Brother, as a karateka and (more than anything else) seasoned Kungfu practitioner, I can only tell you that if this was indeed your very first time learning not just Kungfu but probably the hardest style in all Kungfu (Zui Quan is notoriously the hardest), you have done EXCEPTIONALLY well.
Also, you have quickly grasped a very key concept that many seem to ignore:
by "being drunk" you let go of the fear and anxiety (like when you walked on the mat). This is something that a Drunken Fist fighter can really call an advantage. Karate people, Sanda people, Kickboxing people, Muay Thai, MMA, Wrestling... what do they all have in common before a fight? They tense up. They become rigid and stiff, more preoccupied with looking as big and deadly as possible rather than dominating their own space and using Agility as an actual advantage.
Zui Quan enhances Agility and mobility (not only deception) in a way that makes you more comfortable and dominant, even when faced with otherwise paralyzing fear and anxiety.
I strongly suggest you don't let go of the Drunken Fist style, but treasure its benefits and incorporate it into your own thinking and tactics.
And if I can give you a suggestion (if you haven't done so already), you might want to spend some time training in Baguazhang as well. As you know it's the art Chojun Miyagi studied in China prior to founding Goju Ryu. It's one of the three main Internal styles (along with Taichi and Xing Yi Quan), I think it would benefit you a lot on your journey, "completing" Drunken Fist, in a sense.
Best of luck, and well done!

with a wushu-background I just thought the very same. But I actually liked it very much. I don't have fun anymore watching wushu-clips on YT. Feels, as if everything is so inside the box, nothing suprising happens, all the different forms a performed in such a ununique similar style. But seeing Jesse with his Karate-tensed movements I really enjoyed it.

As someone who practices kung fu and wushu, I will say that you did very well, especially for only a week of training and a shoulder injury. The only real issues were small details and body movement specific to the Drunken Fist forms but that stuff comes with a long time of experience. You can tell you have a very strong martial arts foundation so that made up for most of it. Great thing about Drunken Fist though is that it’s a very improv friendly and mistake friendly form since you can just act drunk. This also means it’s fun and you can be relaxed while doing the form. Anyways, very enjoyable and great performance.

First of all really respect to Jessie's open mind and courage to learn and compete in different marital arts. Second, what I noticed is that Jessie still has his habit from karate when he's doing the drunken fist form such as the solid kime after each move. That somehow makes the entire form looks like it's from a southern Chinese martial arts style(南拳) because of the history between karate and southern styles. I don't know if drunken fist count as one of the southern styles nor is that the correct way or not, but it's very interesting to notice.

1:30 if anybody is interested in how to perform this move but is still struggling, here's my two cents: always land on your tiptoes and try to keep your back curve (sorry guys, I dont't know if that last sentence is correct, I don't speak english), trying to land on your feet with your body in a flat position will stop you from standing up. Great video as always, Jesse!

Nice Jesse, very impressive for only one week of training in that form! I have karate and kungfu background as well, haven't trained martial arts in years because of depression. Got to say though, your video really inspired me, keep up the good work you're doing and congratulation for your bronze!

    Hey Jesse,
I just got motivated by your video as I injured my shoulder while sparring last week and I still cant lift my arm properly like you... luckily my shoulder wasn't dislocated.. The thing is I was training so hard for my 1st Dan Black in this September and I was so despaired when I was injured.. But as you said, "Injuries are not obstacles.. It's an opportunity"... I'll do it no matter what... You were one of my favourite since i was a beginner... Osu!

Hey Jesse, watching your videos and the behind the scenes of a training session is really cool. I also learned that just like in this video at the high level you will see that people have many injuries that we don't see. Same for Oliver his journey training for his MMA fights. Personally I don't do karate although I love it, but sadly I had my Blue belt for Kempo cancelled because of an injury. Training is still mostly on hold but it is getting better. Very happy for you that you managed to participate and even got a great score.

Wow, this is truly inspiring to me. I haven't practiced martial arts since I was in high school. After watching this video I shall go back to the arts. While this style might look "easy" it has its own techniques and it's quite more complex than it seems. But it will be a great training for someone that hasn't been training nor working out in years plus it looks funny as well.

WoW. Every comment in here spoke my thoughts on how inspiring you are Jesse . Jackie Chan was one of my favorite martial artist growing up in the 80's besides Bruce Lee of course . But Jackie's take on the Martial Arts was and still is inspiring in my life. You my friend did an amazing job in learning those moves and making them your own. At 52 and getting hit with Covid in the lungs and being in the hospital for a week , and at home with an oxygen machine 24hrs a day for 3 months ,
This past January and now 100 percent back working and teaching again , I truly give my recovery first to God's grace on me 2nd to my continued practice of the martial arts as an exercise in my life. I've been following you for roughly 3 years and I've learned so much from your experiences . Much Blessing now and in your future my Dojo Brother. Osss.

I also had that shoulder pain once or twice, it happens when you land/brace with your shoulder as you fall and the impact stretches the muscle/tendons.. very painful, feels like you dislocated it.

    • @Xrayhighs
      @Xrayhighs Рік тому +5

Those falling exercises were advanced techniques, i know them from judo.
Judo takes great time to learn how to be thrown, to avoid such injuries while exercising throws with a judo partner.
Falling from height is considered advanced, falling forward is often more difficult than side or backward.
Placement of arm and shoulder is important, in judo roling or claping on the ground is used to get rid off the energy from falling.
I know Jesse is advanced practitioner of martial arts, but new techniques can always have some quirks that need time to learn.
      Good luck!
