  • Possibly the most widely anticipated camera in recent times is the Canon EOS R7 for wildlife photography. Sabine managed to get her hands on a pre-release model for a hands-on test in The Chobe and give her first impressions (and lots of images) of this amazing new mirrorless camera.
    In this video, she will run through the key features and share her first impressions of the build quality and the images it produced as well as the confirmed specifications. Canon South Africa gave us access to this camera to test in the field before the official launch date and we believe we are the first people to try it on safari!
    The Canon Eos R7 features plenty from the bigger R3, R5 and R6 but is certainly more affordable for wildlife photography enthusiasts.

      I've read that Canon won't be making a battery grip for this camera. Have any of you guys heard about that? If true it's going to be a deal breaker for many people. edit*** Canon USA confirmed to me in a comment under their video they have no plans to make a grip for this camera. What an epic fail.

      Looks like almost a dozen reviews got the pre release models. They all would have had an NDA telling them they can't release until a certain time. Hence why they pretty much all released within a few minutes of each other. If anyone releases early, say goodbye to getting sent cameras in the future.

    I guess Canon's intent is clear for having you guys have the first look into these new cameras instead of the likes of McKinnon, Gerald and the Northrups.
    Seems to be overall well-rounded offerings from Canon this time around. Hope they will succeed and use that to strengthen the RF lens lineup.

      @@dtibor5903 You may be right, but looking at the videos done by DPReview and a few others, the laser focus on wildlife and sports is obvious. McKinnon has been radio silent despite being a Canon ambassador and the cameras being final production units. Canon is being weirdly selective about who gets first dip this time around and to me it shows how hard they are pushing this agenda.

    Wow, you guys must be really well connected and respected. You're the first video I have seen with the actual camera. I have an R6 and 7D MII. I am hoping this will replace the latter. Is there an adapter for EF lenses? Looking forward to mounting the 300 2.8 L IS and 100-400 L MII but they are both EF. Also interested in build quality. The 7D MII is tough. I'm hoping I can take the R7 out on hikes and to shoot sports and not worry about a little bit of very light rain.

    • @Skeyechi

      Yes, there is an adapter for EF lenses. I've been using it on the R5 and R3 and it works like a charm. Don't hesitate to keep some of your old EF glass - the adapter is worth its money and produces images as if you'd be shooting on a camera that fits EF lenses.

    Hey Sabine, great review on the R7. I watched it along with others before I went and bought the camera. I paired it up with the RF 100-500mm and like the combination for its lightness and easy transition from other Canon cameras. The quickness of eye focus is amazing as is the video. At 2K CDN dollars it will be a great addition to the R6 and 5D mkiv on the trip to Botswana. My only disappointment that was brought up by many reviews was the noise level. Of the bear,bison and air show shots I have taken, the noise was the biggest complaint- perhaps the only. My 7D mkii never had the issue to this level and think a noise removal software program would be advised to have in post. The R6 with RF 100-500 was not nearly as and think there is still some shuffling to be done to fine tune the arrangement. Thanks again for your and the Pangolin team for putting out some great videos. They are most helpful and inspirational. Cheers!

    Congratulations to be the first on a short review of this exciting camera !!
    Yes, I am eager to get this camera and shoot wildlife with the RF 100-500. I suppose this is an ideal combination shooting with enough light. Under lower light you may continue with the R6 and a 70-200 f2.8.

  • @BenoitLamarche
    @BenoitLamarche 2 роки тому +15

    It was a genuinely nice review, and it has me second guessing my next planned upgrade (R6). However, I would like these cameras to be tested on lenses most of us can afford. The RF 100-500mm has me drooling, but it is out of reach for many of us.

      Take out a loan! People take out a loan to get a house, a car, and heck, they often spend $100 on dinner which is over in like a half hour. If you love photography, go out and borrow to get what you want. You just have to decide how much you want your dream lens!
      Anyway, now that I got that out of the way, the R6 is fantastic. I don’t think you will be disappointed at all. I don’t really miss the crop sensors much, since I got used to full frame several years ago. We just have to see if the R7 is on par with noise levels. If it is, then it’s definitely the better option if you shoot birds mostly. I also debated upgrading from my 100-400 to the 100-500L. I just don’t think that lens is worth the upgrade. It’s too costly for what you get. You are better off with an older 500mm f4 lens to adapt and go. Good luck to you!

      Glass is way more important than body. If you can't afford good glass then you certainly shouldn't be spending so much on a Canon R6 or R7. /humble bow

      @gary_michael_flanagan_wildlife 2 роки тому +2

      @@grahamfloyd3451 oh yes, 100 percent. You don’t know how many people spend 3500 bucks on an R5 and then stick a crappy tamron zoom on it. These days, the camera bodies have made a much bigger leap from the DSLR so this has shifted a little towards the importance of a better body though. But yes, glass is so important!

