301 redirects on Cloudfare and Cpanel. Thank you
as far as the search engines are concerned (which is what i assume you are asking), as long as your page is 1. redirecting to the new URL destination & 2. the original "request" sends a response code of "301" --- no, there is no difference.
do whichever you feel more comfortable with.
are there any performance or cost differences? i don't know that'd be something to test. but probably not worth the effort unless your doing a super huge amount of 301s.
this saved my life, thanks a lot, hey I just want to know how can i keep my domain name, when the redirect comes it changes the name but I want to keep my original url, is that possible with rules?
can you give me an example please? that explanation was a little unclear
Works great but what if you want the https and http to redirect? Or do you just set the SSL to strict and wait until that's propagated?
yes just force https
I changed permalink structure from default: ?p=123 to Post name: sample-post/
Site is pretty new but was indexed before this change.
What do I need to do, to completely index the site with brand new permalink structure?
(It completely lost it's visibility, though the site does exist on google and are active.)
if its new it will take longer. more links = re-indexed and ranked faster. i assume you 301d each URL from the old one to the new one, yes?
i would just focus on doing seo like normal, improve interlinking on your site for faster re-crawls, & submit your updated XML sitemap to google search console with the new URL structures.
and did i say build more backlinks? always be building more backlinks.
Thanks @devin
Amazing! How can there be only one resource on the whole Web explain how this is done?!
that is exactly why i made it!
You're the man.
no YOU'RE the man 👊
Valuable!
thanks
No problem
How do i create a subdomain to do this?
set the subdomain in the page rule area!
what about how to mask instead of forward?
why would you wanna do that
i got stuck, thank you
and now you are ... unstuck, yes?
Do you turn off automatic HTTPS redirects before you do this ?
no. i want that on. HTTP --> HTTPS --> 301
what did you use to build the kick ass set up checklist? Looks like Notion on steroids!

How to redirect based on the visitors Geo Location ?
that is a totally different can of beans my friend. but.. hahaha i think i know what youre trying to do already ive thought about this alot.
i think i remember seeing something about this in Cloudflare settings recently actually its a paid upgrade if i remember right.
also could be done at the NGINX level
Is it possible to exclude some URLs from Forwarding URL in Page Rules? How would like to access to the WordPress backend of my old website and exclude /wp-admin from forwarding. Thanks 🙂
Yes you can setup excludes. But why would yo use forwarding your whole domain and using wordpress at the same time?
@@devinschumacher In case of an ecommerce you might need to access to old orders. I did not find a clear way do to that 😞
@@francescozaccagnini3063 if youre hosting the website for wordpress anyways you could just do the redirects via wordpress.
or if you want to use CF -- are you using PAGE RULES or REDIRECT RULES?
Can i redirect a domain with cloudflare and i dont have hosting
I mean to say can i redirect using page rule without hosting ?
yes
Why did you choose page rules over the Redirect Rules?
No particular reason that I remember! Whatever gets the job done
How do I delete a rules page?
click it and hit delete rule i think bottom right?
😂😂 You are forgetting everything like me 😂
When you know TOO MUCH … your brain has to toss a few things out from time to time 😂
Gracias muy útil
Por supuesto!
谢谢Thanks♪(・ω・)ノ帮我大忙了😘

Greate video !!! Ths a lot!!!, how do you redirect a subdomain www.dev.sample.com of a domain www.sample.com to another domain --> www.anotherdomain.com ?
Same way! Just put that in the URI/URL field. Or if you want to redirect ALL subdomains (sometimes websites have a lot) you can use a wildcard character. For cloudflare I think it’s an asterisk ( * ).
It would look something like:
*example.com/*
Hello Davin, I like your video. But your voice is too low, i can not hear you clearly unless turn up to 100%
yeah i think that was the video i messed up on the recording. sorry :(