    • @fernandoish9194
      @fernandoish9194 2 роки тому +3

      @@grahamfloyd3451 That's true. But in wildlife photography the animal eye tracking is a game changer. The amount of pictures you miss only because of the AF is huge, and the 15 FPS (or even 30) really make a difference for action images or flights. Usually for wildlife you can only save a few shots from each session, and very rarely you get "that one" shot where something interesting is going on with a perfect focus. But with the eye tracking sistem of the new R5 and R6 the number of keepers is way higher and the chance of getting the money shot increases a lot. And now you have that very same thing but in a 1500€ camera, and a 1.6x sensor and with IBIS too. Combined with the 100-500 RF you are now (easily) handholding a 800mm lens with almost perfect sharpness and a camera with top image quality. That's crazy. My best lens is the old 400mm F5.6 and I was saving for a better one, but as soon as I find out how the R7 really does at high ISO I'm definitely going for it.

    I am considering upgrading my Fuji XT30 camera to a Sony A7IV, but this is quite tempting considering the price and weight. Looking forward to the full review. It's a shame the Canon RF 100-500 is so expensive! I wish there was something like the Sony 200-600 which is almost half the price!

    Looks quite nice but I am a bit disappointed that the option to add a battery grip is not possible with the R7. I find the grip makes the camera much more ergonomic and the addition of rear controls for vertical shooting is helpful; a battery grip also balances the camera better when hand holding long telephoto lenses. And of course having the extra battery is a plus when you are out all day shooting and using all the extra things like IS and Servo focus which add to the battery load.

    • @djrautenbach2407

      The battery actually lasts the whole day, and if you only take photos of what you want, over 600 photos per outing is plenty.
      Lets hope that grip comes out soon….

I would like to improve my (limited) skills for wildlife photography, and I wonder if the best choice to buy a camera Body with Animal eye detection camera body would be R6 or R7 . Better Iso the first one, better reach (I believe) the second . Any suggestion from you side ? Thanks !

    I haven't gotten a look at the bottom of the R7 anywhere... Does it appear to be able to be fitted with a battery grip? I use them on my DSLRs for long shooting sessions and so that I "only" need to carry six spares (with six other batteries in three cameras). If the R7 is power hungry like most mirrorless, I may need 2X or 3X as many batteries and spend more down time changing them out than I like! At least with a grip, batteries would only need to be swapped half as often.

      A grip is a bad idea for long birding sessions hand held. The grip + 2nd battery is another 430gm you have to hold. Better to have spare batteries in your pocket.

    When shall we have a R7 setup for wildlife photography?

  • @stubones

    This camera and a 100-500 WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT for the sports I shoot. The 7Dii and 100-400ii have been great but the AF is limiting me now due to the speed I have to work at. The hit rate is too low and I have to delete more images than I keep. edit** (unconfirmed) if true that Canon won't be making a vertical grip for the R7, its going to be a complete deal breaker for many people, including me. I'm not doing the funky chicken to shoot vertically.. no way Jose'

      Stubones, I have been using the EOS system for nearly 30 years, starting with the film cameras. And even before that, I was taught to avoid the chicken wing for verticals by turning the camera clockwise and actuating the shutter with my right thumb. OR using BBF, I easily Back Button focus with my thumb and shutter with index finger. Very comfortable and with both elbows tucked-in I'm a stable as I ever was (age adjusted) hand-held, even with a long lens. With a vertical grip, I still use this method. Try it, you might like it and save the weight of the VG, when you can. With today's EOS cameras, there's nothing needed to be done with the left hand but hold the camera, while shooting, anyway.
      I shudder every time I see a photographer--even famous pros with a flying elbow.

    I like your vdo regarding Canon EOS R7,
    It's simply great & you had explained in a very easy language.
    One question I want to ask you i.e. whether Canon R7 can be use in low light & in uncontrolled light conditions.
    Awaiting for your reply.

    Excellent review by someone who shoots every day, and guides and helps regular enthusiast photographers regularly. Have you tried the EF lenses on this camera? I particularly like the EF 70-300 II on my APS-C SLR. It is light, relatively small, has IS and a digestible price tag. Do you see your clients using this lens? Do they get good results?
    Other than the extra "reach" is this a better option than the "R" as a person's first "R family" camera?

      Hi Craig, Im using a 70-300 ef lens and it really doesnt beat the rf lenses. The glass is quite old technology and something like the 100-400 L mk2 is way better, its just very heavy. the 100-500 rf is the one, but its a bit expensive for me.
      An everyday lens that I have come to love is the 18-135 ef, very nice and quite sharp even in low/ish light..
